2017 College Football Thread: Hawaiian QB devastated to find out Jesus was "kinda rooting for Georgia" (2 Viewers)

This TN search is ####### amazing comedy on some of my local circles. Lot of Vols fans. Even the most upbeat/diehard among them is completely beaten down and has given up hope

Got what they deserved for how they handled the Schiano thing in the first place.  I personally hope every single coach out there expresses interest and gives them hope, only to dash those hopes, using it as leverage to get a raise.

is this seeming fiasco in Tennessee out of the ordinary? or was this somewhat typical pre-twitter universe?

what i mean is, how long did these searches typically take and how many coaches are typically contacted before someone takes the job?

do we even know?

I’m not sure how well known it would be before social media and 24/7 coverage.  That said, I’m sill pretty sure this isn’t the norm.

We don't know. And - more importantly - we don't know how much of this stuff being reported is true. Multiple people disputed what Clay Travis wrote yesterday about Brohm. So who knows what's really going on? Maybe it is a cluster. Or maybe they are taking their time and doing due diligence.

Heating up today

Sumlin to Oregon

Taggert to FSU

Jimbo to TAMU

Hayden Fox to Tenn

And thats exactly what you want in a HC.

I know he's entertaining, but you have to assume most respectable programs and AD's with openings coming up don't want any part of that.
I think we are just speaking of his twitter shtick. I want Kiffin no where near anything valuable to me.

Kiffen at least understands that his Twitter schtick will resonate with 16-17 year old kids who think he's funny, plus he coaches FAU...what the hell does he have to lose there?  He's actually done a great job with his "Last Chance U" approach there.  I was critical of him early and bet against him early on, but he turned that ball of doodoo fire around.

Oh I know, I'm just sayin...I don't think he's really doing himself any favors assuming he wants to move on from FAU one day.
He turned that sorry program into a huge winner in year 1. People make jokes but he is easily the best candidate at UT. And there's no way he'll get it.

I mean Tennessee is trying to hire the NC State coach. That guy has a worse record at NCSU than Butch did at UT. :lmao:

I was passing through a nearby town this morning and someone has Tennessee flag (orange and white stripes, orange field with white stars and Tennesee's T) flying in their yard. I felt sorry for them.

ETA: similar to this.

Some older Tennessee alums saw the old football movie, Wildcats, thought it was a documentary, and wanted to add Goldie Hawn's name to the list of potential candidates.

Adam Rittenberg   @ESPNRittenberg

39s

Dave Doeren will remain at NC State, according to a source. Doeren spoke with Tennessee officials on Wednesday about their vacancy but will remain in Raleigh, where he is expected to receive a new contract.

Typically most of this stuff gets done behind the scenes through agents and intermediaries, and that results in the job not being "offered" to someone until that person is ready to accept it. That's why you hear a lot of "Coach X was never really offered the job..." from fans who want their egos massaged. Also it's why coaches aren't always lying when they say "I have not been contacted/spoken to anyone about another job" because his agent his interfacing with a booster of the school if not the AD directly.

It's also why schools use search firms. They aren't literally trying to find coaches for the schools but they're handling all that behind the scenes stuff and doing the formal vetting.

That Schiano flame throwing by the UT fan base may cost them a good coach....for like, ever? What wanted coach would want to deal with that ####show?

No schtick the guy Tennessee should be hiring is Mike Houston from James Madison.  That guy has won at every level he's coached at but probably wouldn't satisfy the fans looking to win the press conference.

Is there a legitimate connection between Jimbo and A&M? Why isn't Tennessee going after him at this point if he's looking to make a move?

He's kind of boys with the AD.

The connection is 3 million more in annual salary than FSU is paying him with an 8-10 year contract.

I think Azzinaro is a lock to go with Chip.  Greatwood and Osborne were long time Duck coaches and I think they are good coaches.   They are older and rumor was they really slacked on the recruiting trail towards the end at Oregon.  John Neal will likely join Chip in my opinion, he is defensive back coach.  I also would not be surprised to see Mark Helfrich as offensive coordinator.
Thanks for the response.

Sounds like Helfrich is out.  There is a decent chance Jedd Fisch stays on as OC, but I'll believe that when I see it.  And, sounds like Demetrice Martin is going to be retained as DB coach.

Tennessee should just roll with no coach next season.  They don't need one.  Start a new trend.

Hell make that dog Smokey the coach if you really feel you have to have one

True STory:

I told my hardcore TN Fan buddies they were insane around week 7 or so. Said straight up we were NOT getting a top tier coach or any hot young-gun given the state of the program. Kids transferring like its going out of style... which they were head-in-the-sand about despite me rattling off a list of 15 blue chip transfers in the last several years. Great stadium. Top notch facilities. Huge fan base. Tons of money.  But it is an absolute cluster#### and has been for years now.

As you stated, the massive fan base has now gone from a positive to a negative. The "Tons of money" faucet is going to dry up as Neyland goes from sold-out every game to barely half full.... booster money dries up.... merch purchasing dwindles...etc.

They thought I was nuts and a traitor for saying nobody wants to play for or coach for TN..... Looks like I was more right than I even realized then. They need to forget a head coach, and go after a hot shot coordinator, or try to bring in a Tennessee man like Tee Martin (if he'd even have them at this point) as a stopgap. Thing is... the longer this goes on, and the more whiffs they have, the more toxic the scenario becomes.

UT should give Fulmer a 3 yr deal, bring in Tee Martin as OC/Head Coach in Waiting (worthless title and all), and hope beating 4 cupcakes, Vandy, & UK is enough to get to the Liberty Bowl.

Just put this #### show behind them.
Maybe they could bring back Johnny Majors.  He's only a few years older than Bill Snyder.
