2018-19 NBA Thread: Magic Johnson leaves Lakers in order to pursue other jobs to be completely terrible at (4 Viewers)

this is from some bleacherreport article about the Lakers, talking about why LeBron is so salty. sounds little bit "get off my lawn", but there are some valid points:

But the broader topic is what leadership means today for the modern NBA superstar. In ancient times (like, you know, 15 years ago), leadership meant that NBA stars embraced the challenge of making those around them better. Now, in large part due to the player-movement era that James ushered in when he left Cleveland to team up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami in 2010, superstars have been conditioned to give up on their current circumstances and demand better teammates, a new home or both.

"Now it's all about deferring and putting blame on somebody else," one of the Western Conference executives said. "Instead of being like an old-school guy and saying: 'I've got to do a better job. I've got to make my teammates better.' Great players and great leaders, that's what they do. That's what Kobe [Bryant] would've done. That's what Michael Jordan would've done."

Not to get romantic about the Jordan era, but in those days, the likes of Bill Cartwright and Steve Kerr needed Jordan to elevate them. How well the biggest star on your team did that defined how effective a leader he was. Today, with star players perpetually angling for better teammates and more attractive markets, the narrative has shifted. Suddenly, it's become the job of the supporting players to make the superstars better. And if the superstar struggles, it must be his teammates' fault.

And it's not only LeBron’s teammates who are getting the blame. Just this week, in a subtle backhanded slap at the team's decision-makers, he told reporters, "You have four guys in our top-eight rotation that you have to really rely on, and it's unfair to them to ask for so much when they're in their second or third year."

"These new-school guys always want to put it on somebody else," one of the Western Conference executives said. "It's an immediate-gratification society, and it's always someone else's fault."

seemed interesting cause of various conversations recently. Some were on response to LeBron passing Jordan in their bad loss the other night. Some people are pissed that people didn't appreciate it, but reality of it is for LeBron that it is all egocentric.

Same idea with other things i have heard about young fans today care more about individual players then teams. i think some of that is due to some of the horrible ownership and front offices out there, which isn't wrong.

Pretty solid points in there.

Have NO idea why Pellie ticketholders forced to watch Jah, Solomon & FJax (and their equivalents throughout TankWorld) aren't suing the teams.

Ingram out for the rest of the year officially.  Lakers in full tank mode now.
Sure sounds much worse than a typical 'shut it down' injury.  That blood clot stuff is scary.  Hope Ingram is fine and this is just a better safe than sorry deal.  Guy is super talented and is making real strides.

Wondering if there is a different Kobe Bryant that I don't know about.
Thought the same thing.  The way people write about Kobe's leadership makes movies 'based on true events' seem accurate.

Dudewas an ahole ballhog that sold his teammates out time after time after time.  He also demanded a trade, was involved in an off the court incident, and yet here we are reading about him as a leader all the damn time.  It's crazy.

One of my all time favorites is when he diappeared in game 7 against the C's, gets bailed out by Odom and Metta and gives them zero credit in the presser.  "how did you guys pull that off?"  " I don't know!"

Then gets series MVP even though he gave away two games himself freelancing defensively in crunch time while his man (Rondo) got easy put backs.  Defense was Hardenesque as far as awareness of where his man was.

Sounds like Ball might not come back again this season either. What a disaster this season has been.

Almost a guarantee the Celtics drop what should be an easy game here, and kill the momentum they've been building

i like when the Sixers did this the media would tear into them and the NBA felt the need to have the GM fired.

tempted to find a bet somewhere that Lakers will get the 2nd pick in the draft again though. We all know Silver will take a heavy hand against any potential "tanking"

Bucks have had 1 50 win season in over 30 years until tonight.

So essentially they had 1 50 win season in the Bradley Center. And 1 50 win season at Fiserv Forum (new stadium for those of you that still don't give a #### about the Bucks).  This may be a 1 or 2 year thing. Please join us. /jaded Bucks fan

They provide computer systems for banks.  Probably other stuff too.

wait, i thought Milwaukee was all beer, cheese, and Jeffrey Dahmer. They have businesses there too?

very, very weak. Should Sixers put "Rocky" or something dopey on their uniform?

The Philadelphia 76ers unveiled today its 2018-19 City Edition uniform, presented in partnership with Official Jersey Patch Sponsor StubHub. The 2018-19 City Edition uniform celebrates Philadelphia’s rich history of the challenger’s mentality that inspired the “Rocky” and “Creed” films.

The uniform’s core displays the iconic circle of 13 stars derived from the boxing ring where Rocky Balboa first squared off against Apollo Creed, while the gray sweatsuit-textured base was influenced by both Adonis Creed’s and Rocky’s legendary training scenes throughout the streets of Philadelphia. The crisp blue, red and white waistband trim on the shorts is inspired by Rocky’s championship belt.

yeah, but that makes sense. Trying to link with Creed 2 and all. Hoosiers came out in the 80's right? little late to try and tie in some promo for that. Great, bunch of white kids, one of which shoots free throws underhand, won some games. Hooray!!

stay down, stay down

not saying this in a mean way, but i have never noticed how effeminate Myles Turner looks.

also trying to figure out the meaning of half of Mike Scott's tattoos. really not sure what message he is trying to convey.

Lastly,  baskets make by Thad Young should count for the Sixers.

i think Nate McMillan should win coach of the year. I can't figure out how this Pacers team keeps competing
Excellent defense and more talent than you think. Turner should likely be the DPOY and is shooting 40%+ from beyond the arc. Sabonis has been $ off the bench. Bogy has been excellent. Matthews has been an excellent mid-season addition.

That's like saying all Rudy did was make one tackle...

You're embarassing yourself now
