So with Denver maxing Jokic, Shamsports has them at about $12m over the luxury tax, and that’s assuming they let Barton go. They aren’t paying that, right? Are they still going to try and deal a future to get off chandler or Faried?
My assumption is they are going to try and trade a first with Faried and Arthur and sneak Barton in under the tax. Faried plus a first is a massive overpay for dumping salary, especily considering that Faried is still a rotation level player. If he was on the market this year, he would be getting paid at least the bi annual (roughly 4 million/yr) by somebody.

Great move at locking Jokic in. He deserves it and I'm happy it's a 5 year deal.

I wonder with Leonard if it's more than anxiety. Perhaps a social disability of some kind. Some have speculated he's somewhere on the autism spectrum, but I also wonder if the shooting of his father traumatized him in some way. It's not really cool to speculate about but it would explain a lot.

Anyway, in general I wish him well. I just would have liked to see him handle this situation better. There's no doubt in my mind that Pop has always had Kawhi's best interests at heart.
I would hope majority of Spurs fans would be supportive of Kawhi when he moves on. I get that it sucks, but this situation has a lot of strange stuff behind it that I am not sure we will ever truly know what happened. Hopefully they get good reimbursement for him and all sides can move on

could well be that IS his best foot forward

anxiety is a thing
I have it.  Well aware.

Lots of ways to deal with it is also a thing.

And even further brings up the original question regarding why someone like this WANTS to go to LA.

If that is the case, I certainly feel for him.

And question even further the move to LA.

good move by DEN locking down Jokic....they have a nice core with Jokic Harris and Murray....I feel they would really like to bring Barton back (and need to IMO)....he is some instant offense that they need on occasion....they will be moving on from both Chandler and Faried...
I'd be surprised if Chandler isn't on the opening night roster. He's a decent player and the only guy on the roster who can credibly defend small forwards.

Honestly, I hope they let Barton walk. The Nuggets don't need more offense and he is a ball stopper offensively and one of the worse defenders on the team.

Plumlee  :wall: I'll never understand.

They've spent so much time trying to rid of Faried over the years that I just can't wrap my head around why they doubled up their Plumlee mistake by extending him. $13-14 mil/yr for 20 MPG and 8 shots made outside 8 ft all year

I think Chandler just opted out...so I think he is gonzo

It seems crazy on its face, but maybe he really needs to be close to his family and his old friends to feel secure. And if there is some plan afoot for LeBron to go there with him, maybe the idea is that he won't have to deal with the limelight since he'll be in the shadow of a much bigger star. I know Skip Bayless thinks Kawhi has mentally crumbled under the pressure of being a "face of the franchise" type of player. Who knows, really. As a Spurs fan I just really hate the thought of the Lakers benefiting from this ####show.

somebody tell me sum'n about signing your own RFAs - if they accept an offer from someone else, do you have to specifically match those terms or can you exceed them? here's why i ask - if you can offer your RFAs more than other teams, why would you ever do anything but match what outside teams would offer unless if they got another team to make em a 1 yr offer after which they could be UFAs and the only thing you could do then was match that.
I don't know if you can exceed, but as long as you match the offer, I think that you automatically have the player, so there's really no point to exceed.

If a player is that important to your franchise, you probably want to make sure that there is no bad blood and that you keep him in the fold (see Gordon Hayward).  I think that's the main reason you would want to act first.

yeah, right now i dont really care about the 8th-yr FA contract because i dont think you can win with a 40% player unless he's an unprecedented talent & maybe not even then. that 4-5mil or whatever it is between what hometeam & potential signers can offer RFAs is gonna be pretty big capwise (until they license gambling, anyway) UNLESS the RFA can get someone to offer him less than the max yrs so the match frees him early

I highly highly doubt Leonard can go anywhere in San Antonio and nobody bothers him.
Ya, I ran into Wiggins and Levine when they were rookies at a restaraunt in Dinkytown.  My son (then in middle school) and his friend went up to ask him for a picture.  If those two as rookies aren't safe in Dinkytown, no way Leonard walks around freely in SA without attracting attention.

PSA for everybody...

Dunc'd On has their annual off-season podcast out todoay (part one). For those of you who aren't familiar, the Dunc'd On guys get together with some other industry guys (Kevin Pelton, Dan Feldman) and split up all the teams between Danny, Dan, and Kevin, and Nate runs the off-season as the player agents. They basically pretend like they control all the teams in the NBA and run through fake trades and signings. In general, I love their podcast, but this particular podcast is the highlight of the year.

Yeah, a 6'8 black dude will fit in a lot easier in LA than in SAN.

These guys make my ears bleed.

then i'd think you'd be more sympathetic to someone in your same shoes?

also, he's FROM Los Angeles

 I know Skip Bayless thinks
the only thing Skip Bayless thinks is "how can i say something that will get me clicks/attention". that's it.

i'd be willing to wager the mortgage that he hasn't said anything, publicly, that he honestly believes in many years.

Haha, fair enough. I'm not really tuned in to the sports media game.

I'm not not sympathetic.  I was making an observation.

The question I had (still have) from that observation is if indeed he hates the public light, if he has anxiety about it, if he has a disability around it - whatever it is or might be - seems the bright lights of LA will only make those aspects worse than they are in SA.  He can go out any time any place and be left alone.  That isn't going to be the case in LA or most any other major market I am familiar with.

If he can't handle the pressures of a book signing in a local San Antonio grocery store... what is he going to do with what must be orders of magnitude greater requirements as a Laker star?

In San Antonio he may be the most recognizable celebrity other than Pop. Maybe Parker and Manu, but they are on the decline.  In LA there is a significantly larger population of famous athletes in all sports and a large number of entertainers as well.  In addition to that, if LeBron also goes to LA he instantly tales the spotlight off Kawhi.

He goes from big fish in a small pond to decent sized fish in an ocean.

Then he dates a Kardashian and he's like the 12th most well known celebrity in that entourage.  It's L.A.

In San Antonio we see Spurs around all the time in my part of town.  Nobody bothers them beyond a wave or "hi Kawhi/Tim/David/Manu/Tony/Bruce".  No pictures or autographs.  None of it.

When he becomes a Laker star that all changes.

David Robinson and Tim Duncan eat at the McAllister's Deli on Military/1604 all the time.  Tim and Tony used to eat at the Taipei on Stone Oak every thursday.

Walks in by himself or with whomever, waits in line, sits right next to you.  You eat your meal, he eats his.  If eye contact is made you nod, they nod.  Everyone goes on their way.

Someone in LA tell me how this goes down when Magic or Kobe tries to grab a sandwich or a quick bite at a popular Chinese spot.

They don't go to those places unless they're prepared to deal with the masses. There's places for rich/famous people to go in and around L.A. so they don't have to deal with the riff raff.

I think they sort of pride themselves on not messing with famous people in LA, paparazzi aside.

This is also true, though again it is somewhat location dependent. You're going to get different treatment in Ontario than you will in Bel Air.

Lol at thinking he is choosing where he wants to play so he can eat a ham sandwich in peace.

I mean Jesus

Of course people are stopping them for photos and autographs. You have to be the most naive person on the planet to think otherwise.

Never seen it happen in my 25 years here.

Ate within 4 feet of Robinson at the above location maybe a week ago.  I've had several Spurs as neighbors, we see them all the time around my part of town in the stores, restaurants, movies, kids sports games.

The worst I've seen was Bruce Bowen buying some ice cream and a group of teenagers ran up and yelled "GO SPURS" while he was paying...  I think they startled him for a second.

They are largely able to go out and about as they please, by themselves, like anyone else.  We notice them, but it is pretty cool imo that we make it a point not to hassle them.

eta - of course at the games, at these PR events, at the camps... people are asking for autographs and taking selfies.

Rodman was an exception.  But then again.. Rodman was an exception in every regard.

You can eat a tuna salad and not be bothered in Orlando. They have Mickey ####### Mouse there!

How did Russell Westbrook not win the MVP again this season? He averaged a triple-double again and is only the third time in history that has been done.

Gob here, I'm listening now.

They essentially performed no different than last year - 47 wins vs 48 and a first round exit.  Poking fun at the Melo 'upgrade' usually warrants a good chuckle, but as good as Oladipo has proven to become they still added Paul George.  And were not any better.  Is it a noteworthy achievement?  Sure.  Is it MVP worthy?  Nope.  Especially when weighted against Harden and what his team accomplished, the Superman act put on my LeBron, and Davis carrying his team after the Cousins injury.  Numbers are a nice objective crutch to lean on to stay in the conversation, but subjectively there's nothing Westbrook did to put him in the same level as those 3 this year.
