2018 MLB Regular Season Thread! Current thread batting average: .420 (1 Viewer)

I hit the draft during Red Sox/NBA finals commercials. The analysis they do is pretty solid, the crew they had on was good. They really don't have the announcing picks down like NBA/NFL though. Basically a bunch of people clap when the commish paused after each pick with a look on his face like "OK everyone clap now".
Manfred is a bad public speaker.  His delivery of the picks last night was terrible.

Agreed the MLBN crew is the best part.  Wish more guys showed up for the draft, that would make it better.

He was brutal.  Apparently someone mentioned it to him, because he quit doing the 'say the name, awkward pause waiting for applause, then mention the position and school' routine after the first few guys.  Really awkward.

The ball has got to be juiced. It's crazy compared to the last couple years, pitchers are getting smoked
Agreed.  When Scooter effing Gennett goes yard 4 times in a game you know something is up.  Also seeing guys get called up to the bigs and displaying more power than in the minors.

I'm fine with it being juiced, though.  Chicks dig the long ball.

I went back and forth on starting him today and decided not to.  Literally the only correct SP call I've made all year.
Looks like Josh Tomlim just asked Rich Hill to hold his beer. Unfortunately, there was no condensation on the bottle and Hill got a blister from holding it.

The 5 winning NL teams also happen to be the top 5 in the NL in hitting doubles.  Not a surprise.  They all have strong and diverse offense.

Best sales peak for a baseball player by the way since Jeets left...he was selling better than Curry two weeks ago. Best non-Jeets peak since I don't know...Harper or Trout or Papi didn't get that high...Strasburg maybe?

Remarkable similarity going into the Pirates-Cubs game on June 18th----

Pirates' rotation averages 5.5 IP/game with a 4.60 ERA.

Cubs SPs are at 5.43 IP/outing and a 4.68 ERA.

Must be some form of parity in play.

The Cardinals have lost 22 of their last 32 games.

The Reds have dropped 24 of their last 34.

Welcome to the fearlessly backsliding NL Central.

Catcher has to give him a path to touch the plate. It didn't look like he did there. Rizzo didn't hit him that hard either.
Negative. Catcher doesn't have to give him a path if he already has the ball.  Here is the rule:

• A runner may not run out of a direct line to the plate in order to initiate contact with the catcher, or any player, covering the plate. If he does, the umpire can call him out even if the player taking the throw loses possession of the ball.

• The catcher may not block the pathway of a runner attempting to score unless he has possession of the ball. If the catcher blocks the runner before he has the ball, the umpire may call the runner safe.

And someone on MLB Radio last night ... I think it was Jim Bowden ... mentioned that catchers are more likely to get hurt now even with "lesser" contact because they're not conditioned to protect themselves from the sort of home plate collisions we were used to seeing in the past.

I was only 2 when this happened and I am as much a traditionalist as anyone when it comes to beisbol, but do we really want to see more of this?

O's have given up at least a handful in 17 straight games. Longest streak in MLB since a Phillies team during Eephus' teenage years (sometime in the 1920s)

What a great game between Colorado and Arizona.  Goldy hitting HR to push Arizona up 3-2, but then Nolan coming on to hit a 2 run triple to give the rockies back the lead.  And then some clutch pitching by Holland to nail down the save.

BTW, Grienke's curve ball is just sexy.

Arenado has activated god mode the last few days.

That one's on (insert Dbacks manager's name here). No way in hell does anyone in their right mind let Grienke face Arenado there after giving up back to back hits.
