2018 MLB Regular Season Thread! Current thread batting average: .420 (1 Viewer)

Dustin Fowler, left his major league debut after rupturing his patella tendon in the top of the 1st, never getting an at bat. It was 112 years to the day that moonlight Graham made his debut. Creepy

interesting fangraphs article: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/technically-baseball-really-is-more-boring/

On average, over the whole sample, 20.1% of plate appearances have been in high-leverage spots, and 42.4% of plate appearances have been in low-leverage spots. This year currently sits at 18.4% and 44.3%, respectively. The former is the lowest rate in the whole window. The latter is the highest rate in the whole window. Again, these swings look small, and we’re talking about a couple of plate appearances per 100, but any shift here is notable, given how stable these numbers have frequently been.
On a per-plate-appearance basis, here is how the league-average leverage index has moved:

The peak occurs in 1976, with an average leverage index of 1.05. The lowest point belongs to the 2017 season in progress, with an average leverage index of 0.96. It doesn’t seem like very much, but given how little the line moves around, this does pass for dramatic. For the sake of reference, in 1976, about 10% of all games went to extra innings, and about 34% of all games were decided by one run. In 2017, about 8% of all games have gone to extra innings, and about 23% of all games have been decided by one run. That’s not everything, but those are meaningful indicators.
Interesting because it seems like there is a similar corollary in the NBA, wherein many teams in both sports have been on a quest to maximize expected values and aim for the highest highs, leading to higher variance and thereby lower "competitiveness".

Angel Hernandez filling a discrimination lawsuit against mlb. His lack of world series games has nothing to do with his competence and everything to do with his nationality. No word yet if CB Bucknor will be joining him.

Question: I record John Sterling's Yankee call most games, because he's a buffoon and there's usually a 99% chance of him saying something stupid or missing a call badly. When the Yanks aren't playing, what other announcers would fill the gap for stuff like this? With MLB TV, I can listen to any TV or radio broadcaster. The possibility of dumb or controversial statements would be a bonus.

Somehow, someway, my hatred for Dave Roberts just continues to grow.

7 innings / 85 pitches of pure dominance for Wood tonight, his spot due up first in bottom of 8th and he gets pulled.

Pollock PH'ed first in the 9th, then Wood was pulled for the righty/righty-beater Baez, then was kept in for Goldschmidt. Was end of the 3rd time through the order. Don't hate it tbh.

Two problems with it

1 - he let him warm up. He's pitching at an ace level right now. He's not a decoy

2 - His spot is up first. If Baez goes out there and craps the bed, who do you go to? You're basically forcing Jansen to leadoff the bottom of the 8th if it goes sideways and you need him to save the top half of it. I'd rather save Baez for Wood possibly getting in trouble than play with 2 outs in the bottom half when I'm potentially tied or down.

Hindsight is 20/20, and it obviously worked

The Nationals. Bob Carpenter and FP Santangelo are morons.

I'll never forget my favorite Bob Carpenter moment, "Ryan Zimmerman could have won the Gold Glove last year if it wasn't for some errors". Thanks captain obvious. If you make a bunch of errors, you're not going to win the Gold Glove.

Yeah I've been saying this for years, FP is a super homer most of the time which makes it even more unbearable.  Like the Tigers they have a pretty bad TV crew and a really good radio crew.

Orioles are the opposite, Joe Angel should have retired 30 years ago, he gets easily confused.  Gary Thorne on the other hand, is a national treasure.

I don't think FP is that bad, but maybe it's all still relative to his predecessor (Rob Dibble) for me to realize how bad FP is.

I nearly saw Frank-Paul Santangelo's MLB debut ... missed it by two days, saw his second game instead. And he's a lefty- (well, switch-) hitting outfielder who wore No. 7 and played for the Expos. He's AOK in my book.

Color guys come and go.  There are always younger ex-players.  Most don't have enough to say about the game to talk for 500 hours per year about the subject.

The Giants have taken this a step further this year.  With Mike Krukow's reduced travel schedule, they've been rotating the slot on road trips to a bunch of inexperienced jock commentators.  Working in a booth with a pro like Duane Kuiper has to help but it's still the deep end for a first timer.  They had former Giants catcher Brian Johnson doing the 4th of July game in Detroit and man, was he hopeless.  He sounded exactly like John C. Reilly in Step Brothers and repeated a story in the 4th inning that he told earlier in the game.

It makes you appreciate the guys we're complaining about in this thread.

White Sox radio is awful. Ed Farmer thinks every transgression on the baseball field should be settled with a purpose pitch, Just a dumb, archaic neverwas of yesteryear. Darrin Jackson is boring and drab, you've heard their banter once, you've heard it 100 times.

Home TV broadcasts for White Sox (Hawk free!) are really, really good. Jason Binetti is handling play by play now and Steve Stone is as good as it gets. It's informative, but light hearted and filled with pop culture references and wit.

You can tell Steve Stone is enjoying himself again now that it's not 162 games with that blowhard Harrelson.

Rod Allen must have told the story about how Kinny (Kenny) Rogers grew up on a strawberry farm 100 times

And agree with the fish taco guy on Gary Thorne. Him and Jon Miller are 1a and 1b now that Vin's dropped the mic
Yeah I like Miller as well.  We lost Enberg this past year also, he was really good with the Friars and his retirement was lost in the Vin parade.

If you like homer broadcasters and can take some shtick, Ted Leitner for the Friars on radio is pretty great.  His "my Padres" shtick is fine with me, he's better than the idiot homers like Sterling, FP, and Rod Allen IMHO.  Hawk bothers me some because I hate the Sux but Ted is hawk lite, so I can see why Hawk has lasted so long.
