2018 MLB Regular Season Thread! Current thread batting average: .420 (1 Viewer)

@TBTimes_Rays

#Rays will open vs #RedSox with Archer, Snell, bullpen day, and Eovaldi

#Rays Cash said with their four man rotation planned around the high number of early off days the “bullpen day” can be shifted around. They’re using it on 3rd day to start to better line up other staters going forward. And to protect Eovaldi, coming off 2nd TJ surgery
Tampa going with the bullpen day on the third game of the season. I have to admit I'm really curious to see how this plays out.

I assume like this:  :tfp:

The MiLB extra innings man-on-second rule is dumb even by baseball standards
I just don't understand what they are trying to accomplish.  I understood why they did it in the WBC (help save pitching because it was a spring training event and pitchers were being used cautiously) but it makes no sense for regular season baseball.  It's a softball rule utilized originally because that was such a pitching dominate game they had trouble generating baserunners.  It makes no sense for Major League Baseball.

It is not being implemented.

Broken wrist for Justin Turner.  The Dodgers have a number of options involving Forsythe, Utley, Taylor and Hernandez.

Oakland signs Cahill and brings Brett Anderson back on a minor league deal. Joe Blanton and Vin Mazarro are still free agents, right? Get that band back together!

I think we're going to see a lot more defensive shifting this year. The Phillies are talking about implementing "aggressive shifting" where Rhys Hoskins will move back and forth from RF to LF depending on the batter. The Astros went experimental yesterday and played 4 OF's and no 3B against Matt Adams. Will be interesting to see when/how the league adjusts.

That Phillies thing was mentioned in their thread, to which I commented on it being a pace of play nightmare. On the bright side of this, I have Rhys shares in an LF/CF/RF league and getting this guy RF eligibility via shifts, ala Rizzo getting 2B eligibility last year, is good news.

Do you actually get credit for a game played at a position of you move there for one batter a game in a shift situation?  I wouldn't think that would actually change your position on the lineup which would be what I would think would need to happen to get credit for a game played at a particular position.  If you play one batter of a game does that count as a game played?

It does in most, if not all league. Now some leagues may have a difference between games started and games played to gain eligibility, but Rizzo got 2B eligibility in most leagues because Joe Maddon, Super Genius moved him around on shifts where he was deemed the 2nd baseman for that play, thus a game played at the position. No reason to think that this wouldn't work the same way.

Here is some discussion on it from last year.

Mets needed to play D'Arnaud in the field and Collins was doing his best to hide him depending on the spray chart of the batter

When the Mets are in the field, Terry Collins keeps switching d'Arnaud and Asdrubal between 3B and SS

Offical scorekeeper keeping up with the due diligence

Swap

Does the scorekeeper actually need to change the position every batter? There are numerous shifts where 3B play on the other side of 2B and the SS stays put through out the league. Just curious.

This was not just shifting one player. They actually were swapping positions.

According to the MLB rule book, official scorers don't have to make exceptions for shifts, but this was an extreme case.

I guess I am just surprised that the official lineup would change to have him at 2B for that one batter.  Typically only when substitutions occur or if switching completely for the position occurs it would be in the scorebook.  I wouldn't think a batter situation would change anything.  I wasn't quite sure how exactly the Rizzo 2B eligibility happened because I didn't watch many Cubs games.  Thought maybe he moved to 2B for some other reason beyond just the shift.

The Rizzo situation has to do with the first baseman's glove. When he shifts in and Baez covers first, some umpires have required him to switch gloves, although Maddon has pointed out that's not actually a rule:

“It’s clearly ambiguous regarding the glove,” Maddon said after the Cubs topped the Giants 1-0 to take the early advantage in the best-of-five series that will continue with Game 2 on Saturday night at Wrigley. “There is no such rule, but it’s just an interpretation on their part — this is what they would like to see. I have no problem with it. It’s the semantics involving … the first baseman having a first baseman’s glove. I still will argue the point, even though Rizzo is playing (near the mound), that he’s still the first baseman. So it comes down to proximity to first base.

“Again, it’s a semantical argument. Probably some lawyers put this whole thing together. But for me, we’re happy to change gloves. It just takes a little bit longer.”
And then that glove switch can affect if he's scored as the 1B or not:

The Cubs have done this exact same thing a few times already this year. Here are the guidelines according to Elias Sports Bureau:

1. Whichever player is wearing the first baseman’s glove shall always be called the first baseman. If Rizzo (or whoever is playing first base at the time) keeps the first baseman’s glove on, then he is considered the first baseman. If Rizzo changes gloves and another player puts the first baseman’s glove on, the other player shall be considered the first baseman and Rizzo will be credited with playing the other position.

2. If Rizzo changes gloves and another player occupies the area around first base (example: holding on a baseunner), then the player holding the runner or whoever is in the vicinity of first base, shall be considered the first baseman and Rizzo will be credited with playing the position of the player now occupying first base (this will probably be the second baseman).

3. If Rizzo changes gloves and all other players appear to be in their normal position, then Rizzo will be considered the first baseman.
So that logic may not apply to outfielders swapping positions or the 3B switching sides, etc.

This is good info.  Had not seen it broken down like this before.  Thanks, Sparty!

Yankees batting Judge, Stanton and Bird at the top of the lineup is quality spring training shtick.

If they carry it over to the regular season, it would be revolutionary

Our favorite handsy fatty will be there opening day.

Derek Holland and I are heading to the bold predictions thread
I witnessed that last year first hand. If you predict an ERA under 5.00 I'm opening that ridiculous prediction thread I talked about. You and Gally can play around in there.

Giants fans seem a bit testy after losing half their rotation. It's a fun, silly idea that I doubt really gets enforced. You'd have to be a real moron to end up paying the higher price even if they did try to enforce it.

The Oaklands seem intent on trying to create a rivalry where none exists.  I watch the A's and respect their efforts to assemble a competitive team under their financial constraints.  I hope they get their stadium deal done and stay in the Bay Area.

The Giants' rivals are the Dodgers, dirt bikes, pigeons and the aging curve.

If I set the line of Phillies games managed by Kapler @ 255, you taking the over or under on that?
Sign me up for the over.  Do not think anymore.
I'll take the over.  Kapler isn't afraid to try new things and I think he's smart enough to figure out which of them work.

The Phillies have some rotation depth issues but otherwise seem pretty solid.  Kapler will share in the credit as their young talent develops.
