More #Rayschat

In the 9th they had Alvarado face a lefty, then they put him at first base for Roe to face a righty, then did another double switch and put him back at pitcher to face another lefty.

:lmao:

Yankees did that last year with Bryan Mitchell and I'm fairly certain he made an error on his one play.

This walk year seems to be going splendidly for The Haver Of Pain

Josh Donaldson - 3B -  Blue Jays

Josh Donaldson (calf) suffered a setback during his rehab in Florida and will be reevaluated in three weeks.

An MRI revealed that Donaldson has an acute strain of his left calf. He suffered the setback while fielding grounders at the Blue Jays spring training facility in Florida. Because of the aggravation, Donaldson will now be out for at least another three weeks, and likely won't be able to return to the Toronto lineup until the end of July.

Unbelievable.  And I kept this clown over Paxton.   :ptts:

End of July is nice timing to make him impossible for the Jays to trade.

How the #### would I know. Rays twitter made a big deal about it today so I figured it was unique.
It was the fact they put him at 1B.

In other news Corey Kluber imploded tonight, that’s about as rare as a far chick at a buffet only eating Vegetables.

If you guys haven’t figured it out yet, I really, really dislike Dave Roberts
Yeah, Puig blew a relatively routine play, so he gets to shoulder the blame here. But don’t overlook the fact that this idiot, in a 2-1 game, pinch hit for his pitcher in the bottom of the 5th with a runner on first and 2 outs in some fruitless effort to extend an inning. Stripling’s still at 85ish pitches and has 5-6-7 due up in the top of the 6th. Those three had combined for a bunt single and a walk against him in 6 PAs. Great way to burn out your bullpen arms.

And don’t overlook the fact that the guy he used as a pinch hitter cant play a whole game right now because of a hamstring issue, but it’s OK to put him in a position to run the bases.

But this strategy is exactly what the no-DH crowd loves!  ;)

Red Sox just signed what’s left of Brandon Phillips to a minor league deal which leads me to believe there’s even less left of Pedroia

Yeah, I guess Houston always does the LF swap.

Theoretically (if it wouldn't break him), when Brendan McKay gets there, he could 'open' the game pitching for a couple innings, go play 1B for the rest of the game and come back in and close.
This sounds amazing. Little surprised they haven’t tried this with him in the minors yet.

Jayson Werth retired today after 15 seasons in the bigs, 29 bWAR and $136M earned.  He would have put up much better career numbers but he didn't become a regular until age 29.  He was drafted as a catcher and was on his third organization before the Dodgers gave him a decent shot in 2004.  Then he got hurt and missed most of the next two seasons.  By then, he was with the Phillies who used him in a platoon with Geoff Jenkins.  He finally broke out against RHP the following year but by then he was 30.

In spite of that, he managed to have a nice career with some very familiar names on his top comps.

  1.     Justin Upton (953.1)
  2.     Kevin McReynolds (938.1)
  3.     Bill Nicholson (938.0)
  4.     J.D. Drew (931.0)
  5.     Cliff Floyd (930.8)
  6.     Michael Cuddyer (929.3)
  7.     Nick Swisher (929.3)
  8.     Kirk Gibson (920.9)
  9.     Hunter Pence (920.2)
  10.     Jeff Burroughs (918.2)

1987 Cardinals did this down the stretch.  They didn't have a regular right fielder, so they used RF to stash a pitcher and bring him back in later in the inning.  They won the pennant doing this.

First time I saw this strategy deployed was by Robert Guillaume's character in The Kid From Left Field, who stashed a pitcher at 1B mid-inning during Game 7 of the World Series.

more interesting, two days ago, when they signed him, it was I think the 16th anniversay of Bartolo being traded to Montreal for Phillips, Cliff Lee and Sizemore.

The Former is still bartolo while the other three were presumed retired.

Bartolo was 29 at the time

NYY / BOS match up this weekend pits the two highest winning percentages to meet this late in the season since 1954 when the Yankees and Indians met in Sept of that year

It's also the only time two teams with this high of a winning percentage, within the same division, have met this late in the season.

I'm looking forward to it

Yanks/Sox are this weekend?  And I was planning on watching both prime time games Saturday and Sunday too.  Oh well.  I guess I will invite some people over for beers on the deck instead.

Steve Pearce traded to the Red Sox.

I wonder if he’s the first guy to play for every team in the current AL East?
Kelly Johnson did it recently as well.

As far as I can tell, new Boston 1B/OF Steve Pearce will be just the 5th player to play for every team in a division, with Kelly Johnson (AL East), C. Izturis (NL Central), Mark McLemore (AL West), Steve Finley (NL West).

Just saw the five players listed above, but  Matt Herges also did it in the NL West.

And obviously, this is using the current MLB alignment. McLemore played 21 games for the Astros when they were in the NL.

I have so many injured players and only two DL spots, that I'm considering dropping the carcass. Talk me out of it (or into it).

Is it possible for Ryan Braun to play 3 games in a row without getting hurt? This guy is more delicate than fine china.
