Both Puig and Wood are both on expiring contracts.  Kluber has one additional option year.

It all depends on the prospect of course but I like the idea of Cleveland selling high on Kluber.  He's twice as valuable now as he'll be next off-season.

The Mets willing to take on Cano's contract, in order to get their hands on a closer, is fantastic shtick.

@Da Gildz
How does Jerry DiPoto keep his job? He failed to build even a mediocre team around a generational talent like Trout, and now he is tearing down a solid Seattle team to go full tank-mode to get draft picks that may or may not pan out...years from now.

So Mets are giving up Bruce & Swarzak to offset some of Cano's 5 year, $120m contract but are also throwing in two of their top prospects all to get a closer. When Britton, Kimbrel, & Miller are all free agents. Such a Met thing to do. Its amazing that the same ####ty organizations keep doing the same ####ty things.

Mets’ deal for Robinson Cano, Edwin Diaz all but done

By Mike Puma

November 29, 2018 | 11:34pm

After days of rumblings and speculation, talks between the Mariners and Mets reached a crescendo Thursday on a blockbuster trade that would bring Robinson Cano and stud closer Edwin Diaz to Citi Field, allowing new general manager Brodie Van Wagenen to potentially strengthen his lineup and bullpen in one swoop.

According to sources, the framework of a deal has been reached and a trade between the two teams could become official as soon as Friday. The Mets are prepared to send Jay Bruce and Anthony Swarzak to the Mariners with former first-round draft picks Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn and likely Gerson Bautista. Van Wagenen on Thursday began informing Mets players included in the deal to prepare for a possible trade.

Definitely a weird deal. Dumping the Bruce contract is good, Cano is owed a ton but he's still usable and probably will be for a few more years. Only other thing I can think of is that Diaz is under relatively cheap team control for a couple more years and they could potentially flip him for better prospects down the line

Yeah, it seems like a pretty terrible deal for the Mets cause paying 38, 39 and 40 year old Cano is probably going to play out as Pujols is (if not worse).  They did dump the Bruce contract and if memory serves, the Mets lineup was a dumpster fire last year anyway.  Wasn't Asdrubal Cabrerra their cleanup hitter most of the year?  Cano should be at least a decent offensive weapon for the next 2, maybe 3 years at least.  And maybe he can find his supplier with the non-traceable PED's, just saying.

So it seems a pretty steep price to pay with the prospects to get Diaz who is obviously the jewel of the trade.  But, prized relievers have garnered some pretty hefty returns in the past.  Chapman immediately comes to mind as he fetched four good prospects.  Red Sox had to also part with 4 decent prospects to get Kimbrel from the Padres (only one who panned out really sorta was Margot).  So it's not a terrible return for the Mets.  But in order for the Mets to really have this trade make sense is for the team to improve 12-15 games in the next year or two.  And considering they seem to be shopping at least Syndegaard, well, not sure that is happening so who knows what is going on.

Hard to judge a trade until the deal is finalized and we have a better idea of how much of Cano's deal is getting paid by Seattle.  But win or lose during the regular season, Jerry DiPoto is the King of the Hot Stove.

Yeah I guess is Seattle takes a big chunk of Cano's contract PLUS Bruce & Swarzak salaries I can see why the Mets would ship their top 2 prospects. It still doesn't seem like a good idea to me though to trade for a young non-established closer. He was a stud last year but there is a long list of young relievers who fizzle out.

He did a solid job with the Angels. Pujols and Hamilton deals were reportedly moves by the owner. Awful deals no doubt, but there's not much you can do about getting handcuffed like that. That limits available money for other deals.

He got a couple good years from Frieri and Street for nothing. Cj Wilson was overpaid but still brought value. He traded for Skaggs, Tropeano, and Heaney for little to nothing.

He could have done better and had some missteps, but he was hardly a bad GM. He had a crappy manager and a handsy, clueless owner who made things much more difficult.

Fascinating that Matt Moore can still find employment
I never liked him even when he has that 30 game run where he looked great.

Tigers just looking for fill at this point until they get all these prospects up.  For $2.5m they got a guy that could maybe start 15-20 games, could be worse.

Jean Segura coming to the Phillies. J.P. Crawford part of the deal. Nightengale says Phillies will still pursue Machado to play 3B

Phillies, Mariners In Agreement On Jean Segura Trade

By Mark Polishuk | December 2, 2018 at 10:40pm CDT

10:40pm: Segura is expected to waive his no-trade clause to accommodate the trade, MLB.com’s Jon Paul Morosi reports (Twitter link).

9:59pm: The two teams have agreed to the trade “in principle,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweets.  The deal will be announced on Monday, and Crawford will be part of the return going to Seattle.  There has been speculation that Carlos Santana could be sent to the M’s in order to balance out the money involved in the deal, as per Fancred’s Jon Heyman, though the “Mariners may be resistant to that.”  Santana’s involvement would add an entirely new aspect to this trade, as the first baseman is owed $35MM over the next two years.  The Mariners did take Jay Bruce and Anthony Swarzak back from the Mets to help offset Cano’s salary, however.

9:10pm: The Phillies and Mariners are “in serious talks” about a trade that would send shortstop Jean Segura to Philadelphia, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports (Twitter link).  Segura would have to waive his no-trade clause to allow the move.  Rosenthal writes that the M’s “have [their] next deal lined up” after the trade of Robinson Canoand Edwin Diaz becomes official, and since that deal could be finalized by Monday, it hints at a possible timeline about any potential Segura movement.  Yesterday, Rosenthal reported that Seattle had interest in top Phillies prospect J.P. Crawford as a potential piece of the return for Segura.

Segura was first linked to the Phillies last week, and he has been a popular figure in trade rumors ever since the Mariners shifted into payroll-cutting mode.  The Yankees also had some interest in Segura, while the Padres and Mariners discussed a potential blockbuster that would’ve sent Segura and Mike Leake to San Diego in exchange for Wil Myers.  With a .308/.353/.449 slash line and 41 homers over the last three seasons, it isn’t surprising that Segura is generating such interest.  He doesn’t turn 29 until March, and he is controlled through the 2022 season on a contract that will pay him $58MM over those four seasons (including a $1MM buyout of a $17MM club option for 2023).

Shortstop was a major problem area for the Phillies last season, as Crawford hasn’t shown much in limited MLB action, and super-utilityman Scott Kingery also didn’t produce at the position in his first big league season.  Manny Machado has been widely speculated to be a top target for the Phillies this winter, though in the event of a Segura trade, Machado would be pursued as a third baseman while Segura handled shortstop.

Dealing Segura would be the latest move in a rather stunning roster overhaul orchestrated by Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto, who has already traded James Paxton, Mike Zunino, Alex Colome, and (all but officially) Cano and Diaz in less than four weeks’ time.  Leake and Kyle Seager are also being shopped as Dipoto looks to move as many long-term commitments as possible to reposition the M’s for a return to contention in 2020 or 2021.  These deals have already netted the Mariners a significant amount of young talent to help their thin farm system, and even more could be on the way via the Segura deal, or if Dipoto considered moving more controllable talent like Mitch Haniger or Marco Gonzales.  Crawford, for instance, has been a consensus top-16 prospect in the sport (as per Baseball America and Baseball America) in each of the last three seasons, though his relative lack of success at the Triple-A level has somewhat dimmed his stock.

It’s a great deal for the Mets.  They’re in win now mode.  Championship level staff, build around it.  Locking up arguably best closer in game at 24 years old for 4 years?  Anyone who thinks this is a bad deal for the Mets is just lost.  Were prime years Kimbrel and Kenley Jansen worth a teams’ top prospect?  Of course they were.  Worth more even.  Brody believes Diaz is that guy now.   He’s worth 4-5 W’s on his own

No brainer.

The Mariners haven't been shy about taking on short-term salary in return so their 2019 payroll won't be rock bottom.  A lot can still happen between now and opening day.

Segura's deal was pretty team friendly.  Crawford's status as a top prospect has lost much of its luster after two underwhelming years in the high minors.  There's a reasonable probability that Segura will be the better player for the four remaining years of his contract.

I think the Mariners decision to blow it up is the right one.  The big question is whether they've received enough young talent in return.  Jerred Kelenic could make Dipoto look like a genius.

Their 2019 salary will have a hard time being rock bottom so long as Tampa Bay is still around

Oh, and the fact they still have Felix Hernandez and Mike Leake (Both with ntc) and Kyle Seager currently on the books for over $60M between the three of them.  Add on Bruce, Dee Gordon, Santana - Mariner's still have quite a bit of money on their books

I honestly don’t see how they can even sniff the playoffs in that division.  You know the Phillies will make a splash.  The Braves will be very good and the Nats will still be good.  Can the Mets realistically overtake any of those 3 teams (even with this move)?  The lineup still looks pretty bad.  But maybe they plan to make more moves.

This is just the 1st of his moves.  They’ll upgrade at C.  Could make a move for a 1b and/or OF.  Or once Alonso is up for good, McNeil goes to 3b.  Also will add more pen help.  Brody is all in with this team.  Could see Wheeler being dealt for an OF also.

They were a 77 win team last year.  Let's say the Cano-Diaz deal was +6 wins which is pretty generous.  They still need to find another 10 from somewhere.

Will the nats still be that good?

Improved pitching should net them a couple if Matz and Thor start all year. Maybe Conforto bounces back with a healthy season and Cespedes hits the ground running when he returns in the summer. I don't have anything beyond that, but it's a long off-season to come. They need some help and some luck right now, but I can't imagine they're done making moves.

 @jonmorosi

Sources: Patrick Corbin signing is imminent. He will receive a 6-year contract, as @BNightengale first indicated this morning. @MLB @MLBNetwork

....I'm guessing Phillies?  Seems like they are the most in.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking too.  Nightengale also reported that the Phillies were all-in on him today.  Seems like more than a coincidence.

Holy balls. So happy to be wrong.

Nationals have agreed to terms on a deal with Patrick Corbin, according to a person familiar. Pending physical.

I assume this means Bryce is bound for elsewhere, which is probably the best move for the club given the glut of OF talent but will break my kids' hearts.

Also means the Phils have that much more money on hand for their Harper/Machado bids and are probably in the mood for an NL East arms race.

Interesting tidbit from the Athletic about Corbin contract

In addition to the six-year, $140 commitment, which trumps Yu Darvish’s $126 million last winter, Corbin’s deal has consequences. Because he declined a qualifying offer from the Diamondbacks and the Nationals exceeds the luxury tax last year, they will forfeit their second and fifth round picks in next year’s draft as well as $1 million in international bonus pool money.

Japanese LHP Yusei Kikuchi was posted by Seibu Lions.  He's on the short side but supposedly throws pretty hard.  He'll turn 28 before opening day but he has more mileage on his arm than Corbin.

And in other news from Japan, former Angels & Padres OF Jabari Blash signed with the Rakuten Golden Eagles.  My Japanese grandma would totally mangle the pronunciation of his name.

Anybody know anything about the prospects
Luke Weaver is a RHP with 35 MLB starts under his belt.  He's been susceptible to the long ball which could be a problem in Arizona.

Carson Kelly also has MLB service time but has been blocked by Molina.  He should be an every day catcher.

Andy Young is a AA infielder with some on-base skills.

It's not a exciting package for one year of Goldschmidt but both Weaver and Kelly should step right into the 25 man roster.

Tough to call Weaver and Kelly prospects anymore.  Weaver's a serviceable starter with upside.  He'll start for the Dbacks.  Kelly I'm less sure about.  Bat's light.  Know almost nothing about Young.  If the Cards can sign Goldschmidt, it's tough to think they could have done much better.  If he walks, losing Weaver will hurt.  But he was depth if their rotation is healthy this season.
