2018 NHL Offseason Thread: E.Karlsson is a Shark! (1 Viewer)

Tavares tells NYI not to trade him at the deadline, refused extension talks, and then skips out of town. Wow!

Imagine the haul the NYI could of received in a trade
Imagine if they had fired Garth Snow years ago and actually had a real NHL arena to play in at some point.

Sorry to see Tim Schaller leave.
I do like the Chris Wagner signing, which I saw on Twitter late last night but hasn’t been posted on many of the FA trackers.

Local kid, hard hitter, will be a nice fit on a third or fourth line.

If you subscribe to The Athletic, read the latest story on Tortorella and Jack Johnson. It’s awesome.

This. Omg.

Johnson’s comments felt like a slap, Tortorella said.

“That’s what pisses me off,” he said. “He doesn’t have enough balls to call me back, because I’ve tried to get in touch with him. You don’t #### on an organization that’s done nothing but try to help you. We all know Jack has had some problems along the way here; it’s very well-chronicled. All we’ve done is try to ####### help him.

“I love the ####### guy (Johnson). I’ve had him on the Olympic team. I get him on the World Cup team. I love the guy. But for him to do this is ridiculous. He has got to start pointing the finger at himself, not other people.

“If I’m a (former) teammate of his and I play against him next year … my gosh … ”

I don't mind the Wings signings too much.  No outrageous terms, and they all can contribute.  They need to commit to some youth more, but maybe they can off load Nyquist or Helm at the deadline next year.

Thompson is ok I guess. Not impressed with the return really, but something was off with ROR in Buffalo too. He’s always down on himself.
He's been down since Colorado.  He is a great talent, but seems chronically depressed.  I stayed at a holiday inn about five years ago.

I am pleased.

Berglund and Sobotka were dead weight.
Sounds like Sabres wanted Thompson plus a 1st and 2nd. Blues threw in Berglund and Sobotka to balance out the cap hit.

Still good for Blues they didn’t give up any of their best prospects, have top-10 protection on the 2019 1st, AND pushed the 2nd to 2021.

I’m just hoping getting ROR out of the room is somehow a good thing for the other guys. He’s a really good player but never made sense the team was so bad given their talent level. I like Berglund as a versatile piece even if he’s older.

Berglund is a great dude and on the ice is a possession driver but he will score you a few goals and nothing else on offense which is really weird.

Sobotka was pretty worthless last year. I don’t think you’ll really like having him on the team sans for a few moments he shows his old self.

Thompson could very well develop into a nice player. He needs time though. Needs to develop his game and fill out. I don’t know if you guys will throw him in the lineup or not but he probably needs a year in the AHL, ideally.

I think you should be pretty underwhelmed with this return. I’d think ROR is worth more.

Wasn't a big fan of the return either, would have just had Uncle Terry pay the 7.5m if it brought in a better prospect.  The 2019 1st is lottery protected as well like San Jose's the Sabres have.  The Sabres take in 3 contracts at the cost of ROR's.  Not to mention Sheary and Hunwick's.  Hopefully they get a bridge deal done soon with Reinhardt and still have one move up their sleeve.

Really interesting nugget I read in a Mirtle piece on the Athletic about the Leafs last night:

Of the top 27 players in points per game over the last decade, Tavares is the only one who has changed teams via free agency. (Four others: St. Louis, Hall, Kessel and Seguin were traded — yes, three of them by Chiarelli.)

Contrast that with what goes on in the NBA, especially in light of LeBron jumping to the Lakers last night.

Yeah, I saw in a couple different spots people trying to come up with the last superstar in his prime to sign with a new team. The two examples I saw were Zdeno Chara to Boston and Scott Niedermayer to Anaheim. Obviously those were both franchise changing moves for the signing team.

Some interesting parting shots these past couple days:

Tage Thompson - says he's happy to get an NHL chance and not be "pigeon-holed" like he was in St. Louis, a veteran team that couldn't tolerate mistakes. Of #Sabres:  "They really have big plans for me here to play a lot and put up points."

New York Islanders made a point of calling out "individual success" in their statement re: Tavares, that some people felt was a slight.

...and then there's the whole Tortorella/Jack Johnson/Rutherford war of words including JJ saying he was happy to be going to a "winning environment" and Tortorella firing off (justly) in every direction.

Not exactly earth shattering stuff but maybe Sens are actually smarter than a box of rocks.

@NYP_Brooksie: Senators have given interested teams permission to talk contract extension with Karlsson. Sounds as if he is looking for Doughty deal (8x11)

Would be great if they sign Nylander to a huge offer sheet. Then the Leafs pass so Toronto gets four 1st round picks. Then Isles win the lottery and Toronto adds Jack Hughes. Then Lamoriello goes back to Toronto.

Woof.  That is going to look really bad in a couple of years imo.
Agreed.  Hate the term.  But he should easily score 30 with johnny for the next couple of years.  Fills an immediate void.

Not sure if this was posted. The cheap year is potential lockout year.

@KKurzNHL: For what it’s worth, here’s the breakdown of Tomas Hertl’s contract ($22.5 M total):

2018-19 $6 M
2019-20 $6.25 M
2020-21 $4.75 M
2021-22 $5.5 M

This one won’t get a lot of play, but the Preds signed C Colin Blackwell to a two-way deal. One of the classiest hockey players I’ve ever met. He played for Rochester last season. Hope he can crack an NHL roster soon.

Maybe it will help overshadow the outrage that is stemming from signing Zac Rinaldo.

Amerks fans pretty bummed to lose him

Max Domi scored 9 goals in 1370 minutes (.39 per 60 minutes) and 4 came on an empty net

Zac Rinaldo scored 5 goals in 598 minutes (.50 per 60 minutes)

I doubt Domi generated the same level of disgust from the fans.

In Rinaldo, the Predators have acquired a player who has demonstrated total indifference to the rules of hockey, as well as a player with complete disregard for the safety of other players in the league. This acquisition is a complete waste of time and money, and it challenges the good faith built up by both David Poile and Peter Laviolette over the past four seasons.

May God have mercy on our souls.
