2019 College football thread - It's 2020, yo. Go to the new thread. (2 Viewers)

Thanks. Didn’t expect OSU to let me down finally against.....Rutgers. That was a surprise.
Numerous starters did not start, and the ones that did were benched early.

Two players got their first career TDs today. Another got his first of the season, which was the 2nd of his career.

Given what happened to Tua, this was the right thing to do.

This is great but the starters played the first half where I had the 31.5. I just needed that guy not to fumble the punt. Oh well.

Wow what a BS call. Initially called PI and waved off because of deflection. Then a full minute later, they change it to def holding. Oklahoma huge bail out.
This was the turning point. Baylor was about to send them packing up 28-3. This gave OK life. Baylor never recovered.

@DanWolken: From what I’m seeing, Scott Frost’s contract terms basically just reset with this new extension, which means his buyout would be back to $26 million going into next year. I’m sorry but that’s just irresponsible.

Why’d they do this? Where was he going?

I didn't understand the extension for Frost to begin with. The buyout news is flat out puzzling.
Not sure why these buyouts are a thing.

If you are going to pay someone why defer the compensation with a buyout?  What other fields does this really ever work in?

Yea he actually seems like he gets it.
In Tua's case it's a no-brainer he should have been sitting, IMO.  However, I can see how it's tough for coaches - the players want to play, they have NFL aspirations and they are playing for awards (Heisman, etc.).  I guess my point is there's frequently a gray line and not obvious when to pull a guy.  But I do think it's fair to criticize when it seems obvious, like this case.

Thanks for the response, I agree they are married to FBS for a while but I think they are chasing fools gold

I just think resources would better allocated to M/W basketball and hockey and M Lax where they could get good much quicker as I dont think they realize the arms race that is FBS football

They're a great school but need to realize they're not Michigan or No Carolina or even Rutgers athletically.  They seem like the youngest brother trying to prove himself to his older more accomplished brothers
Quite frankly, it really seems like most G5 programs are chasing fool's gold in the current setup.

Re: allocation of resources ... that's the common refrain up here, especially among taxpayers and such. State support for the flagship university long has been a bone of contention, since the school is located two hours west of where all of the "beautiful people" live, and the legislature notoriously is full of graduates of the private schools in and around Boston. But the academic profile of the school has been climbing ... it's far tougher to get into UMass than it ever was, and through various honors programs and scholarships is becoming a much more viable option for the cream of the academic crop in the state, especially in the current college financial landscape.

It just isn't as simple as taking money earmarked for football and moving it elsewhere. Title IX issues would complicate things even were they to drop to FCS, never mind suddenly ax 85 scholarships completely. A brand-new training center and locker room facility just opened for basketball, funded by a private donor. Maybe a league like the AAC gives them a closer look if they start getting back to more consistent winning (they're currently 4-0 to start the year). Hockey already is in one of the top leagues in the country, made the national championship game last year and has made the money commitments to keep a great coaching staff intact. Fundraising efforts are well under way for locker room renovations. Lacrosse's biggest challenge always will be that there is no league comparable to the ACC, B1G or Ivy that could/would take them.

I think they do realize the arms race of FBS. I don't think they have any delusions of ever being a national power, but they can be more consistently competitive. Meanwhile, the school as a whole aspires to maintain a strong national profile ... if you look at U.S. News and World Report rankings, their peers are mostly P5-type public universities, and they are ranked much higher than a majority of other P5 public schools. UConn's ranking is very similar, and those two are far and away ahead of any of the other New England public universities. Not surprisingly, both schools face the same challenge with football, but I think both see dropping/de-emphasizing football as a step in the wrong direction. Despite public opinion/outcry.

I have no problem with it. They are committed to Frost for the long haul.  What Nebraska needs more than anything is some continuity.  Why not?

Probably don't want other schools telling recruits Frost might not be around after year 3. Not undeserved, but there have been some short leashes lately.

They announced a $155 million facility upgrade and might want to show that Frost will be around to finish that process.  Maybe some of that pledged money goes away if there is coaching turnover.

Could have been 10 years for all I care.

I heard when Stoops turned down FSU he recommended Frost.

That laast part was a joke  ;)

Awful awful decision from Nebraska
Why?  They are committed to Frost for the long haul.  They need some stability. Many think Frost might be the ONLY guy for the job. Who alse are they going to get?

He would probably quit before they fire him unless there is a scandal. Don't have to worry about the buyout then.

I agree. Right now, Frost is NU’s best chance at a return to prominence.

But where else would he go? He could be on a month to month contract and he'd still be there years from now.

Do you think coaches can recruit on a month to month contract? Isn't it standard for most college coaches to always have a 4 to 5 year contract that gets extended to keep it at that number?  This is just a little longer.  ;)

The Auburn internet is buzzing that Gus is going to get #### canned this week.  Like beat writers think it's happening.

It's the internet, so I'm sure it's bull####, but I so badly want to believe.
You gotta think Arkansas would be walking on clouds if that were to happen.

on the flip side, watching Auburn and FSU go head to head for a coach would be highly entertaining.

I looked up his buyout earlier this morning: $27 million. :jordanlaughgif:

Edit: I don't think Bama fans can reasonably get away with doing that "please keep him" line. That goofy offense gives Saban fits.

Their losses are to LSU, Florida and Georgia. Tough to hate him for that, even though you eventually have to win those games.

Really the only one they reasonably should have been expected to win is Florida.

pulling hard for SUNY-Maritime here

thankfully St. Norbert's lost Saturday or they could have theoretically squared up against Whitewater. nobody wanted that.
There was some serious heartburn over a 5-5 team getting in. That and some Hardin-Baylor honk crying that his team has the toughest bracket and UMU has tomato cans to play.  :lmao:

Since he signed his extension in December of 17, he is a combined 0-6 vs UGA, UA, & LSU.  Additionally, he's 6-15 overall against that same three.

Pete Campbell breaks it down
Doesn’t seem ideal.

But would Auburn really shell out that buyout with no guarantee of a better replacement. FSU ‘insiders’ speculate the Memphis coach is the front-runner. Is that caliber of candidate worth tossing Gus aside?
