fypUsing the tried and true method that Big 12 defenses are literally never good.
YesThought experiment:
All of Alabama's starting 22 goes down at once. Going into the semifinal game versus Notre Dame, all of Bama's offense and defense will be second-stringers. We'll let them keep their kicker, punter, and long snapper -- but their returners, too, have to be second string. Saban and staff have a full week to prepare.
Does the Crimson Tide second string beat Notre Dame's starters? Is it close? Could ND's starters boat-race Bama's second string?
I think the game is probably close and the winner would depend on who is Bama's backup QB and how good are they?Thought experiment:

ND would win easily IMO. Losing 1 key player can impact, especially at on field leadership positions like LB, S and OL.Thought experiment:

This is the content I subscribe for.Using the tried and true method that the Big 12 is literally never good.
I agree with this. Bama is far better than ND, but we saw the difference in the Clemson games without Trev. ND would win easily if all 22 were out.ND would win easily IMO. Losing 1 key player can impact, especially at on field leadership positions like LB, S and OL.
Bama just lost their starting center. Are they down to their 3rd center in your scenario.Thought experiment:

Oooh ... that's a big one. If the #2 guy has ONLY played against Florida in the conference title game, I guess he can stay in. Doesn't change the experiment a ton.Bama just lost their starting center. Are they down to their 3rd center in your scenario.
The thing that still perplexes me about that game was from my recollection the backup QB actually played really well. If the Clemson D showed up at all they would have won that game.I agree with this. Bama is far better than ND, but we saw the difference in the Clemson games without Trev. No. ND wins this scenario. But not a blowout.Does the Crimson Tide second string beat Notre Dame's starters? Is it close? Could ND's starters boat-race Bama's second string?
Another thought experiment I've often run mentally is "What's the worst Power 5 team that Nick Saban (or Dabo Swinney now) could elevate to a national-title contender?" EDIT: I've always assumed that if Saban had stayed in Baton Rouge and were now in his twenty-first year with LSU, they'd have a few more titles.Fun sport when we are realistically discussing if the 30th-40th best players on a team would beat #4 in the country.
Are you talking about right now, or when Saban and Swinney were newer less-established coaches? If Sabo or Swinney were to pack up tomorrow and go to Kentucky, or Vandy, or Indiana, I have zero doubts that those schools would in the national title conversation within a matter of years. The clout and recruiting cache that they were carry would result in immediate recruiting success; by the time they have a team full of "their guys", they're perennially highly-ranked. At the same time though, you could count on one hand the number of coaches who have this level of gravitas (it literally might just be these two plus like Urban Meyer).Another thought experiment I've often run mentally is "What's the worst Power 5 team that Nick Saban (or Dabo Swinney now) could elevate to a national-title contender?" Would it have to be a "sleeping" traditional power like Michigan or Texas? Could you get down to the "used to be" teams like UCLA, Miami-FL, and Nebraska? I'm assuming your Kentuckys and Vanderbilts and Indianas are right out ... but maybe get those squads to back-to-back 10-win regular seasons?
Is a top-three coach enough, or do they need an entire program of a certain caliber as well?
@AllAubarn: Billy Napier makes $880,000 at Louisiana. He likely turned down a $5million+ deal. If that doesn’t tell you about the disfunction from above, I don’t know what will...Report is Billy Napier has turned down an offer from Auburn, and Sark declined an interview with AU, who now turn their focus to Bill Clark.

So, talking out your ###. SNAFU.Using the tried and true method that the Big 12 is literally never good.
I'd say Saban and Swinney now, as opposed to earlier in their careers. Are you talking about right now, or when Saban and Swinney were newer less-established coaches?
Depends.Turning down 5M a year when you make less than 1M is actually quite stupid imo
Betting on himself, for sure ... but Napier will have other offers in the same range.Turning down 5M a year when you make less than 1M is actually quite stupid imo
Maybe! He could also go 3-9 next year and the best offer is from an American conference school.Depends.
If money is not how you determine success or if you don’t feel like you need every last dollar, perhaps you pass.
If that multi-million dollar deal comes with strings attached - such as no control over assistants - maybe you decide the money just isn’t worth it.
Besides, it will always be a coaches market. He’s probably betting that there’s a school that will give him that cash without the strings. And he’d be right.
That’s why it’s called betting on yourself. You can gamble and lose.Maybe! He could also go 3-9 next year and the best offer is from an American conference school.
defensive tackle Tyler Davis, defensive end Justin Foster, linebacker Jamie Skalski and linebacker Mike Jones all missed the game as well. The thing that still perplexes me about that game was from my recollection the backup QB actually played really well. If the Clemson D showed up at all they would have won that game.
Having said that, I still think Bama can win if their backup played as well as the Clemson backup did that day. The 2-deep is as good or better than Notre Dame's, IMO.
One scenario i heard today (definitely not in the loop) is that Kevin steele would have to stay on. If so, auburn admin is epically stupid. It's possible, after being turned down by a sun belt coach earlier today, Auburn has been turned down by a cusa coach.
Seeing reports of a ~$5.2 million buyout. Any FCS schools looking for a coach or DC? Mark Stoops looking for an analyst at Kentucky?not exactly shocking
@RossDellenger: NEWS: #LSU DC Bo Pelini not expected back in 2021, sources tell @SINow, as @mzenitz reports.
Tigers will have many more staff changes, too.
Yet, Notre Dame still got past Clemson's 30 on its first three drives. They averaged a point a drive. ND had some atrocious, timid play calling that really changed the game.defensive tackle Tyler Davis, defensive end Justin Foster, linebacker Jamie Skalski and linebacker Mike Jones all missed the game as well. The thing that still perplexes me about that game was from my recollection the backup QB actually played really well. If Bert Bielema can get $4.2mm x 6 without a conceivable market, I'm sure Napier et al can get similar money to what Auburn is offering with much more realistic expectations behind it.Right so take the money now. Auburn is one of the 15 best jobs in the country, at least top-5 in its own division and top-3 in its own state. Get it while you can. @Aloof
Seems like a good hire but my god is this guy in for a culture change.@Aloof Auburn hiring Boise St. guy Harsin. REACT!
I have an very difficult time imagining it being anything better than mediocre...unless he hires world class SEC recruiters. He can coach, not sure he can get the boys he needs in those parts.Seems like a good hire but my god is this guy in for a culture change.
