I hope they let him walk. Use the 1st and 3rd plus other assets (or picks) to get someone - say Dvorak.  

I think it's hilarious but not really wise for Carolina if Montreal doesn't match. Kotkaniemi has LOTS to work on to ever be a 2nd line centreman. 

Come to think of it, I 🙏 they don't match.

Plus, he basically can't play centre in Carolina, they have Aho, Trochek, Staal, Stepan (and Martin Necas, who already moved to wing) up the middle - so move KK to wing, where he's certainly not worth $6.1M. 

Maybe Trochek leaves after the season and he's the long term 2C behind Aho, but you're putting in 2 years $12.2M to get him there and probably not putting him in a great developmental position for the upcoming year. 

That said, I still think it's hilarious and maybe potentially even worth it - but far far from a sure thing. 

Dom Luczczyzczycybzyn gave his list of analytics comparisons and they range from superstar (Zibanejad, O'Reilly, Barbov... to total bust - Jacob Josefson, Nikita Scherbak etc...)

Hockey Wilderness saying Wild and Kaprizov closing in on 5 years at $9 million AAV, but nothing at all from Russo at the Athletic, so I'm skeptical.

The National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) and the National Hockey League (NHL) announced today that they have concluded an Agreement with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) that confirms a break in the 2021-22 NHL Regular Season Schedule in order to accommodate the participation of NHL Players in the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The Agreement allows for the possibility of a later decision to withdraw in the event evolving Covid conditions are deemed by the NHL/NHLPA to render participation by NHL Players to be impractical or unsafe.

 
Montreal has acquired Christian Dvorak from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for a 2022 first-round pick and a 2024 second-round pick. 

 
Got my wish. Interesting stipulations on which 1st rounder the coyotes get. Offers some protection in the even Montreal or Carolina get any top 10 pick.

I'm happy with the news today. Although I've never been much of a kk fan. For now Montreal is in better shape. Down the road they could regret it. Tough to spend 6 mil on a guy producing as little as kotkaniemi has.

Montreal made the right call here to not match. 
 

Carolina really should have used that money to keep Hamilton, as it seems unlikely spite moves like this will end well for them. 

 
maybe carolina can extend an offer sheet to chris kreider.  i know he’s under contract for 6 more years, but maybe just maybe the nhl allows this and the rangers can lose him for free.

Carolina has been my second favourite team and I hate their offseason. 

Dumping Ned to go sign Frederik Andersen was really curious. I do like Raanta (though he's probably only a lateral move from Mrazek) but I have real questions about how often they'll have two (or one) healthy goalies with that duo. I think the Canes will miss the relatively consistent goaltending of last year.

On D, losing Hamilton was unnecessary. Signing DeAngelo was even more unnecessary. Most unnecessary of all was trading for Brady Skjei and his contract which seems to be the move that started a lot of the moves on D (which included moving Bean and Fleury).

Up front they're obviously very good but Kotkaniemi is an inefficient contract from day one. 

I could be very wrong, but I think they would be in better shape in the short and long term had they just held/resigned Hamilton, Mrazek, Ned, Bean and their 1st round pick rather them replacing them with Raanta, Andersen, Kotkaniemi, DeAngelo. 

The Ethan Bear trade was good though.  Maybe he'll kill DeAngelo before the season starts and they'll be likable again.

I never understood this line of thinking. If the Montreal offer was worse than what Aho thought he ultimately would've settled for with Carolina, then why did he accept it? Yes, he took less than than he would have received as a UFA, but that's true of nearly all RFAs. Between the bonus structure and walking him directly to UFA status, the offer sheet was much more favorable to Aho than comparable players received in similar situation. Was it an easy match for Carolina? Of course. But it was still likely a worse deal for Carolina than if they had been able to squeeze Aho without another team involved.  

 
Canes just seem cheap. Took forever for BrindAmour deal to get done. They’d rather let players walk than go above the value they feel is fair. Aho negotiations probably would have dragged on forever and I think he signed it to get it done faster. There was zero chance Carolina would have not matched so I guess I get why they are mad that Montreal forced their hand. Still far from a bad contract and not sure it’s worth the grudge.

They wanted a 8 year contract.  Aho is a UFA after 5 years now.  Pretty big deal IMO.

Now its 3 years, ouch.

You make great points. Bear killing D is funny.  I agree with you plus Doggie was loved here.  They are analytics driven.  Reason for goalie changes.  I personally think it was too soon to give up on Ned and while he let up some bad goal in the playoffs his GAA was under 2.5,  I believe when pulled in TB series.  Plus he has shown the ability to improve.  I don't think you can ride Mrazek to a cup.  Hamilton and D'Angelo's analytics are supposedly close but you throw out having a great character team which they pimp alot with that signing.  Feels like a step back unless KK and one of the goalies have career years.

The NHL concluded its investigation into allegations that Sharks winger Evander Kane bet on league games and "found no evidence to support" those claims, the league announced in a statement.

"The investigation uncovered no evidence to corroborate Ms. Kane's accusations that Mr. Kane bet or otherwise participated in gambling on NHL games, and no evidence to corroborate the allegations that Mr. Kane 'threw' games or did not put forward his best effort to help the Sharks win games," the NHL said. "To the contrary, the evidence raises doubts about the veracity of the allegations."

 

Will this lessen the strain between Kane and his teammates?

Kevin Kurz, Sharks beat writer: Not right away, no. The ire from his teammates stemmed primarily from Kane's disrespect of team rules, like being routinely late to practices and games and not abiding by the dress code. If Kane is to co-exist with his Sharks teammates this season, he's going to have to fundamentally alter the way he conducts himself.

That said, perhaps — if they haven't already — they can all attempt to hash things out prior to Thursday, the first on-ice session of training camp. Regardless, Kane will likely be on a short leash with the coaching staff and management.

@reporterchris: The #CBJ have decided not to send Zac Rinaldo to AHL Cleveland after he cleared waivers. Rinaldo remains under contract -- so he'll still get paid -- but GM Jarmo Kekalainen doesn't want an unvaccinated player around his organization.

 
Canucks get Hughes and Petterson signed. Seemed like fair deals. Quite a bit less $ for Petterson than Kaprizov, which is interesting.

 
So Robin Lehner took to Twitter and is calling for Alain Vigneault to be fired for....something. Not sure if he is saying AV handed out drugs or he was too demanding on players (Nolan Patrick is now Lehner teammate). For good measure, he challenges the league.
