Conversely, definitely on the Moo State bandwagon. Just one NHL pick (Nathan Smith, who is now Yotes property after the deadline trade), but just a great team structure and buy-in, if you can even get the puck anywhere near their Hobey finalist Dryden McKay. (And it took an awful giveaway and a 2-on-0 to get even one by him).

More importantly, it was great to see the Garden banged out and about 80 percent out-of-town fans, in my estimation. Definitely a down year for the east this year - UMass and Quinnipiac were the two best teams, and UMass got worked pretty good by both Michigan and Moo State during the regular season. (UMass and the Gophers were pretty even, to my admittedly biased eyes.)

Whatever happened to @ffldrew ... the Pioneers fan I met in Buffalo three years ago? If you're still here, come find me in Boston tomorrow.

love espn+ signing hockey east next year.  they already have ecac and I get decent access to big10 and nchc already.  better college hockey coverage than ever before.

 
God, the Blues suck 5v5. I’m not sure I’ve seen a team suck so bad at 5v5 and keep winning. Maybe that Colorado team that Patrick Roy took to the playoffs. Gonna be fun beating Brasky in the 1st round like this. Watch out ‘Lanche!

Levi carried that team.  McKay sat behind a great team in a weak conference.  when you win the Hobey for 38 wins you might as well put the whole team on the trophy.

Yes, I realize he was top 10 but he was not a top three finalist. I don’t know what the answer is. One guy has a great save percentage the other guy has the most wins in history and a better GAA.

Wins and GAA are much more reliant on the overall team than the individual. Hobey Baker also seems to favor older players.

You should weight stats appropriately to determine who the best player is. Has nothing to with penalizing him. Levi was better and that’s why he won the best goalie award. It’s very dumb/inconsistent to say Levi was the best goalie but another goalie was the best player. 
 

not a big deal as both players had great years but what Levi did was incredible.

Under your scenario, there is virtually nothing McKay could’ve done to win. He can’t somehow make more saves if his team doesn’t give up the same amount of shots. I’m definitely not taking anything away from Levi and I certainly understand it’s stupid to have two winners.

Well yeah. Surrounding players matter in awards. This is not new or unique to college hockey.

Nah, 3 on 3 is where the Blues really suck, although it worked out last night!  I was there and the atmosphere was incredible.  Will be a fun 1st round series if it does end up Blues/Wild. 

 
in all seriousness McKay played fine but DU took that game over in the 3rd after having nothing most of the first 40.  great game, two solid teams.  Mankato will break through eventually.

 
Player safety might be looking at this

@Dejan_Kovacevic: At end of period, Evgeni Malkin with a two-hander to the midsection of Mark Borowiecki, then the shaft of his stick into Borowiecki's mouth ... resulting in a big mess, including spit-out teeth, I think. Yikes.

 
I saw some numbers recently that showed that Levi was 1-5 vs. NCAA tournament teams (the one win being Harvard in the Beanpot), and 6-6 over the second half of the season. Not sure his GAA/SP splits, but they definitely were worse than his yearlong numbers. As awkward as it is from an optics standpoint, I'm good with both of them getting some accolades for what they did this season.

As for last night, I don't know what Carle said/adjusted before the third period, but DU was a totally different team after Moo State smothered them for two periods. Odd-man rushes galore when they couldn't even get cleanly through the neutral zone for two periods. You just got the sense that Minnesota State let them hang around too long with some of the chances they missed (including the shot off the crossbar that spun into the crowd about 6 inches out of my reach and landed two rows back). Chrona was the different the first two periods.

 
Man the Kings really stunk it up yesterday after the first 10 minutes.  Give up 6 unanswered goals after being up 3-0.  Injuries on the back end are starting to take a toll and I don't think they will hang on to a playoff spot.  They were a year or two ahead of schedule so playoffs this year would have been a surprise anyway.

still missing Doughty obviously but Roy just came back.  healthier than they've been for a while.

Wild are a juggernaut, not much you can do.  luckily the Blackhawks are on deck, easy 2 points.

Wild may be a juggernaut but having a 3 goal lead shouldn't be a loss regardless of who you are playing.  Another key guy missing is Mikey Anderson.  He was playing really well when he went down.  That coupled with Doughty has been a big hit to the defense.  Durzi's play has also slipped a bit on the defensive side.  He may be tiring with how much load he has had to carry with all the injuries.

Trent Frederic tries to run Tarasenko after a whistle and gets dropped instead. Then gets sent to the box for 2. Jack Edwards left speechless. Torey Krug scores on the PP. I love when the puck doesn’t lie.

I don't really see them catching Nashville or Dallas in the WC race, but Edmonton-Vegas as the 2-3 matchup in the Pacific would be really interesting (and probably more realistic, as Rud mentioned above).

 
Since this is now the quasi-college hockey thread ... Jerry York announced his retirement today from BC. 50 years of coaching, more than 1,100 wins. Unreal career.

Also, the BC and BU jobs both being open at the same time is pretty wild.

Don't write the Kings of just yet.  They have an easy schedule to close out.  I don't think they have any playoff teams left.

I don't think Toews sticks around based on some of his comments, and I wouldn't be surprised if Kane also left. Both are probably are going to want to have a legit shot at a cup before they retire and the Hawks are definitely not going to be that.

The other factor in the 3-5 years, is heavily assuming Davidson is competent. I'm not sold on him yet.

If you grew up in the late '70s and early '80s, like I did ... the Islanders were an incredible juggernaut built through patience and great decision-making. Potvin, Gillies, Trottier, Billy Smith, Nystrom, etc. etc. Bossy might be the best pure goal scorer I've ever seen in the NHL.

Nine straight 50+ goal seasons ... I don't think that will ever be matched. (Nor will the Isles' 19 straight playoff series victories.) I can only imagine what would have happened if his back hadn't given out at such a relatively young age. He and Bobby Orr are probably two of the biggest "what-ifs" from an injury standpoint, and I'm glad I got the see both of them in their prime.

Pour one out for a legend.

 
Tampa has struggled lately, but still clinched a playoff spot despite Killorn having not one, but 2 goals called back for offsides, one of which was in overtime! That’s some rotten luck for him.

 
Been watching the NHL for almost 50 years, and all I can ever think about is, "man, when is Tampa (and Harvard-educated Alex Killorn) ever going to catch a break?" 😜

Oh they don’t need breaks, per se, but they do have to try and make it fair for the lesser teams(see: any other NHL team). That’ll catch up to them at some point, but it’s been fun watching them learn from their mistakes in 2019, winning a Cup in isolation thousands of miles from home, then running it back and doing it again less than 11 months later.

 
@colin_dunlap: I’m told Tristan Jarry is being evaluated for a foot injury - and there is a real fear he could have a broken bone in his foot.
