Now that teams are staying away from Doug Marrone in droves, I wonder if anybody in the national media will retract their statements about he's the second coming of Vince Lombardi and how the Bills were idiots to let him get away. I'm sure they'll get on that any day now.

Rumored to have an interview with the Bears. I still don't think he's getting a HC job. If he does, it will be one of the last ones and out of desperation. If that does happen, expect to see a ton of tweets from Schefter and Mort about how "league sources" tell them it's a total steal and that whatever team it is is now poised for success.

All have star players with nice foundations on at least one side of the ball.

I think two of those jobs go to John Fox and Dan Quinn.

You also have Teryl Austin getting a second interview in Atlanta. (which surprised me)

I just don't think Marrone has the clout to pull one of these out and sort of don't think he has the reputation as a great offensive mind to be hired in one of the final OC openings. I doubt he has regrets for leaving the Bills but there is a part of me that sort of hopes he interviews for every HC and OC opening available and doesn't get hired at any.

Darrell Bevell will likely get one of those spots too.

I'm not all that thrilled about Gailey going to NY. I have a lot of respect for him as an OC. He had a lot of flaws as HC, but there was no question that he made that offense much better than it probably should have been.

Same here. I was looking forward to the Jets hiring Marrone first of all because the coach-swapping aspect would be funny, but also because Marrone just isn't very good. Sadly, the Jets came to their senses and seem to be putting together a pretty decent staff. Gailey isn't perfect, but he's certainly a competent OC.

Bowles and Gailey are great hires for the Jets.

He's the Big Clown Character that he displays during press conferences like he did today at OBD.

And then there's the normal Rex.

I watched the presser and then an hour later he was interviewed on the Rich Eisen radio show and his personality was so much more calm and cool - without the dog and pony show of hyperbole.

It's not up on the Eisen show page yet, but the one thing he said that was great when addressing the QB situation.

"It's not ideal".

Not an earth shattering statement, but he was much more transparent in the interview as opposed to the "gung ho" silliness of some of his press conf. comments.

His focus was not balanced...far too defensively-minded. If you're going to operate like that you damn well better have an incredible OC running the show. As a true HC who should be in charge of the entire team, Rex did not do a great job. Like i said, I am of the opinion that he is a near-perfect DC, with a lot to learn about the "CEO" durties that go along w/being a head coach. The buffalo situation is not ideal, since your team also has glaring QB problems. I was surprised at the hire, but Rex is prideful. I've had mixed feelings about the Ryan hire as a non-Bills fan who lives outside Buffalo, is surrounded by family and friends who are Bills fans, and is exposed to Buffalo news/radio/ etc constantly.

I acknowledge his defensive credentials, can't dispute that. I've always kind of liked the guy as I've found him to be funny and entertaining.

Still, at a big picture level it just doesn't seem to make much sense and strikes me as kind of a "celebrity" hire. Almost as if the goal was more to bring more national visibility to the organization that has been lacking since the Marv years than to address targeted deficiencies. It just didn't make a lot of sense-they already had a great defense and a highly respected-and effective-DC. Why tinker with that? And now they are changing schemes. Why not go after someone with the offensive credentials?

I know that locally the Ryan hiring is very popular and my Bills fan friends are psyched about it. Even there though, I almost sense a little bit of "NOW we've got some credibility as an organization".

It's too bad Marrone turned out to be such a disappointment on at least a few levels (yeah I know they won 9 games) because I suspect it will be a long time before they go back to the college ranks again.

Hope I'm completely wrong because it's kind of cool around here when the Bills are winning and even the bandwagon fans are excited. I also have a significant bias against retread coaches. I've never understood how a lot of these coaches keep getting recycled from team to team (and I'm not necessarily talking about Ryan per se, but in general).

That criticism of Roman is so dumb. Basically he is getting a bad rap over about 3 plays. And in all of them, the playcall was fine, the QB just didn't come through. Sorry, but if a WR is open and the QB misses him, that's on the QB, not the coach. And if Crabtree drops a TD, that's not on the coach. Or if the play call is right but the coach has to call a timeout before you get delay of game because the coach insists that the playcalling go through him, that's not the OC's fault.Oh, and last year, SF receivers dropped 34 passes. That was 4th most in the league. Again, not the coach's fault.

Yep. Especially in NY, where the media will pile on every single player, especially a rookie QB, I think Rex took on a certain persona to shield Sanchez and others from a lot of criticism, and he was pretty successful at it. The stories were mostly about (1) him and (2) Revis, and that's a big part of why a lot of reporters never pointed out just how awful Sanchez was. I think that's one of the many reasons players love him: he'll heap praise on his best players and try to take the heat off of the bad ones.

49ers off the board. Fox to Chicago seems like it'll happen. Quinn to Atlanta also seems like it will happen. Denver said it was between JDR and Gase... jdr gone so Gase is the guy. Seems like everything fell into place fairly nicely. Marrone on the outside looking in must be pretty rewarding for you guys. Wonder if he goes back to college or takes a coordinator job.

With regards to running backs, I don't think anybody really knows. Dixon said that he was happy to be reunited with Roman, but I personally wouldn't read anything into that. We don't know if Spiller will be back next year (probably not) and Jackson has clearly lost a couple steps IMO though it's hard to tell since the blocking has gotten so much worse the past couple of years.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's a better than 50% chance that our leading rusher for next year isn't on our roster yet.

There's no way this isn't an upgrade for Watkins. The way he was used last year bordered on professional malpractice.

On the radio this morning, Rex said one of his big regrets from his time with the Jets was moving away from what was successful with the offense - the ground and pound - and trying to be something they did not have the personnel to be - a balanced/passing offense.

He said he has the defense in Buffalo and that they "don't have anything close to Tom Brady at QB".

I'd expect a heavy run based offense and the choice of Greg Roman for OC, who comes from one of the few teams in the league that ran more than they passed, says that as well.

So many changes so it's a complete guessing game, but it's hard to get excited for any Bills skill position players (assuming you're talking about fantasy) until they get the QB position figured out.

"Unresolved" is putting it nicely. With Kyle Orton calling it quits, the only quarterbacks on the Bills' roster right now are E.J. Manuel and Jeff Tuel. It's an even worse situation than what Ryan dealt with for most of his tenure with the Jets. Speaking of that tenure, Rex said that free agent Mark Sanchez will "certainly" be under consideration as an addition. The regime change won't save Manuel.

Have to agree with Ivan here.

Spiller will be gone, which might not be a bad thing depending on where he lands. The only thing that may keep him here is that he will be the decent FA backs and draft class. And of course the general trend of RBs dipping in value. Plus, he will be 28 next year and has injury issues his whole career. His offers might might be low enough that the Bills are will to match and he decides to stay. They was some rumours about AZ showing interest though.

Jackson is, IMO, going into his last season. I love Freddie but a human body can only take so much abuse. I think he will be perfect as a reliever this. Let him come in for a bit with fresh legs for a bit then get back to the starter.

Dixon and Brown are both 3rd string guys. Utility backs. They shouldn't be anything more. Brown could be a late bloomer and is still young but as of now he, at best, is strictly a COP back.

I too think the Bills starting RB next year isn't currently on the team. I think they pick up a back out of FA. Here's a list of this years free agent backs:

I am a little worried about Roman as the OC for Watkins. I'm not sold that he got the most out of his WRs but I don't see how it could be worse than Marrone last year so I still think it's an upgrade. Honestly, I don't think these coaching moves would really impact my fantasy outlook on Watkins. Maybe a slight up tic because of better use but there's still no solid QB option and it seems this team is going to be even more run heavy.

I'm fine with it. Sanchez is as good as anyone else we'd get in free agency. He's also still only 28 years old. He'll battle out EJ in camp and I think Sanchez will win that - but you never know. And as we've said before, I'd like them to spend a mid range pick on a QB. I'm sure there's someone out there that's worth a flyer. Get rid of Tuel time.

We're almost certainly going to sign a QB and draft a QB this season. As funny as Sanchez is, he's no worse than our other FA options. If EJ can't beat this guy out, well, you know.

Is he coachable? I suspect you can coach a quick read and quick release.....but can you coach accuracy? Is it in how you throw? Or how the ball comes off your hand? I don't know. I've always thought current guys like Brees, Brady and Rodgers - have a God given talent for accuracy. And from what I saw in his limited play, EJ's accuracy was like throwing darts in the dark and crossing your fingers for the best result.

Getting ahead of ourselves, but I just hope it would be a fair competition. I could see Rex going with Sanchez even if EJ is somewhat less bad.

Not true -- his stats were horrible because he was dealing with hip injuries the whole season, as well as OL injury issues.

Not true -- his stats were horrible because he was dealing with hip injuries the whole season, as well as OL injury issues.

Possibly. There's no way to know that the injury was definitely the cause. I think it's just as likely he had lost as step as it is that it was all due to injury.

Brett Hundley is currently projected as a 2nd round pick and the 3rd QB in the draft.

after that, the pickings get very slim. Garrett Grayson from Colorado State might be a possibility.

Why bother with Ray Rice when -

1. There's better options in free agency. Mark Ingram comes to mind.

2. This is supposedly a RB-rich draft, and following recent drafts, a starting RB can be had in the second or third round.

ETA: 2015 is supposed to be a DL-rich draft as well, which suits the Bills just fine if teams spend a lot of picks on d-linemen instead of QB or RB.
