2021 Buffalo Bills - Same as it ever was*** (2 Viewers)

Doug Marrone canceled his HC interview with the Broncos until he sees what happens with Kubiak.

So now he's opting out even BEFORE he has the job.

Yuck. Reports are the Bills are bringing in former Bears OC Eric Kromer to be their OL coach.

No thanks. That's the dude that was anonymously ripping Cutler to the media. No way players can ever trust that dude again. Keep him out of here.

I know this is a RB-rich draft, but Ray Rice could add some real punch to the offense.
Why go with a guy that has tons of baggage when they could resign Spiller who has as much upside as Rice (probably more at this stage of their careers) and has always been a first class guy off the field?

Oof. Bad news. But Rex is a guy about giving guys a second chance... I'm sure that's how he'll spin it here. And it sounds like Kromer owned up to the mistake before he left Chicago, so maybe everyone can move on (?).

so, I live in chicago and some of my buddies were wondering if maybe buffalo would be a possible trade partner for cutler cuz they naturally want to get rid of him.

how would you guys feel about that trade?

One last Marrone note for the night: He was interviewed for the Jacksonville OC position. Jacksonville then brought in Nate Hackett to interview for the same position.

That can NOT be good for Marrone, right?

I don't think it's happening with the hire of John Fox... I've heard it spun that Fox is the guy to work with/fix Cutler instead of trying to blow the whole thing up. It makes sense given Cutler's contract and all of the veterans on that team (i.e., they are in win-now mode).

isnt Fox a fix the defense kind of guy? Did Chicago hire an OC yet??

Wasn't the Bears' o-line one of the Cutler era problem spots?

Rex has just hired David Lee (no Roth) to be the Bills new QB coach, who we must imagine will be tasked with developing E.J. Manuel into passable shape.

Lee is a strong hire, noted most recently for his incredible work with Ryan Fitzpatrick during his final year in Buffalo, and then his outstanding work the last couple years with Geno Smith in NY.

can you imagine if the jets had stumbled across tom brady?

chip kelly, who everyone lauds as some kind of transcendental genius, just went 5-4 and missed the playoffs with sanchez.

ryan took him to 2 afccg as a wildcard in a division with the most dominant team in football.

He didn't need Tom Brady. Give him a very good QB like Big Ben and the Jets probably would have made Belichick retire by now.

Lal is even worse than Lee. Hopefully Sammy Watkins isn't a good listener.

Jets D was a bit better than philly's. Regardless, there's too many other pieces to make any logical conclusions.

yeah, and why was that?

Wouldn't like that Rex seems to want to bring every one of his retreads with him.
then you don't like the rex hire

if they bring in rex why wouldn't they bring in his coaching staff?

for that matter, roman could be considered one of his 'retreads' as they were on the same ravens team
Jets weren't exactly a wrecking ball. Hard to fire guys but easy to just not rehire them. Jets had the crappiest QB and WRs in the league so let's hire the guys who coached them.

Seriously, why does the guy who got to coach Peyton Manning get HC interviews while the guy stuck with coaching Geno Smith is somehow a bum? Ever consider the possibility that Geno Smith just sucks and no amount of coaching would cover for it?

Name a QB he's coached who hasn't sucked

How many coaches out there have taken a bad, mediocre, or even average QB and made them really good? How many can you actually name? How many have done it with more than one QB (thus demonstrating that it was them and not just luck/the QB himself)?

Geep Chryst. Lee's claim to fame is a formation that takes the QB completely out of the equation.

They've all sucked. That's my point. The guy has been stuck with QBs who just aren't any good.

Mostly better players.

The Jets had some talent on their D for sure during those years, but the second time around where the Jets beat Manning and Brady in consecutive weeks to get to the AFC Championship games, it was almost entirely due to Rex' schemes that totally frustrated two of the best QBs of all time. He threw them both a tremendous curve ball, changing up his defensive schemes entirely from what he was doing all season and had both of them looking as frustrated as I have ever seen them.

You can call Rex a lot of things, and he surely has some flaws as a HC, but the guy has one of the best minds in the league when it comes to the defensive side of the ball.

Sammy Watkins-WR Bills

According to sources in the Bills' draft room, former Buffalo head coach Doug Marrone clearly was not happy with the trade for Sammy Watkins on Draft Day. Marrone was not in favor of Buffalo surrendering a future first-round pick to the Browns in a trade that did not involve a quarterback, sources said.

This is one of the big reasons why Marrone wanted to get out of Buffalo. He'll end up coaching for another NFL team this upcoming season.

It's not clear at all that Marrone will be coaching for anybody this season. Houston might create a pity position for him, but that doesn't really count.

He was kinda right. Having a stud WR and no QB is a little pointless.

Well they had just drafted a QB the season before. Assuming they believed in him, wouldn't giving him the weapons to succeed make sense?

Guess it depends how much you believe in him. Sounds like the coach didn't.

No, that's not what it sounds like at all. Marrone was EJ's #1 fan. This is revisionist history at best.Again, why are we discussing something from weeks ago as if it's a new revelation? Was covered in this thread when it came out.
