2021 Buffalo Bills - Same as it ever was*** (3 Viewers)

Just listened to that interview after I read your post. The "getting loose" thing was his plan for EJ but he also stated that Fitz and Gino had problems because they "got loose" so it's a little odd. It's an off the cuff interview so I won't scrutinize the wording too much. I probably wouldn't have even noticed it if I didn't read your post first but still.

Right after that the auto play went to Rex's interview at the Senior Bowl. When I heard "Here with Bills head coach Rex Ryan" and hearing him talk about "his" team, it was just so weird. I guess all the puzzle pieces finally came together in my head. And it's weird! Anyone feel like this?

NFL.com has an article about Mario saying he's looking forward to going back to the Ryan hybrid 3-4 defense, and embraces moving back to a rush OLB.

It made me wonder (again) about the LB corp when they play 3-4 next season. Kiko and Brown at ILB? I never realized Preston Brown was 251lbs (official weight, anyway). That's big enough for a 3-4 ILB, right?

So Bradham-Kiko-Brown-Mario when they go 3-4, and then have Kiko switch over to OLB when Mario goes to LDE in the 4-3? Or would they keep Kiko at OLB the whole time? Bradham only weights 240. I'm not sure he would man an ILB spot...

Bradham can't play a traditional 3-4 OLB spot. He's fighting with Brown and Alonso for ILB snaps imo.

Are there any decent FA qBs for the Bills to pickup? Watkins and Woods could be a very good duo if they had a real QB

Why? Lack of speed? He had 8 PDs this year and over 100 tackles, which makes me think he can play coverage and the run at least.

Lack of size/strength. Would get engulfed by OTs. Can't hold the edge against the run or rush the passer.

3-4 OLBs are more like DEs than LBs a lot of times. Hughes would be perfect and a big loss in this new scheme.

So really he's fighting with Brown to start. I highly doubt Kiko isn't starting week 1.

good breakdown of what to expect from the Bills defense under Ryan. I shared this earlier, but it likely got lost.
I still think it's possible that the Bills stick with a 4-3. The Ravens actually ran a 4-3 when Ryan was there. He's on record as saying he doesn't care what the scheme is. And Thurman said today "The scheme is whatever the talent dictates. It's whatever our guys do best. The Bills on defense did well enough to kill us twice last year." Also said that he and Rex are in lock step in their thinking.

As far as I know, Rex has never said he's only a 3-4 guy.

Maybe he is and maybe that's the route that he does take, but I'm not sure why everyone assumes that has to be the case.

Anyone here catch any TB games last year? Word is Mike Glennon could be had for a 4th or 5th round pick. His numbers look good for a young QB. What's the story with his play?

The Bills are already without their 1st and 4th round picks. I doubt they will be trading picks for a QB unless they're pretty sure he'll be their starter.

Hackett pulled out of race for Rams OC job and appears set to become QB coach in Jacksonville.

So, Marrone and Hackett are both on the staff in Jacksonville but neither are the offensive coordinator?

:oldunsure:

Schadenfreude. :lmao:
Assistant to the assistant head coach?

I'm still disappointed that we won't get to watch Marrone coach the Jets. That pairing had disaster written all over it.
Every see Thor 2?

Was really hoping Brady would consider retirement after this championship. You can't deny he's incredible and one of the best. Once he leaves the whole AFC opens up. In a couple years Brady and Manning will be gone and the AFC will have a different feel to it.

Except he works out like a fiend and says he wants to play well into his forties. Not sure Brady will be gone as soon as we'd hope.

There's a pic out there of a shirtless Rex getting his infamous tattoo shaded blue.

I'd provide a link but I don't want to get banned for posting gay grandpa porn.

The potential of the Bills opening the season at Foxboro on primetime Thursday night with Rex prowling the sidelines has me a little giddy.

It will be lucks world then
Wilson too, if Seattle ever gets him some real WRs. I can't recall seeing someone throw a more perfectly placed deep ball than Wilson. The guy can hurl it 30+ yards in a high arc so it lands back shoulder out of reach of any DB over and over, almost effortlessly. If he had even Brady's weapons we'd be talking about him and Luck for the next fifteen years.

Imagine Wilson with Buffalo's WR corps. It's enough to make you cry.

ETA: There's this certain MVP who's fairly young as well. Rodgers isn't even 30, right? Plus he's banging Olivia Munn, which takes at least 3 years off any soul.

Luck, Wilson, Rodgers, etc. don't play in the Bills division. Let's hope the Bills figure out a way to beat the Pats before we start worrying about NFC opponents blocking their path to a championship.

I think they were sticking to the AFC.

That being said, who needs Wilson when his ~4th best receiver is still on the board?

Fair enough. Of all the post-Brady opponents in the division, Miami has me most worried. Maybe because they're the only one with a young QB with any moxie.

ETA: but a future decade returning to the Bills vs. Dolphins rivalry would be awesome.

Where'd you see this?
Just that the Pats will open the season at home on Thursday Night - and the Bills play there.

Just a potential season opener.
The Bills have no business being in the season opener except the Pats' 2015 home schedule is pretty weak:

Buffalo, Miami, NY Jets, Jacksonville, Tennessee, Philadelphia, Washington, Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh or Buffalo makes the most sense. And with Rex on board, Buffalo seems like the best TV matchup.

I think Pittsburgh is the pick for that slot. Buffalo doesn't have the national appeal that the Steelers do. Plus, they can't hype up a possible EJ Manuel/Brady matchup.

Eagles could be possible as well. Pretty slim pickings overall though. AFC East teams have some favorable schedules coming up.

I'm terrified this might actually happen. He's already King Dink&Dunk anyway so why can't he do that at 42?

I'm actually worried the Jets are going to get Mariota or Winston. Hoping someone jumps ahead of them to take the one that doesn't go to Tampa.

They should trade for Kirk Cousins. Doubt he'd be worse than Orton or Manuel right?
Of all the options Cousins is the guy I like the most. I know he had some horrific games but he had enough really good moments to think there is something there.
Cousins regressed under Gruden. However, ALL the Redskin QB's regressed under Gruden. You would have to hope Gruden was messing up Cousins, because he was definitely awful at times last year.

Mallett is FA as far as I know - don't know much about him though. He got injured after a few games in HOU IIRC
Houston is in the same boat as Buffalo. I think they will re-sign Mallett to an incentive laden contract. He is very familiar with the offense as it is similar to New England's. Going to Buffalo, he would have to learn a new offense.

Damn, that's hefty. I would rather that than sign him to a long term extension though. He just seems like the type of guy that wouldn't be as good after his big pay day.

Looks like franchise tag for Hughes would cost $14.7MM as a DE. Steep. 2nd most expensive position in football.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/writer/jason-la-canfora/25061169/franchise-tag-an-increasingly-expensive-proposition-in-the-nfl
Assuming we actually treat the salary cap as a real budget constraint, I'd rather spend that money on our offensive line and maybe QB instead. The defense is going to be solid without Hughes if it comes to that, though I'd love to have him back. I don't want to trade Hughes for Revis, for example.

Would it be terrible to let Hughes walk, and replace him with Manny Lawson for a year at 4-3 edge rusher and Stefan Charles (whom I really like) at 3-4 DE?

Then, as Ivan said, throw that money at the OL, such as signing Iupati, or a vet QB?

Oh boy, sounds like the Bills are not only bringing Richie Incognito for a visit and physical, but that it's pretty much a done deal already. Ugh.

Just came to post this.

ARE F@@#ING KIDDING ME?

This guy has been absolute ##### everywhere he's been - long before he blew up an entire Dolphins locker room. What the hell is Roman/Ryan/Whaley thinking?

They aren't that desperate. There's better (more talented, less personality-challenged) options out there, and they still have the draft.

### #### it.

Incognito got a slightly raw deal in Miami, but he's gotten dumped from every team he's ever been on despite being a pretty good player. That speaks volumes about the kind of guy he is in the locker room. Not happy with this signing.

I've read that Incognito has been in counseling or rehab or some sort of treatment. Hopefully he's a changed man. If not, well, then it really sucks.

Eric Wood previously sort of defended Incognito, so maybe it won't be too bad.

If he has changed and isn't a locker room cancer, then he would actually be an upgrade you would think. He's getting older and has been out of the league for a year, but he was the 14th ranked Guard in 2013 when he got suspended and was a Pro Bowler in 2012.

I can't imagine Incognito is an expensive signing. Not like it would be hard to cut him if he gets out line.

Still not the kind of guy I want on my team, but that's the NFL for you.
