2021 Buffalo Bills - Same as it ever was*** (2 Viewers)

Darby has been fantastic. It's hard to believe with how badly he played in the preseason, but he has been lights out during the season. He looks like a total steal for the Bills.
I seriously don't understand how he went from awful in the preseason to total stud for the first four weeks of this season. I know he was on an island and everything, but he's been absolutely blanketing guys -- not sure how he got lit up so badly earlier. Regardless, I'm happy.
knock on wood.

On a side note with McCoy likely out until 11/8 Miami game, when do you think we see Sammy at the earliest/latest.

Is he likely out until the bye as well? Very curious on that calf.

I was under the impression that Watkins was a just 1 week thing. He was sorely missed, moreso than McCoy IMO.
Updated today from Dr.Bramel

Sammy Watkins remains in the rehab and recovery phase with a calf injury. We've seen how difficult it is for players to recover quickly and effectively from calf strains. It's likely the Bills will continue to bring Watkins back slowly. His absence could easily last another 2-3 weeks.

Two more weeks, would be the London game, or they could hold him out another and get extra rest with the bye.

I think both will be out till 11/8

I'm seeing a lot of "woe is me" about the defense and I'm not sure it's justified. Penalties are an issue, for sure. The Giants had 303 yards of offense and converted 3/15 on third down. Eli got rid of the ball quickly and efficiently, negating the Bills pass rush, but it's not like he absolutely lit them up all day. The Giants put together one very nice drive (10 plays, 76 yards to go up 16-3 in the 2nd quarter), got the benefit of some abysmal Bills tackling on the Rashad Jennings 51-yard TD, and their other TD drive was a drive start at the Bills 32 after an INT.

Frankly, the offense let the team down yesterday. Bills first half drives:

3-and-out - punt

3-and-out - punt

5 plays, 15 yards - FG (1 first down)

1 play - interception

3-and-out - punt

3-and-out - punt

6 plays, 21 yards - punt (1 first down)

3-and-out - punt

That's just an incredibly poor half of offensive football.
After further review I think this is probably right. Also one of those TD drives extended by penalty on FG. A penalty which the refs apparently go out of their way to avoid except when it involves the Bills. Basically 18pts by terrible calls.

Karlos has a concussion Whaley just said he reported it late to the staff late Monday night. Ridiculous. Hinted at hoping he's cleared by Friday. Trying out backs today, likely Bryce Brown a possability.

Whaley hinted at McCoy being long term. Seemed like they are going to see what Watkins is like this week, but thinking more so for next week, is at least how I understood it. Said it wasn't a Victor Cruz calf injury.

Talked about wanting to not have his young QB pass 40 times a game and scouting.

This season has turned kind of ugly really fast. We're to the point where they're bringing in Trent Richardson for a workout
Is that for real? How do they not just bring Bryce Brown back. He's a fine stopgap in a pinch, can catch a little bit, presumably knows the offense.

The weekly reports from the stands and parking lot is really embarrassing. Doesn't anyone else in actually living in Western NY actually feel this way?
I'm just kinda surprised it's being picked up nationally now. Seems like it started last year with the Kiko Alonso jersey #######. I had season tickets from 2003-2009 and 2015-present and have been to at least 3-4 games per year since about 2000, and the atmosphere seems pretty much the same as it has always been. Maybe it's just the advent of social media?

Exactly it, everyone has multiple different outlets to share their pictures.

Jordan Gay cut - Signed Billy Cundiff who can handle kick off's - The writing could be on the wall for Carpenter as it should.

Denarious Moore signed who can handle PR duties as well and can offer more than Thigpen was at the WR position. I did feel comforable with Thigpen returning punts. He actually caught the ball unlike McKelvin. I guess catching a few punts this year inside his own eight yard line did him in.

Aaron Williams practiced - not sure what capacity.

Miller was limited.

Watkins didn't practice.

Obviously no McCoy

Boobie Dixon will start "if" Karlos is unable to go.

Who will lead the Bills in rushing if Karlos can't play? - Boobie, Tyrod, Wood, Harvin

Lots of Twitter reports that Aaron Williams will be playing this week. That's very good news. Rambo and Duke Williams have been very sub-par

It was just a few weeks ago that we had more running backs than we could roster. How did we get to this point so fast?
Just so the Fred Jackson lovers have something to complain about. Who is also, no shocker... hurt again.
who isn't a Fred Jackson lover?

Does Bryce Brown prefer to stay home or something? Not sure why he wasn't signed already.

I like him, but it was the right move to get rid of Fred. In hindsight the rest of our RB's are all hurt, but so is Fred in Seattle.

It says something that Bryce Brown isn't here after all or was even claimed right away. Are teams working him out? Boom Herron was getting worked out by more teams the last 2-3 weeks.

Boobie, Cierre and Boom Herron will be a weird backfield if that's the case Sunday.

Hoping Karlos is ok to go.

Bryce Brown worked out with the Colts earlier this week. Also with the Jets last week I believe.

Bills twitter account tweeted... Sources say... Sammy Watkins smiling at practice today.

Not sure to what extent he's practicing or if it's a twitter troll job, but he's out there.

PFF absolutely loves Darby. They have him listed as the frontrunner for Defensive ROY and on their All-Pro team after 4 weeks. Obviously it's a very long season and plenty of time for a dropoff, but what an encouraging start for his career....for a guy that many pundits called a reach.

All the hand wringing by some about not having a first round pick and the Bills come away with Darby, Karlos and Miller. His first round picks may be somewhat questionable so far, but Whaley has been hitting the rest of his drafts out of the park.

not crazy about last year's 2nd rounder but everybody misses sometimes.

2014:

Watkins

Kouandjio

P.Brown

Cockrell

Richardson

R.Johnson

Henderson

3 starters out of this group, and Cockrell looked pretty good for the Steelers so might make a quality reserve at least. I also think Randell Johnson is a nice depth LB who could develop into a bigger role at some point.

I'll spare everyone the "offense needs to be better" post, since that goes w/out saying. Can we just bank that one and move on? Special thanks to Whisenhunt & T-Mobile.

For the 5th time in 6 weeks Vegas has Bills a virtual pick 'em. I think an opponent coming off a Seattle game as opposed to extra rest for once is a plus. I sorta like our chances if Sammy is back which by most accounts he should be.

Tyrod saved the win this week with his legs. With the junior varsity RB crew the Bills fielded, they really couldn't do anything the entire game. TMobile had a huge 26 yard scramble for an important 1st down & then a beautiful TD run. He was their most explosive ball carrier today. Those runs also help set up the game wining TD pass to Hogan.

From the looks of the first 3 quarters, this team desperately needs Sammy Watkins, Shady McCoy, & Karlos Williams back. Without Watkins, the other WRs are having a lot of trouble getting open. Sammy draws so much attention & keeps the CB1 and safeties occupied .

McCoy & Williams speak for themselves : the rushing game was pitiful with Dixon and Heron. I really hope Shady gets bavk to 100% sooner rather then later so they can actually get production from their RB & help open up passing game

PFF ranking of top corners in the league through 5 weeks so far:

1. Josh Norman, CAR

2. Ronald Darby, BUF

3. Stephon Gilmore, BUF

4. Tyrann Mathieu, AZ

5. Chris Harris, DEN

6. Adam Jones, CIN

7. Patrick Robinson, SD

8. Desmond Trufant, ATL

9. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, NYG

10. Delvin Breaux, NO

Classic Bills. Just enough hope and excitement with Tyrod Taylor and then....BOOM...sprained MCL and may miss multiple weeks.

Here's hoping that Manuel looks as good in his place as he looked during the preseason.

Was only a matter of time. QBs, especially mobile QBs, miss games....hopefully EJ can hold down the fort. I'd be okay with 4-3 and a fresh Taylor coming off of the bye into the 3 straight division games.

Taylor was clutch, but it's not like the offense was a well oiled machine with him out there the past couple weeks. Hopefully they get Sammy and Karlos back this week.

I think most of us were feeling pretty good about John Miller, but he's not playing very well yet.

http://bills.buffalonews.com/2015/10/13/john-miller-struggles-marcell-dareus-shines-in-pffs-grading-for-week-five/

Miller, the team's rookie right guard out of Louisville, allowed three pressures of quarterback Tyrod Taylor, according to advanced statistics website Pro Football Focus, which grades every play of every NFL game. Miller's pass-blocking efficiency score, which is determined by a weighted formula that combines sacks, hits and hurries, was 91.3 -- 48th out of 51 guards scored in Week Five. For the season, Miller ranks 76th out of 77 graded guards with a score of 90.1.

Conversely, defensive tackle Marcell Dareus had the Bills' highest overall grade, particularly impressing against the run. He had three run stops on 22 snaps, and generally was disruptive behind the line of scrimmage. Dareus also finished with two quarterback hits.

Other noteworthy nuggets from PFF's grades:

• Quarterback Tyrod Taylor had a career-high grade for the third straight week, with his ability as a rusher largely the reason for that.

• Chris Hogan was the Bills' top-graded receiver, catching all three of his targets in 24 offensive snaps.

• None of the Bills' three running backs forced a single missed tackle on 18 carries. Taylor, meanwhile, forced five missed tackles.

• Mario Williams received the lowest grade on the Bills' defense, with PFF giving him his first negative grade against the run and, despite getting a sack of Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota, another negative grade as a pass rusher.

• Rookie cornerback Ronald Darby allowed three catches on five targets, but those plays went for a total of just 20 yards. Darby also posted his best score of the season in run defense. In what was a good day for the Bills' secondary, cornerback Stephon Gilmore and safety Corey Graham each both receiving positive grades. Gilmore allowed just two catches on six targets and had an interception, while Graham gave up two catches on three targets for only 19 yards.

I agree that Miller hasn't been very good, but I also have a hard time taking PFF seriously anymore. Their player grades have become a joke.

Seeing a lot of griping about the Bills trading Cassel....why? There are probably 0 teams (didn't look it up) carrying two competent veteran backup QBs. Manuel won the job, Cassel got traded. Seems like a no-brainer to me. The Bills are lucky they've got Manuel and not, say, Brandon Weeden or Jimmy Clausen.

That's just EJ hate.

EJ didn't win the job, he was the #3 QB who was inactive until Cassel was traded.

Technically true but obviously that trade doesn't happen if they don't think the difference is negligable.

Not necessarily- they said at the time EJ had a better chance to develop as the #2 than the #3, plus possibly other financial and roster concerns, draft pick compensation, etc.

I really don't think Cassel is good, but he was the #2 QB at the time.

That might be true. The problem is that a lot of us don't think the difference was negligible. I was very much against the Cassel trade. The reason is because of the exact situation the team is in now.
