2021 Buffalo Bills - Same as it ever was*** (1 Viewer)

Since there is no game thread (and I feel like if I started one I'd be the only one in it) I'll add some comments on the game here.

First offensive drive for the Bills:

Trubiski looked pretty sharp. Love the quick/short passes.

Singletary looks nice and slippery - his best asset.

Knox with one nice catch, but looked really gassed lining up for the snap of the play where he dropped a ball. Conditioning issues?

Typo? Or intentional Parcells-type play on words?
Feel like iPhone autocorrect has gotten overly aggressive lately.

Singletary may actually be the RB to have in Buffalo.

Epenesa has started this preseason really strong including this game so far. Harrison Phillips is another guy who has played a lot better this preseason than he has played the last couple of years. If Phillips steps up and be a solid run defender, the defense suddenly looks a lot more stout.

As crazy as it sounds, the DL might actually be the strength of the defense this year. They have a ton of depth, and a bunch of players that should show improvement. The backfield should still be good, but the depth at DL is very intriguing.

Agreed. Vernon Butler very may well not even make the team. Rousseau looks like a real dude.

Speaking as a Bears fan, Trubisky was such a great pickup for Buffalo. I mean he was clearly a bad pick at #2 overall for Chicago, but its not like he was incompetent. He's probably a guy who is a perfect backup QB. He has a good arm, good mobility, and just needs consistency and perhaps better weapons would have helped that happen in Chicago.

I'm very happy to be moving on to Justin Fields, whom I liked for years at OSU, and thought should have been a top-3 pick. But, Trubisky wouldn't be the first high drafted QB, to flame out in one spot and have a solid career. Guys like Testaverde, Plunkett, Kerry Collins, Tannehill, and Dilfer are all potential career outcomes for Trubisky.

Maybe he shows well, and gets you guys a comp pick or a trade in a year when his value is rehabilitated.

Possible. But it's also possible that he was just in a bad situation. This game is kind of making it seem like he could be more than a perfect backup. He's looked good on a good/talented team (front office), with good coaching.

Rousseau with a sack. He’s been pretty dominant in both preseason games and reportedly looked great in training camp as well.

No idea why the Bears haven’t put Fields in yet.

You know, not sure we can actually draw anything from Singletary looking good earlier. All the Buffalo RBs tearing up the Bear defense. Buffalo offense in general just killing the Bears. Buffalo’s depth on both sides of the ball showing well so far. Hopefully the offensive line can perform this well once real games start.

Ugh!  I guess I am flying from Toronto to Buffalo or taking my chances on being able to talk my way through.
I'm not even really sure how you'd go about doing this.  There's no flights between Toronto and Buffalo, Buffalo is not equipped to handle international arrivals unless it's some special circumstance.  You'd probably have to fly to JFK, maybe Detroit or Chicago, and then to Buffalo.  Bizarre circumstance that it'd take you longer in terms of flight time than it would to drive.

Rousseau beat Sewell last week with an outside reach sack,  now another sack using power.  The Dolphins selected his teamate Jaelan Phillips earlier in the 1st round because of the versatility Flores likes, as he can play both DE and LB. Phillips has been dealing with a lower leg injury, but should play tonight for the first time. Now I'm wondering if Rousseau wasn't the better pick, we'll see.

I would indeed have to fly Toronto-Detroit-Buffalo which is my current plan. On the plus side it can be one way. I can take a car service and cross back over to Canada via land without issue

Andre Smith had a great game last week and then he almost killed Justin Fields. Got called for a 15 yard penalty for the hit (wasn’t a terrible hit though it was a personal foul these days).

So far for Buffalo, the worst thing for them is their guys keep getting dinged up. Stevenson took a punt 79 yards to the house but is not getting his ankle x-rayed.

Though the 2nd worst thing for the Bills today is probably Jake Fromm. He may be out of the league in a couple of weeks unless the Bills sign him to the practice squad.

Helmet to helmet. Maybe not a fine, but worthy of a penalty for sure.

The gap between Matt Barkley and Mitch Trubisky is approximately the size of the grand canyon.
No joke.  I know Barkley was apparently a good guy to have in the QB room, but I thought it was kind of crazy that he was our backup last year.  I was kind of thrilled with the Trubisky signing at the time and I feel a lot better about our QB depth now.  At worst, Trubisky is a replacement-level starting QB -- a guy like that can win a lot of games with this roster.

IR stash.
I’m not sure how valid of a strategy that is anymore with the new IR rules (teams can bring back players after just 3 games missed and can bring back unlimited players). Can they keep a guy on IR who may not actually be injured anymore?

I was thinking the same could apply to Hodgins, though this would be 2 years in a row for that for him. I don’t think he makes the team otherwise other than maybe a practice squad guy.

Hodgins is very likely headed to the practice squad IMO.  I don't think we can sneak Stevenson onto the PS, but nobody is claiming Hodgins off waivers.

McDermott said Phillips’s knee injury is going to take a while and it is the same knee he injured in 2019. Sounds like he tore it up again. That really sucks. Have a feeling that could end his career. He was starting to play pretty well this summer too. They’ll definitely miss him.

Ian Rapoport reporting that it’s not believed to be serious. Seems odd for McDermott to say other guys are day to day or week to week but said Phillips was out for longer.

The Rams cut Duck Hodges today. Hard to believe the Rams couldn’t trade a guy that PFF once called a better QB than Josh Allen for a first rounder or something instead of cutting him.

So now Beasley, Gabe Davis, Star, Milano and Klein all were sent home and will miss the next 5 days of practice because they are all unvaccinated and all came into close contact with a fully vaccinated trainer who tested positive. All 5 Bills have tested negative, but because they are not vaccinated they have to be removed from the facilities for 5 days.

So stupid. Especially for Star. He opted out last season and then doesn’t get vaccinated before playing this season!? Unreal.

These guys are some major pieces for the team. If (or more likely when) this happens during the season, it’s really going to hurt the team. These guys are not just role players, they are very important parts of the team.

So the Bills have 5 guys who are all locks to make the roster that we now know are not vaccinated. From their comments made previously and some observations people have made regarding mask wearing, there’s a really good chance that Hyde and Poyer are both unvaccinated as well.

That takes us to 7, 5 of which are starters on defense. If the Bills have just 2 more guys who make the 53 man roster who are not vaccinated, that will drop them below that 80% vaccinated threshold and force the entire team into more limiting protocols. McDermott has to be losing his mind.

One close contact and half the starting defense could be taken out.

Beasley, Davis, Star, Milano....is the entire starting 22 not vaccinated or what?  Other than Dion Dawkins and most likely Stefon Diggs, given his tweets, do we know if any of the other starters are even vaccinated?

Turns out Vernon Butler was also deemed to be a close contact and sent home. So apparently he isn’t vaccinated either.

Beane this afternoon said that they were barely over 80% vaccinated. Seems pretty clear that the unvaccinated I heavily weighted towards guys who will likely make the roster and there is no way they’ll be over 80% when the season starts.

It would be such a Bills thing if they tear through the season, end up the Super Bowl favorite, and then lose a ton of guys for a playoff game because they aren’t vaccinated.

Sure would.

But beyond that, it's really quite embarrassing as a fan of the team. Last year I bought a flag and flew it proud every game day... This year, I don't know. I haven't checked in on the local team (Lions) vax numbers, but if they are anywhere near the Falcons, I might be too ashamed. The health of the population is way more important than some football games.

What would have to happen for us to get a comp pick for Trubisky?
I think it’s pretty decent odds he’s signed next year to be a starter somewhere.  Is it all about how much money he signs for?

The Bills have to sign less free agents during a certain period than they lose to get comp picks. The round they get in return is based off of how much the guys they lose get paid compared to the guys they sign (I think that’s the gist).

I still think its like 50-50 Beasley is among final cuts. They are very deep at WR, and this is likely only going to become a bigger headache as the season gets going.

I was in that range*, as well, but McKenzie is one of the players that would make up for the loss of Beasley. This stupidity by McKenzie may have cost him his job and secured Beasley's. We shall see...

* - probably more like 65/35 toward staying on the team.

You guys must not be reading camp reports. Allen has been hitting Beasley a ton during camp. There’s no way they’re cutting him, and if they did you can bet there would be a grievance against them for cutting him because of the vaccination thing and the Bills would definitely lose the grievance.

They could easily claim it as conduct detrimental to the team.
