2021 College football thread - Auburn’s gotta Auburn. (1 Viewer)

My condolences to the rest of the Pac 12 but with that recruiting base and Riley's coaching acumen, that's USC's conference to lose.

Be curious to see how much of that really good class they lose regardless of who they hire when.
All of the CA recruits are gone I’m sure. I don’t follow recruiting that closely but apparently there is a top RB (Raleek Brown) who already sent some cryptic tweet about flipping. The kid took an official visit to USC after he committed to OU though and went to Mater Dei, so there was a chance he’d go anyways.

No clue who OU will target, but i really hope it’s not Heupel
Bob Stoops will serve as interim head coach for the #Sooners bowl game. Stoops was in the team meeting during which the players were informed of Riley’s departure

Meh, Oklahoma will find another coach just like they found Stoops and Riley.   Just hate it for the uncertainty and the new recruits.

I don't really understand the transfer portal.  Can Caleb Williams transfer now?  I got to watch him some here in DC during HS.  He's so incredibly talented.  But he went to Oklahoma for the coach if I remember.  I could see him transferring to Clemson.

Feels like a possible domino move should be expected. No rumors, but if you’re Cristobal you have to be listening, right? USC’s 2023 offense recruiting is ridiculous and will surely flip some OU commits. ND’s top WR recruit is a SoCal kid already praising the move (bye bye 😢)

Yes, he can transfer. The deadline for the 2022-23 academic year is May 1st of 2022, so plenty of time if he wants to go. He doesn’t seem like the type to bolt but who knows

I’m honestly curious how far the ripple goes. Kelly has done all he literally can at ND now. I know he talks a good game, but LSU and now OU are open. Both are at least calling, right?

I would think if he left, ND goes to Cincinnati once again for its next head coach (Fickell). And domino, and domino, and domino.

I highly doubt it. He’s 60 and has absolutely no ties to the area. Don’t get your hopes up.

The SEC angle is flawed, they aren’t going to the SEC for at least one more and possibly three years. They aren’t gonna have ten wins every year but they’ll be more competitive for southern recruits and OU has more to offer than most of the SEC programs.

More to offer in what way?

Any of the schools with openings that would be interested in Kelly are schools that he would NOT be interested in.

Help me understand the buyout clause.  So Lincoln Riley's buyout is like $4.25M.  Who pays that?  Surely not OU.  I assume USC owes that to Riley (or OU)?

I think technically Riley owes it to OU but he's getting that cash upfront from USC. (Generally that's how it works)

has Skip been lurking this thread?

@RealSkipBayless: Lincoln Riley never bought into Caleb Williams (blew the season by yanking him at Baylor) and obviously wanted no part of having to compete in the SEC. So he bolts for USC - great for the Trojans. Wonder if he'll try to convince Spencer Rattler to go with him?

They also "found" John Blake and that old drunk who smoked a pipe, Howard Shumpleberger or something.  Gotta get these hires right or you'll end up being like Texas.  Or USC, Florida, Miami, etc....

USC hasn't been relevant in 10 years plus.  The best thing that can happen to the Pac12 is having a marque team.  Oregon needs USC to become elite again.  All the schools do because right now (and it's been this way for too long) the Pac12 is weak.   They were what, 0-5 to the WAC this year?

Cristobal has leverage for sure but I'd be surprised if he left Oregon because a really bad USC program hired a splashy coach.  The sledding ain't easier anywhere else.

Oklahoma is an elite program…top 5 all-time. But IMO they're the one to watch on realignment impact.

Does Rattler follow him to SC?

Caleb Williams tweeted this: “I appreciate all the concerns about the situation but I am also happy for Coach Riley, mama Riley, Sloan and Stella for that huge opportunity ahead. That’s all I plan to say right now! #boomer”

he gone

Hell ####### no. You can keep him.

So Riley has clearly been in contact with USC for weeks now, correct? Wonder if he had a foot out the door the last few games. He didn’t exactly cover himself in glory from a coaching perspective, and the hissy fit at the end of the Baylor is really odd looking back.

They were 10-2 but more like a 7-5 team to be honest. They came out flat almost every game sans TCU and OSU, and Riley seemed frustrated all year.

I am sure that Lincoln knew he was leaving.  It must have been hard knowing you are going to leave and trying to do a good job.    I know people get "short timers" syndrome when they are leaving their current job.

Jeff Lebby (OC at Ole Miss) went to OU and started his coaching career there. Coached under Heupel at UCF. They want someone with ties to the SEC and OU. He’s 37 and supposedly recruits well. imo that’s the kind of guy they need to pursue.
