2022 Music Thread. New Year, New Music. (1 Viewer)

I like the new album from Pittsburgh band String Machine. They have multiple singers and horns that produce kind of a 2007 blog band vibe a la Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros or the Polyphonic Spree.  It's nothing particularly original but the sunny upbeat sound is good for Spring.

Churn it Anew

Recent albums - Old Farts 80s Edition

Tears for Fears - The Tipping Point: there's nothing as great as the single that came out last year but there's a lot of enjoyable Pop craftsmanship on display

Midnight Oil - RESIST:  I never was a huge fan of the band back in the day but they've done a nice job recapturing what made a lot of people love them. After 40 years, Peter Garrett's vocals and I have agreed to disagree.

Johnny Marr - Fever Dreams Pts 1-4:  He's been releasing bits of this album longer than Kanye has but it's a solid listen throughout its 72 minute entirety.  Johnny can still write a hook with the best of them and his work as a sideman has kept him current. He's become a perfectly adequate singer.

oh... came in to say that Nation of Language put out a new single today- a cover of Broken Social Scene's Stars and Sons
Their 2020 album Introduction, Presence is one of my favorite albums from the last few years.  Last year's A Way Forward was OK, but had a few duds on it.  Looks like they are starting to tour now so prolly no album this year.  If I was a younger lad living in the city, I'd go check them out in Chicago.  Now.... eh.

I"m about to open up my RR for the week.... if I see Dead Can Dance or Pixies live albums for the 15th time in a row, imma slap a algorithm upside the algobooty.

eta: :hot:

anybody else noticing Spotify's algorithms sucking lately?

it's the same handful of albums EVERY SINGLE WEEK on my RR.

even the usually reliable Discover Weekly has turned into just pulling #### from my own playlists. so few new or different tunes.

I have noticed a couple songs being repeated in each of the last few weeks... I have also spent less time listening to my RR during that time, and assumed that they just really wanted me to hear something.

P.S. I got about halfway though mine this week and was really digging it. New PUP and Iceage were fun, I have never heard of Grumpster before (girl punk) but their new song slaps.  Mom Jeans is on there, they have a new album I want to check out. A band called Momma had a real fun song (sludgy guitar based girl band).  i.am.orange is one of those bands that have been repeated, not sure if this is a new song or not. I am hoping that the rest of the list is this much fun.

that's great.

other than hip-hop I have no interest in or Turkish EDM, I haven't had a new (to me) band from Spotify in ages.

this week- it's DCD, Pixies, GRMLN (it's GRMLN every week for a couple years), GBV (same), Coolzey, Metronomy, Beach House, BODEGA (the relase from a few weeks ago that I love, but this week in German), Alt-J, Empath, Tears for Fears, Talk Talk and a bunch of remixes.

oh, and a new Pond.

I really like this whole album and for me the stand out is 'My Demons' (which unsurprisingly is also the big synthy pop song)

You might like the debut album from Lo Moon. They're a LA band who's currently opening for The War on Drugs on their European tour. They have a similar widescreen sound as the headliners but with more synths and effects than Classic Rock guitars.  Lo Moon's guitar player is the son of Eurythmics' Dave Stewart which probably gives him access to every pedal ever made.

Raincoats (it gets going after the two minute mark)

Does Machine Gun Kelly have a new British accent or something?

Oh my God I see Lil' Wayne guesting and I sort of have to listen.

Lil' Wayne singing with AutoTune.

I guess these guys are the new cultural pop heroes.

Society is dead. We're all ####ed. Truckers take over Ottawa (see what I did there, NV?)

The world is ending.

Signed,

ay!

Bodega's full album is out. it's not at the level of Statuette on the Console (my favorite tune of the year so far... in whatever language), but it's good.

More consistent, Nilüfer Yanya's new album is also out and is really good.

and you'll never guess what Spotify threw at me on my RR- Dead Can Dance's latest live album. again. for about the 15th week in a row at least. I'm pretty sure they're just ####### with me at this point.

Young Guv's GUV III is likely to be the best Power Pop album I hear this year unless he drops GUV IV before December. It sounds sort of like a thousand other Power Pop acts without seeming overly derivative of anyone specifically.

Full GUV III album stream

Sounds like it may be in my wheelhouse... but I have a real hard time listening to anyone with "young" or "lil" in their name.

Thanks, Spotify!

Please keep pumping the Dead Can DAnce and Pixies live albums, bad hip hop and Turkish EDM instead of...you know...stuff like this that you know I actually love.
I had 5 or 6 country (country-adjacent?) songs on my release radar this week.  That's what I get for bagging about how good it was last week.

A couple of new albums I liked

Reeling by The Mysterines. They're a four-piece from Liverpool with a sound that's more Garage and Classic Rock influenced than the typical UK Post-Post-Punk shouters.

Hung Up

The Jacket by Widowspeak.  Nice rootsy Dream Pop with a singer who reminds me of Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star.
