2022 NBA Roster Draft - This draft goes to 12! (4 Viewers)

I haven't seen him nearly that many times, but every time I've caught a Mavericks game he stands out as a guy who just gets stuff done. He's not an electric scorer but he's steady. He's not a great passer but he's a good one. He's not a great defender but he's a good one. I think he's perfect for what my team needs, just a steady guy he's going to give you something positive every single night. There's a lot to be said about that in a league full of inconsistent performers.
I think all of that is true.

5.05 Christian Wood

Almost took him with my last pick, sticking out to me here. Can he play with Capela, probably not too much, but that's ok, we can mix and match depending on what the other team is running out there. An elite pick and roll or pick and pop option, the offense should be pretty nasty with him out there. Really good rebounder, defense questionable but could improve when finally not forced to be on a dog #### team and with motivation from Jimmy.

So I’m looking for a few different skill sets and finally decided that I would take the guy who can kind of do all of them to an extent.

5.07 - Scottie Barnes

can defend 4-5 positions, move well on the perimeter, roll to the rim, provide some rim protection, pass, run the point a little bit, and his shot, while a work in progress, is better than anyone expected for this year.

@Eephus

5.08 - De'Andre Hunter (#12)

Injuries have interrupted Hunter's third year breakout just like they did in his second. In between, he's shown flashes of a well-rounded game as a two way wing. He's healthy now and playing starter minutes.  There's almost half a season left for my come bet to pay off.

I have been passing up Brunson despite my Mavs fandom because I've seen like 35 of the Mavs games and while he sometimes gets a few assists, I pretty much always come away thinking he's basically a smaller Lou Williams in a lot of ways. He's not great on D, and he's a steady presence who does a good job getting to the basket and making the open plays. I don't want to minimize that. But he just doesn't feel like a top 30-ish PG to me and I'm gonna be sad if the Mavs pay him like it.
Agreed.  Brunson is a hell of a player that does everything the right way, like he did at Villanova.  He won player of the year in college but I don't even think he was the best player on his own team (Mikal Bridges).  The more you watch him play, the more those non-glaring weaknesses become clear.

Like Instinctive, I agree with all of this.  That said, there is no way the Mavs should pay Brunson what the market will probably demand.  Dallas needs to find the best offer and send him out before the trade deadline.  His production is great but it's about to be surpassed by his contract.

Why do you care about the nuggets?
Same reason everyone watched Edmonton hockey in the 80's.  To witness GREATNESS.  They are in the West, no threat to the Celtics anyway.  And no, I did not draft Cade Cunningham just to watch him against Joker tonight.

I do enjoy when Denver does the halftime baby races.  🙂

Funny thing is, Joker makes at least one pass a game, that is as good as any in the Larry Bird highlight tape I had from the 80's   Tonights highlight pass was the over the shoulder drop to Will Barton with like 5:00 to go in the first quarter.  Epic.

Sorry to say, if it gets to me tonight/tomorrow AM I'm going to hold up the draft before picking another guy that isn't even on fantasy teams.  Work meetings start early and last till late morning Pacific.  If it's to me, at that time I'll figure it out.  And no I can't give a list because I could give a list of 10 and each one would go to one of you jerks before I choose my losers.

We'll have @DJackson10 pick for you.

Michael Porter Jr

:bag:

@Instinctive
I was hoping he would fall to my next turn. Career 42% three point shooter at pretty high volume and difficult attempts. Without the back injury this season, I think he's a second round pick, along with his other injured teammate, Murray. He's moving around a little more and taking more not-quite-set shots in warmups. It sounds like he's going to be coming back prior to the end of the season.

5.10 Matisse Thybulle

Best perimeter defender in the NBA. Probably not a starter for me (or maybe O'Neal isn't), but I can plug in any number of mediocre 6th man guards with a handle who will do fantastic alongside this squad anyway. My J.J. Barea clone is out there. For now, I'm at the "take guys who are better than everyone else at one thing" stage of my draft.

With O'Neal, KD, and Thybulle, I think I can handle any guard or forward in the league now with solid defense. I've got elite rim protection (not quite Gobert but damn close), and I've got perhaps the greatest scorer this side of Michael Jordan in NBA history.

5.11 - Keldon Johnson (SAS) - SF

BPA.  He's a young wing shooting 43% from deep and just won a gold medal with the US Olympic team.  His advanced metrics are middle of the pack, but the Spurs seem to have lost that thread since Kawhi forced his way out.

I like this pick. In a dynasty-oriented field I'd have taken him a round or two ago.

Another guy I was looking at with my next pick. He's fun but I am a bit skeptical of his offensive fit with almost any team.

This thing about him being the best perimeter defender is like a 7 hour discussion but this football game is so coked up, I don’t have the energy now

I believe I’m up.   So far with

Trae

Beal

Tobias Harris

Deandre Ayton

I have a hole at the power forward position that I’d like to fill with somebody that is versatile enough to defend opposing power forwards but is also capable of helping with other centers.  I also would like somebody that is a decent offensive threat.  The guy that I like to play this role is Wendell Carter Jr. He’s a great defender that has a nice offensive game as well.

My pick is Wendell carter jr.

It came down to him or Hunter for me a few picks ago

I'm thinking:

A) There's still so much firepower out there and KD solves a lot of problems (remember Andre Roberson???)

B) I think Philly has been a horrid fit for him, often stuck with Embiid AND Simmons (obviously not this year) on the court.

Imagine him in a role where he's playing wing defense but his offensive position is the 5. He's a pick and dive guy. 7-foot wingspan and 41-inch vertical scream "should be a pretty good dive guy". I would love to see him on The Mavs with KP honestly.

He's definitely prime for a role similar to a current teammate of Durant's.

So, although I already have a DPOY candidate in Myles Turner to anchor my defense, with Luka and Herro being defensive minues and Ant being inconsistent I felt I needed another solid defensive player to help out in the paint. I was scrolling through some of the defensive metrics looking for a good defensive PF with little regard to offense since I am already loaded up there.

But guess what I found? A guy with one of the best Defensive Ratings at PF in the league who averages 15 & 10 while shooting better than 40% from 3. No, really. I checked over and over again and he hasn't been picked. I know we like to throw "SOD" around, but this time it's accurate. I selecet:

5.13 PF Bobby Portis, MIL

these were the guys i was talking about when i said there were still stars out there. Wood should get AllStar consideration for draggin his corps of corpses to as many Ws as he has, and i'll trade Tatum for Barnes str8up RIGHT NOW. Giannis Jr, helping Nick Nurse move toward his dream to become the first team to start five 6'10 guys
