2022 NBA Roster Draft - This draft goes to 12! (2 Viewers)

10.20 - Isaiah Hartenstein C, LAC - I've eyeballed him for 2 rounds now and am ecstatic that he fell to me.  An ideal backup center; he is a 7-footer who plays defense with energy and is offensively efficient.  His advanced stats are through the roof and has been a great boost for the Clippers bench.  I saw him play the other night and he looks like a guy who will be starter in the near future.

11.01 - Carmelo Anthony SF, LAL - sure he's 38 yes old and clearly at the end of his stellar career, but he still gets buckets. Put up 19 tonight and capable of occassional 25 pt outbursts off the bench.  For my 11th pick, he's a great veteran teammate the young'ns will love being around and can still fill it up from time to time.

11.03 Kemba Walker PG

He's not a great fit in New York as there isn't enough shooting around the main pick and roll action and Thibs wants everybody other than Rose to play 40 MPG. Offensively, Kemba is still a reasonable facsimile of his previous self. He is the third most frequent pick and roll ball handler in terms of possession frequency (behind Yong and Paul) and is in the 80th percentile in terms of efficiency on those plays. His three point shooting is still very good, especially when you consider that the majority of his threes are off the dribble. Nice player to add to my no-defense all shooting back court.

Most teams don't even use more than 8 or 9 players when the games really matter.
but too many teams use a half-dozen scrubs for 8-12 minutes when, if you want there people to learn the game and their roles, using less players for more mins (even if you rotate them so everyone gets a taste) is more effective. nobody say no to no one no mo

I spent about 10 minutes debating Kemba versus Melo.  It really just came down to who was playing better over the last month. Melo has been more consistent this season and Kemba seems to be struggling lately.

Because I was curious on how true this is, here are the playoff teams that won a series and how many players in their rotation:

  • Suns - 9
  • Nuggets - 9.5 (Barton was injured for most of the playoffs)
  • Jazz - 9
  • Clippers - 10
  • Bucks - 9
  • Nets - 10
  • Hawks - 9.5 (Kinda weird here as Reddish and Hunter were both hurt for most of the playoffs, they had 9 consistent every game players plus whatever those to brought)
  • Sixers - 11
I think the more true statement WRT playoff rotations is that the minutes distribution changes rather than the number of rotation players.

Melo also has a consistent part of the rotation which very much plays to his advantage in this case. I think there may be a little more upside to Kemba if he gets traded to a team that can provide him a more consistent place in the rotation and has a team that can better utilize his strengths (pick and roll ability) and hide his weaknesses (defense), just like my fake team!

We are only 20 teams compared to 30 actual teams. Our 8th and 9th guys are way better (well, they should be) than typical 8 and 9 guys.

Melo has been a basketball embarrassment for five years and it troubles me how few people see that. a bigger reason the Lakers need Nugenix (she'll like it, too) than Russ

Embarrassment is a little harsh.  He's clearly a shell of his former self and mails it in on defense, but he still has a knack for scoring that shows up from time to time.

11.06 Cameron Payne

Was impressed with him in last years playoffs, can run a second team offense and pretty good on defense. Seems like a dude who could play some minutes when needed.

11.07 - Bones Hyland

This offense could get a little clunky at times, so I would like a microwave bench scorer and also another backup point guard and hyland should be able fill both of those.  As the 11th man, he shouldn’t have to do too much, just do his thing when we need him.

@Eephus

11.08 - Rajon Rondo (#4)

The extra two roster slots provide an opportunity for me to add a true backup PG.  Schroder and Harden will be the primary ballhandlers when Conley is on the bench but it's a nice luxury to have the wily veteran as another option.

He's been playing better since getting traded to Cleveland.

11.11 Obi Toppin NYK PF

Great player in college, but he's struggled to find his fit in the NBA.  His athleticism would immediately be used in pick n rolls with Chris Paul when Porzingis or Lopez hit the bench.  His advanced numbers show he can rebound and block shots (and he plays hard) so I still give him a chance.

My team is basically perfect at this point, but the one thing I don't have on my bench is a guy who can just come in for 10-15 minutes per game and score like a mofo. So I take:

11.13 SG Terence Davis, SAC

Sorry for holding this up.

11.15 Cedi Osman, SF, CLE

One of the more inconsistent players year to year I've seen, but having one of his up years. Slightly above average shooter who normally doesn't get killed defensively.

@Desert_Poweris up next.

11.18 Austin Reaves, G/F

He is Alex Caruso 2.0, except he plays nothing like him.  Outside of LA people probably think he's just another meme who Lakers fans are hyping up, but just like AC, Reaves is a legit playoff rotation guy, right now.  He's always in the right spot on defense and can do a little bit of everything on offense. LeBron absolutely loves him (just like he did AC) and they just combined for the greatest video of the NBA year.

Well, that 20-10-1+trey-1+block C is STILL on the board but i feel the last pick of a draft like this should be somehow predictive. i'll take the kid that Nick Nurse would have as the PG of the all-6'-10" team he dreams about...

12.02 Ziaire Williams, Wing, Mem

i dont watch college ball unless a hot-take star is in a rivalry or tourney game, but i watch a lot of player reels that fans put together on Youtube. Next to Mobley, and juuuust ahead of a kid who aint been took yet, this kid had the best reel (better than the top 2 pix in the draft). unreal handle for a kid that big, good stroke, good floor instincts. no way to tell if kids like this will ever make it cuz most of em wanna wave @ 2-3 guys on D then run down to a spot and its apparently reeeeally hard to say "no" to a pro baller anymore. but working out with kids like these GOTSta make vets worry about dey jobs. remember i told ya about him. this was fun - thx, frosty.

12.3 Naz Reid, C

Always catches my eye when the Lakers play the Wolves.  His stats look good whenever KAT is injured and even has some 3 point range.  I like him as an emergency big man.

PG- Tyrese Haliburton, Davion Mitchell

SG- Shai Gilgeaus-Alexander, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Austin Reaves

SF- Lu Dort, Evan Fournier

PF- LeBron James, Lauri Markkanen

C- Robert Williams, Serge Ibaka, Naz Reid

@Instinctive

wikkid goofballs -

G - Malcolm Brogdon, Russell Westbrook

G - Maaaacus Smaaaat, Josh Giddey,, Ziaire Williams

F - Brandon Ingram, Saddiq Bey, Devin Vassel

F - Evan Mobley, Rui Hachimura

C - Nikola Jokic, JaVale McGee

reminder: i intend to take my starting team off the floor in unison for 6-10 minutes each half, with Russell's Goons wreaking 94ft of havoc for as long as it works

Nassir Little, F, Portland

The Blazers just announced Little will have surgery to repair the labrum in his shoulder and will miss the rest of the season.

It doesn't affect his eligibility here but it sucks for him after having a mini-breakout in the last month.

Sorry for holding this up.

11.15 Cedi Osman, SF, CLE
This is the guy I almost drafted when I took Josh Richardson in the 10th round. I had Osman's write-up already done, then changed my mind at the last second. That's why it still said "Cleveland" for Richardson's team instead of Boston   :bag:
