Pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney is reportedly weighing an offer from the NY Jets in free agency. Here are all the details and what it all means.
The NY Jets have experienced an overall quiet free agency period highlighted by some under the radar signings.
Late this week Gang Green has decided to change their tactics and opt for more of a splash. On Thursday the team had inquired about Jacksonville Jaguars pass-rusher Yannick Ngakoue.
Now we have learned the team has also made a contract offer to free-agent sack specialist Jadeveon Clowney, formerly of the Seattle Seahawks.
“The three-time Pro Bowl edge rusher has been weighing offers from multiple teams, believed to include the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans, in addition to the Seahawks,” per Gregg Bell of The News Tribune.
When Clowney entered free agency he had hopes of landing a big-time contract that paid him north of $20 million annually on a long-term deal. Obviously a few days into free agency, he hasn’t received the offers he was hoping for.
Per Bell’s reporting, Jadeveon’s troubling medical history has given teams pause.
In his six NFL seasons, he has only started an entire 16 game season once. Last season with the Seahawks, Clowney was forced to miss three of the final five regular-season games due to a sports hernia.

Jets have been searching for a top edge for over a decade so I wouldnt be unhappy with this signing - reading offers could be in the $13-14m range which would be great or the $18m range which is not so great....my concerns are while Clowney is a top DL he isnt really a sack specialist and he gets hurt quite a bit....definite gamble
But my biggest problem with a Clowney signing is why invest that much money in another DL and not OL? This kind of $ should have went to Conklin to protect Sam....I suppose JD just not high on Conklin if thats the case.....if Clowney's market has slipped so its incredible value then go for it....
Emmanuel Sanders contract has to be a kick to Robbie Anderson....older WR but overall a more complete WR and he got under $10M per yr....at this point Robbie may have to take a prove it again deal....maybe a 1 yr 10M contract? win/win

We need to lose that Conklin narrative. He's a good run-blocker who is only average at pass-blocking. Plus he's not a good athlete. The Jets want to pass and they want to do a spread o-line with athletic linemen. JD did not want to commit $14m to a guy that didn't fit their plan.
Today they added Van Roten, the guard from Carolina. He's an athletic guard that is a good pass-blocker and rarely commits a penalty, just like McGovern. All three guys that they added fit this athletic profile. Before anyone gets upset about any o-line that we pass up in the Draft, you'll need to see if they were considered athletic guys that can move. They also like players that can play multiple positions on the line. For the first time in a long time, we have a GM that has a plan and fits the coach's preferred player target profile.

Love all the depth to o-line he added. The plan is probably to draft some guys as well and have backup options for when they don’t work out.
Now they can also consider Lamb or Jeudy at 11 if the don’t love the OT that falls to them. I still want to see some linemen drafted but it does give them flexibility.

It's early so they still might add another tackle.
I could see them trading back from 11 while picking up another second or third rounder. Then they could take a tackle later in the first like Cleveland or Jackson who fits their athletic profile. If they can get another day 2 pick from the trade, then they could easily get a CB or edge player. With five day 1 and day 2 picks, they could get 2 OL, 1 WR, 1 CB, 1 edge. Then go for RB and another WR with their next 2 picks. Homerun.

Another very good signing - 1 yr prove it deal - assume the salary is pretty low....he was hurt last yr - missed 4 games and still had 50 tackles and 3 picks....like it!
Still should have quite a bit of cap....wondering when Robbie will give up the delusion of $15m yr and come back for under $10M!

Desir had a hamstring injury most of the year and played without practicing or limited practices often. He should rebound.
Robbie, I hate to say it, is dumb as dirt. I would say that he's getting bad advice, but this is the same guy that claimed he was a top 5 WR this year. We know his history of bad judgment. If you have ever heard him in interviews, he sounds like a crackhead extra roaming "Hamsterdam" in HBO's "The Wire". He tweeted yesterday that patience is the key. He might be the last one to realize his delusion. I hope his agent finally convinces him to take a 1-2 year deal. Maybe his agent will tell him that he can get $20-25 million when the cap goes up big time in 2 years.

I'll take it, but I would also take Perriman. I wish we had more picks. I wouldn't rule out a trade back to later in the first to add another second or third rounder. We still have the following needs:
Another offensive tackle
A WR (or two depending what happens in FA)
Some help at pass rush
Another CB
Another RB
Currently we can do that with our first, second, 2 thirds, and 4th round pick. We'll probably want to draft a guard, too.
In free agency, we still need a punter and hopefully a kicker. I'm not sure i can live with another season of Fickens.

Outside of his Rhule connection, it seems like an odd place to go. They have a true #1 WR (Moore) and now 2 speed guys (Anderson and Samuel) with a QB that doesn't throw deep.

Yeah, pretty clear he wasn't really valued there. And again, I can't say I blame them. He just seems like a guy who could mail it in at any moment now that his future is secure (which you'd like to think it is, with $12 Mil coming in year one)
I'm much more upset about losing a target Sam is familiar with than the actual player. The salary was reasonable, but I think resources could be better distributed.

says to me that JD was willing to do 2 yrs/$20M so Car needed a bumper to distance itself - $12M yr one vs a likely $10M/10 split would be enough - no way he was giving the Jets a discount..not thrilled to lose a target for Sam but lets see what JD does now....

I liked him as a deep threat, but he didn't do much else. I think I've been pretty vocal that I didn't care if he left. I'm just not a fan of the guy. Too much of a knucklehead.
I just hope we land Perriman otherwise we'll have to draft 2 Wrs for sure. Get a speed threat with Perriman and a true #1 WR in the draft.

Yeah one take away here is that it’s pretty clear Douglas wasn’t a big fan even at what I thought was a reasonable contract

Look I wasnt a huge fan of Anderson but the fact remains that the Jets now have the worst group of WRs in the league...even if they sign Perriman.....something needs to be done or they are going to Sanchez poor Sam......wish they had 2 1st rders as picking between OL/WR is going to be tough....maybe Trent Williams gets cut and they sign him so they can focus on WR....going into the season with Perriman, Crowder and a 2d rd WR is just not acceptable.

They will draft 2 WRs if they don't add someone like Perriman. I'll worry about it after the draft although to be honest, I'm a little more worried about my 401k now and our health situation. I had no faith in Maccagnan, but I think JD will figure things out.

They were non factors last yrs for various reasons - and I have very little faith theyll be used properly or impact receivers next yr....I really wanted an OL in the 1st but this definitely puts them in the mix for a WR at #11..... still should be able to get a solid OL in rd 2 and 3

Herndon was a non-factor due to suspension and then injury. Griffin was very productive in his stead and is far less athletic and dynamic - hopefully they are on the field together next season.

They could get a solid WR in 2/3 as well. I think Fant has some potential but relying on him to protect Sam's blindside is a little scary. I'm still heavily leaning towards OT at 11, provided that one Douglas likes falls there. If they do take a WR I won't complain though.

I could be wrong, but JD doesn't strike me as the type that will give up draft picks in this draft. We have too many needs.
If anything, I think he will trade down from 11 to pick up a second day pick. If by some miracle Wirfs is there, he's the pick. Bechton might be too big and raw for them. I don't think Thomas is athletic enough. Wills? Maybe. I really could see them trading down and picking up a tackle like Cleveland, Jackson, or even Peart. Then a second round WR. Or they go WR like Ruggs or Jefferson in the first and one of the second tier OTs in the second. Then they may even double up on WR with that extra second day pick.

Anderson is worth an extra few million IMO - especially when considering chemistry with Sam....if they paid $3-4M for Perriman then fine but $8M not worth it

I wanted Perriman over Anderson.
Perriman was a former first rounder that was hurt his first couple of years. That really set his development back, but he was more talented than undrafted Anderson. Anderson was really fast. His 40 was 4.34. Perriman ran a 4.25 on his pro day!
Perriman showed explosiveness the prior year in Cleveland in a part-time role and capitalized with a $4m one-year contract in TB. He wasn't going to get playing time over Evans and Godwin, so he played a third down role. He didn't do much because he was really their 5th option in the offense until late in the year when both Godwin and Evans got hurt and he exploded as their #1 receiver. In those last 4 games, he averaged 105 yards and scored 5 tds. Anderson had 3 games over 100 yards the whole season and 5 tds in 16 games.
Perriman had 1 dropped pass. Anderson stopped routes and had alligator arms.
Anderson was 190 pounds (he looked around 170). Perriman was 215 pounds with muscular arms.
Anderson has multiple police incidents and wanted to nut in the eye of the cop's wife. He's a freaking moron. All this talk about having good chemistry with Darnold is overstated. His advanced stats aren't that impressive.
I am fully confident that Perriman can replace Anderson if he stays healthy, especially as a speedy WR to stretch the field. I'm even willing to gamble that he has more upside especially if he's a late bloomer due to those early injuries. Now they can draft a true #1 WR and JD has options at #11 again. Just my two cents.
