2023 New York Jets (6 Viewers)

Yeah, guessing he makes the team now. Betting they don't think he'd go unclaimed (or maybe he'd choose another team's practice squad where he'd have a more direct path to potential playing time)

I was on the Ty Johnson train this time last year (after he looked good at the end of the 2020 and the preseason) but he's clearly a JAG

Yeah, Johnson is still here for now. He can't pass protect to save his life (or our QB's life).

Gotta wonder if we trade a d-lineman. We have too many decent ones.

Seems like some weird stuff going on with the safeties. They're cutting Parks and Pinnock (Who also has some corner flexibility) which means that Davis (barf) probably makes the initial 53.

Hopefully they're just waiting for the first round of cuts in hopes of a better player shaking loose, but I dont like this at all. Reeks of protecting a terrible draft pick to save face.

You have to see how it plays out first before we can get irritated. It just doesn't smell right. Maybe they plan on signing a free agent.

The weird thing is that you usually don't cut a player before you sign the replacement. Pinnock is a weird cut because they treasure flexibility (allegedly).

Maybe this is a move where there resign him after Week 1 so his contract isn’t fully guaranteed?

So we had 7 players claimed overnight plus another 4 in the previous 2 weeks. Crazy.

We didn't add anyone on waivers.

When was the last time this roster had superfluous talent?

I really hope Zach Wilson steps up this season, as he's the only one that can really submarine a "loaded" offense and a young up and coming defense. JD deserves for this team to become a winner.

Everyone is praising JD for re-making the roster because everyone else is made claims on our players. Credit be given. He has definitely made it better.

This is for the negative guys in our fanbase:
"There is a flip side to that coin" - Neal McCauley in Heat (I love you Michael Mann!)

What if JD and Saleh aren't that great in evaluating their own players and released better players or aren't great at constructing their 53? e.g. kept Davis and Shepherd. Let go of half of the secondary (all picked up) and only have 3 tackles? Anyway, something to ponder.

Hopefully JD adds another tackle somehow. Maybe a safety.

I just don't know what Davis has possibly shown to justify keeping him. He looks like a guy who has never played football.

I know I'm one of the more optimistic fans in here, but I do not feel good about Week 1 at all. I have a feeling the Jets with Flacco are in for a long day. Possibly the worst Week 1 matchup that could be scheduled imo.

Looking at it from the other side, I have no idea what to expect from Baltimore in week 1. They have SO many guys coming back from injury who have played sparingly (or not at all) in preseason, that it's hard to get a handle on what they have.

I could see NY (who I think is going to be pretty good this season, given decent QB play) giving them fits.

I'm definitely one of the more optimistic Jets fans and I made sure to draft the Baltimore defense for this juicy match-up. Statue Flacco could be in for a long day...but not as long as us fans.

We still don’t know if the Jets can stop the run and most of their moves leaned more towards pass defense (as it should) - and as you said Flacco is going to get sacked 8 times behind a line that hasn’t really played together yet.

Non- jet fan, you had a great draft. Once you figure out/solve qb position then you have a chance to win.

Toughest part to figure out. I have to think if Wilson doesn't work out and everything else is in place, they might go the veteran free agent route. I can't see them drafting another QB and waiting for him to develop.

I know Jimmy G is not on the team but if Wilson falters this is an obvious match as he will be a FA next year. They would be all over him rather than drafting yet another QB IMO

The 2023 qb class is loaded which is why numerous teams are sitting tight,

Well this isn’t exactly the news I wanted. I only have Wilson on one roster, but it’s a total rebuild & don’t need him this year.

Still, it’s SF, and I was kinda hoping he’d be a useful part of the rebuild for next year. That is starting to sound less likely.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh said Zach Wilson (knee) will miss at least the season's first four weeks.

Saleh said he wants Wilson to recover physically and mentally after suffering a preseason knee injury that required surgery. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said Wilson "had no setbacks" in his recovery. As NFL Network's Gregg Rosenthal said, "This feels like a benching." After a miserable rookie season in which he posted the league's lowest completion rate over expected, Wilson reportedly was inconsistent throughout Jets training camp. Perhaps Saleh is conceding that the team's offense is in much better hands with Flacco or third-stringer Mike White under center.
**************

Im not sure about the bolded part but I am a bit perplexed - he got in a workout this week so why rule him out 4 weeks right now? No matter how you slice it this is not good for Wilson. This regime needs to win more than they need to "take a look at Wilson" at this point - If Flacco is 3-1 or 4-0 there is no way they bench him.....are we looking at a Fitzpatrick type of run?

If Flacco is 3-1 or 4-0
I’m thinking this may be unlikely.

I doubt it’s a benching - it’s a bit odd though and it does seem like maybe they’re protecting Wilson a bit from a tough schedule to start the season - Baltimore, Cleveland and Pittsburgh defense are for real. But if that’s necessary than this guy is not your franchise QB.

Or maybe Cecil was really onto something?

Will this team ever have a franchise QB?

If they are protecting him at this point then its clear he isnt the answer.

Also agree its unlikely but what if they are 2-2 with the O looking solid - I mean .500 after a month is the best theyve been in years lol - this is a recipe for disaster for Wilson IMO

Yeah I think maybe Salah is hoping Flacco gets them off to a good start so he’s “forced” to keep starting him.
Only the Jets could sucker punch you at the last minute right before you start getting excited for the season.

I kind of forgot about game and made lunch plans with a lady friend - and can’t say I’m terribly upset to miss Flacco getting destroyed by the Ravens D.

Just a few days ago it was reported (I forget where) that Wilson was very limited at practice and was walking with a noticeable limp.

I was skeptical he’d start this week.

A month seems like they want to get his knee completely healed up - as you said, rough schedule. Maybe best to let Flacco take those lumps.

I’m hopeful Wilson has a future behind center.

Recovery from meniscus repair is usually just a couple of weeks. People seem to forget about the bone bruise. That can take 1-2 months. They are just letting him heal properly.

i agree that the "benching" speculation is wrong - but why announce hes out to through week 4 at this point? When he was injured he was given a 4-6 week timetable - starting week 5 would out it at 7 weeks....not crazy but why not keep teams guessing and give him a shot to come earlier when he got a practice in earlier this week....the whole thing just seems strange thats all.

I've learned never to try to figure out the decisions of the Jets or Mets.

I agree, I was hoping he would play, but that always seemed like crazy talk, I had a meniscus trim done last October and I have 30 years on Zach but it always seemed nuts to me that he would be ready, combine that with a bone bruise and week 4 is fine, this team is not making the playoffs this year.

I just want to see them be feisty and be a tough out watching new hustle guys like Clemons develop and see if Sauce is legit as he has seemed in camp... plenty to watch for early in the season and then from weeks 4 -17 lets see if we are drafting a QB next year or can wreck havoc with a big trade haul or grabbing Will Anderson.

Saleh is such a young earnest novice head coach and he really should play all injuries close to the vest or this media and fanbase will continue to roast

Well he did say he could return week 4.

Building on the prior thread title - Watching the Bills last night was so depressing - as the Brady/Pats era was winding down this could have been the Jets easily....poor GM/coaching has destroyed this franchise - even if they did draft Josh over Sam you cant convince me that Josh would be the QB he is today. So now we are looking at another all world QB - powerhouse team to chase for the next decade while Jets trot out Joe Flacco and god knows what at tackle on Sunday - good times!

Yes, the Bills own this division for the next 10 years most likely as we sit here and hope we're not trotting out another rookie QB at the start of next season.

I don't think even Gase could have ruined Josh Allen to be honest. He's a true stud. I won't re-write history and say I preferred Allen to Darnold, but I did want Fields over Wilson in that draft. It would at least be much more fun to watch a QB that can dominate a game running and passing for a change. It's just so frustrating that this team never seems to get it right.

The fact that Chad Pennington is the best QB we've seen as fans is pretty telling - how could they have not lucked into a franchise QB in 50 years?

I cant lie either - I didnt want Josh - thought he was too raw and inaccurate lol - but you gotta figure a life long football GM should have seen it in either him or Mahomes...passing on both is brutal.

As for Wilson - I trusted JD but didnt understand how they could pass on Fields after some of those monster games down the stretch....but 49ers did as well so who knows. Wilson is following the same pattern as Sam with injuries and not developing. Now he is out 4 games again and will have to ramp up without any runway....unless he adjusts and shows his stuff quickly I dont see how they dont bring in a vet like Jimmy G next year....ive read some hype on going after Lam JAx if he doesnt sign a deal with Balt but I dont see how they let him go.

I say the same thing about the Bears as well. I hope Fields works out for us but Jay Cutler has been the best QB the franchise has had in my lifetime and they didn't even draft him. Jim McMahon was the best QB they drafted and he couldn't stay healthy.

Yeah, not gonna lie and say I wanted Allen.

And I didn't see Patrick Mahomes play a single snap in college.

But from a talent standpoint (and at the time, a character standpoint) I have absolutely no idea how a QB-starved team looked at Deshaun Watson and was like "nah, we're good.....lets take the safety". That was beyond inexcusable.

My thoughts on Wilson were expressed many times. I think it was a mistake...still do. I dont think he's very good. Would have rather have Lance (despite his rawness) or Fields. Hope to be wrong. Dont think I am. The inability to complete 8 yard routes all last year was a MAJOR red flag to me. The guy was an absolute mess mechanically.

I was all on board with drafting Watson there and even did so in Andy's board mock drafting representing the Jets that year.
