2023 Pittsburgh Steelers. Banged up team loses to Buffalo. Looking ahead to 2024 now (2 Viewers)

It seems way too early to be thinking about the #1 pick overall.
They won't get the #1 overall. I in fact still see them winning 6 games this year.. Atlanta, Carolina, Cleveland at home, Split with Baltimore. Wouldn't shock me if they won this weekend.

Pickett will continue to get better, they have weapons and if Watt comes back, they will be better.
Yup they always seem to get at least 6 wins but at some point they’re due for a complete clunker of a year. This feels like it could be the year. With Watt out, what exactly are their strengths? You know I wouldn’t even be that upset either. A total collapse would allow them to rebuild and they desperately need an infusion of talent. In this era, smart organizations can turn things around fairly quickly. This doesn’t have to be a 5 (or even 3) year rebuild. If Pickett is the guy, they add talent around him and this ship will right itself quickly.

Thankfully I wasn't able to watch the debacle against BUF but I saw the replay of the cheap shot by the BUF defensive lineman and Pickett's reaction - did it remind anyone else of Rudolph/Garrett incident? Getting in people's face is one thing, but punching/grabbing someone's facemask seems really dumb for a QB.

Calling that a punch is pushing it, more of a slap or smack on the head.

Still a dumb thing to do but understandable: the Bills player took an unnecessary cheap shot in a game that had long been over.

With Tomlin seemingly keeping the door open to coaching changes via his post-game comments, can we please fire Canada today and let someone else call the plays and maybe actually use our WRs, not be so predictable, and score a TD in the redzone? K, thanks.

Leeroy I would take any one of us in this thread (including myself) calling the plays over Canada. I don’t know the first thing about schemes, Xs and Os, etc but I did play Super Tecmo Bowl a LOT as a child.

Tomlin should look in the mirror before finding a scapegoat.

I'll say it again, he's not the guy you want for any team in a rebuilding mode. Player development, hiring proper assistants, game planning/scheming, game day coaching including adjustments, etc, are not his strengths at all. He is a motivator, and locker room dancer, who rode a HOF QB that covered up many warts that you now see.

I mean, the Steelers have developed some incredible stars under Tomlin's reign at HC...
  • Big Ben - He was only under Cowher for 3 seasons
  • James Harrison
  • TJ Watt
  • Cam Heyward
  • Antonio Brown
  • Le'Veon Bell
  • Maurkice Pouncey
  • David DeCastro
  • Lawrence Timmons
Can't really give him Troy Polamalu, but he became DPOY during Tomlin's time, not Cowher.

Tomlin has never had to deal with not having a Franchise QB on the roster until now, lets give him at least some time to see what he does.

The Steelers have score 4 TDs in the first quarter over the last 22 games under Matt Canada.

It is early. It was only brought up because right now they’re apparently the favorites.
While we're still not technically out of it I'd like to see us win games, but it doesn't feel like we have a hope of the playoffs. If not, then logically, the highest pick helps the team the most, but losing enough games to pick #1 would be rough.

I still think we win a handful of games and end up closer to pick 8 than pick 1.

Chanting for Kenny seemed to get change to happen faster than people anticipated. Any chance chanting "Run, Run, Pass" would get the play calling to change?

You know what would get play calling to change? Firing Canada! Tomlin sure does put out nice sound bites. He seemed to leave the door open for coaching changes but I doubt he actually follows through with it. You have to be self aware that there is a problem before you're willing to make a change.

Big Ben already had a SB under his belt, and a 5-1 playoff record, which went to 8-9 under coach MT. He also played his best playoff football ever under Cowher in the 2005/2006 playoffs.

Harrison had the great LeBeau as his DC, who was a carry over from Cowher. I'll give DL the credit for making him a star.

TJ is all under Tomlin, so let's give him that. By far his greatest player accomplishment.

Heyward has been awesome as well under Tomlin.

Brown had some great seasons catching passes from a HOF QB, and Tomlin gets credit for keeping AB in check until he finally couldn't anymore.

Bell had 3 great seasons, and became little after. Tomlin gets credit for 3 years of RB contribution.

Pouncey was a great one, and credit to Tomlin.

Decastro was a good find, as was Timmons.

Troy was drafted under Cowher, and developed by DL, so let's not even try there.

After 16 seasons, it's inevitable that some gems will be found, especially with Colbert in tow. That's a pretty small list as accomplishments after so many seasons in the league. Noll and Cowher developed way more, and it's not even debatable.

Cowher went to the playoffs with O'Donnell, Tomczak, Stewart, Maddox, and Ben,.......let that list sink in for awhile.

If we start listing the flops under Tomlin, we will be here for awhile. He has no HOF QB, and lost Colbert as well. He is not the guy you want in a rebuilding/retooling phase. I would LOVE for him to prove me wrong.

DISCLAIMER: I know this post is silly and am not expecting the Steelers to even come close to sniffing the playoffs but here goes...

As awful of a start as is it has been the Steelers are only 2 games behind for the division lead and only 1 game behind Cleveland and Cincinnati. The team is really banged up, especially on defense, and are facing the toughest part of the schedule. I expect them to lose the next 3 and probably badly but if by some miracle they win 2 out of 3 they would be 3-5 going into the bye and presumably healthier with 2 games with Baltimore and 1 each against the Bengals and Browns.

Certainly there is nothing about this team that suggests they could beat the Little Sisters of the Poor right now but hey, nothing is impossible.

So you're saying there's a chance...

This is 100% how to look at the season though. The Steelers could just as easily have won 3 more games (and probably do if Watt plays) and they are within striking distance of the division. These next few weeks could destroy all hope -- but that still is dependent on the other teams in the AFC North.

Pickett looked good. Pickens looks great. The health of the D and lack of depth/pressure from OLBs is killing the team. No clue how you do not address that depth in the off-season. Melvin Ingram last year was a perfect signing and then they saw what happened once he was traded -- need someone behind TJ and HIghsmith that isn't a bum off of the street.

I mean, I put $10 on them to win the division this week, but I also put $10 on them winning the AFC Championship... I'm usually overly optimistic about the Steelers chances.

How it happens: The Steelers get lucky with a few turnovers vs the Bucs and Kenny finally throws some TDs. Najee and the coaching staff finally talk about the obvious, that he's hurt. Warren gets used more and Najee is able to start resting his foot/feet some. Dolphins still without Tua and Teddy leaves the game early again because Miami being watched like a hawk. Now 3-4. Get the doors blown off by the Eagles and our offense looks inept. 3-5.

Fire Matt Canada going into the bye. TJ Watt, Heyward, and Minkah all get healthy. Kazee comes back healthy and is the beast that was advertised in training camp giving us two good safeties and an alright safety. Post-bye Najee is finally healthy again after lower snap counts in the 3 games leading into the bye. He starts running for over 4 yards a carry and has some chunk plays. Coming out of the bye the Steelers hold the Saints to less than 10 pts and win by 21. The Bengals game is close but we lose because the Bengals have the ball last or because we don't convert the final drive, 4-6. Then we play the Colts and Falcons, at this point they're both out of it and aren't tanking but also aren't playing winning football, we smoke them by at least 17 in each game. 6-6.

Then we face the Ravens for the first time this year. Watt destroys and Minkah picks off Lamar giving us a slim win. The Panthers are a joke at this point but Wilks is fighting for a job, so they try hard. The game ends up being closer than we'd like but Pickett to Pickens takes over, Pickens has 2 TDs and we win by a score, 8-6. The Raiders have been eliminated from the playoffs but are playing angry, we beat them by 21 as our offense continues to improve under the surprising play calling of Mike Sullivan. He was not good as an OC with the Giants, but he's calling plays like his job depends on it. Trick plays, 20 yard shots down the middle, anything but Run-Run-Pass against stacked boxes. 9-6.

We end the season against the Ravens and Browns. Our defense has stayed healthy post-bye, and our offense has steadily improved. The Ravens have lost some games heading into the final stretch of the season, but are still leading the division by 2 games. The Bengals have the same record as the Steelers after losses to the Bills and Chiefs. The Browns are slightly behind the Steelers due to losses that piled up in the middle of the season (Pats, Ravens, Bengals, Dolphins, Bills, Bucs). The Steelers start down 14-0 against the Ravens but a splash play bounces their way and Pickett starts to roll, Steelers win on a walk-off Bos FG from 50+ yards out. In week 18 the Bengals are eliminated from the playoffs but want to play spoiler to the Ravens, and we play the Watson lead Browns. Turns out taking more than a year and a half off football isn't good for your skills and Watt dominates Watson as the Browns coaching staff fails to rely on the run game after getting their QB back. The Steelers win by a TD ending the year 11-6 and winning the AFC North.

A delusional fantasy? Yeah, but there's a path!

I BELIEVE.

Apparently Najee has been playing with a steel plate in his shoe due to the lis franc injury. He says he just took it out this week and is now 100% healthy. . . .

Cam Sutton, Witherspoon, Levi Wallace, Minkah, Friermuth and Demarvin Leal are all OUT and of course TJ Watt.

Terrell Edmunds is expected to play

Brady is going to have a field day.

It's scary that Friermuth has now had three concussions in less than 12 months. This last concussion looked bad when it happened.

do the Watt boys ever play NFL games?? ever?! this is ridiculous. maybe they're on PEDs and its leading to constant injuries?it's they should be on disability. so tired of hearing Watt and the words 'injured' or 'out' attached to the name.
Tomlin's time in Pitt has likely come to an end. he's a decent coach, but they have no players to work with outside of Pickens, Pickett, and...who else? Friermuth has to call it a career.his agent needs to advise him you need your brain when you get older. he shouldn't be allowed to come back to Pitt practices as a player anymore. Steelers front office needs to step in here, pay him his due salary, and release him for his own safety.

Go figure. Well, correct so far, not in the how but in the result. 2-4 heading into Miami. Let's see if we can get to the bye 3-5.

That might have been Brady's worst performances I've ever seen.

I enjoyed it thoroughly
Wish I could have seen it. I checked the guide earlier this week and the game was going to be on here (Philly), and then I sit on my couch and put it on and I am getting Jets-Packers instead. Fox must have switched it after all of the injuries.

Seemed like Godwin was the only reliable connection...I wonder what's going on with Mike Evans.

Brady just didn't seem to be challenging anything deep very often. Given that little fit he had on his OL right before the half, I assume they weren't giving him the time he expected. His YPA this week was barely over 6. On the year, so far, it's down almost a full yard over his career numbers, fwiw.

Seems like he just isn't taking as many shots downfield in general in 2022 <shrug>. The lack of deeper stuff would almost certainly effect Evans more than Godwin.

Steelers front 4 without Watt we’re getting pressure. Back end didn’t allow anything deep and the middle linebackers did a nice job. Was a cohesive unit.
Brady got frustrated and we got a sound byte of him cursing out his entire OL.

Offense actually mixed up play calls. Very little Run Run Pass Punt. Best drives included passes down the middle of the field. Pittsburgh WR stepped up their game and finally scored their first TD of the season. Thanks Claypool.

Any chance Watt is back for the Philly game?
"Sources" said that the knee procedure he got done will delay his return 1-2 weeks, so it sounds like after the bye is more likely.

I'd rather give him an extra 2 weeks of rest than have him come back at 80-90% for 1 game. Just feels risky when our best chances at wins come post-bye.

They have to start Trubisky now right?
Until Pickett is healthy. He played an excellent quarter and a half, same with Claypool. But until we see more that's definitely the exception, not the rule.
Sounds like they may ride with Mitch according to Dulac.

Tomlin will never give Pickett a fair shot tbh, it will be like Blackledge with KC, as soon as he makes a mistake or has a bad game he will be benched as it sounds like Mitch can win the starting job back this week.
