2023 Pittsburgh Steelers. Banged up team loses to Buffalo. Looking ahead to 2024 now (3 Viewers)

If we got simpson, that would have been a damn near perfect 4 picks imo. Not sure why we made that trade to move so far down when these guys were there.

Could be Washington or Ringo.

Washington is beyond a meh pick to me. Antiquated thinking. They aint winning this divsion playing "Cowher Ball."

Rather have stayed put and taken Simpson.
I generally agree, but that was really true when people were talking about taking him at 32. At 93, he is a good value. Even getting a role player at 93vis fine

Id prefer they not want to settle for "fine." But whatever, hes a Steeler. Hopefully he blocks some chode on Baltimore into orbit.

Still some very good CBs and Edge guys out there. Wouldnt hate either of those at 132.

Reality is the steelers offense is so bad, had to do something. Kenny isn't close to Joe Burrow talent. Gonna play a bunch of Canada ball and manage clock. Look for the team to develop a power run game with WR screens, RPO and Calvin Austin jet sweeps. At least there will be better talent in the OL and a massive blocking TE. A-Rob can block well. Try to limit Kenny having to make plays while he develops.

Washington gets to be a 6th lineman who can occasionally run routes on play action.
Broderick still scares me at OT. Hope I'm wrong.

JPJ and Benton are great picks. Need to pay Harrison without a top QB on the payroll. Defense is going to have to carry the team until the offense figures out how to score.

Gonna need to reach for a LB at 132.

Hope his knee ok.
Really not a lot worth reaching for will be around, likely.

Of everyone left at off-ball LB, Sewell is probably who I like "best"...and he isnt a total prize himself.
Will see who is left I guess.

I would take:

- KJ Henry
- To’oTo’o
- Sewell
- Herbig
- Carter II
- Robert Beal (reach)
What about QB? Might be a good spot to draft a draft a guy like Dorian Thompson-Robinson. I realize he wasn't on the list for visits, but his play style translates to Pittsburgh.

I am interested in Herbig or Carter. I would also be interested in Pace

I saw Porter in PSU games but for the rest I can say I did not watch them play a single down. They look good from the footage they showed after each were picked but after all they are highlight reels.

In light of that I am going to defer to the Steelers scouts if these guys are good and fit with the roles they have in mind for them.

The Steelers seem to getting good value based on the pre-draft rankings and are also addressing needs.

The draft isn’t over yet and it will be a couple of years before we can evaluate the 2023 draft but so far I like what they’ve done.

Hopefully one is there in 30 picks.

Canada has a lot of pieces now for various formations. Let’s see how smart he is.

i assume heyward will line up more at H-back. Wonder what short yardage looks like though without Watt.

This draft couldn't really have gone much better. We move up for the last of the good OTs right in front of the Jets who were 100% going to take him. Then we get the guy at 32 that many people would have been happy with at 17.

Lots of us were high on Benton and I'm glad we got him at 49. Some think he doesn't have enough pass rush potential, but I think he showed at the senior bowl that with the right coaching that pass rushing is definitely a possibility for him. He is going to learn from one of the best right next to him and I think he has the upside to be Hargrave-esque.

The Washington pick is the most divisive, but he was mocked to us at 49, or even 32, so I'm much happier taking him at 93 (obviously). For me, he's a player who has a lot of upside but also a high floor. His floor is basically a swing tackle who can take off and run routes. For better or worse the AFC North is still about smash mouth football and Washington should help improve our running game. Also, he played on the same offense as the best TE in the NCAA, I think he has the chance to improve his pass catching in the NFL from where he was in college.

After the Jones and Porter Jr picks, the rest of the draft feels like playing with house money. If you told me pre-draft we're going to use our 1st and 4th to move up for Jones and both of our 2nd round picks to move up for Porter Jr, I would have been happy with that. They both should be high quality starters. Getting JPJ at 32 still feels unreal.

This draft is full of players that graded out as special teamers or players who might pan out as backups. I think we can solidly say that we probably got at least 3 players so far that will be starters by the end of this season at the latest. Benton might be behind Fehoko to start the season but I have confidence he'll bypass him.

The Steelers are the 30th pick today, but there's still a lot of talent left. I hope we don't trade down again because I think after the 4th we're mostly looking at lottery picks and special teamers. This draft just isn't as strong as other recent ones.

Players to watch:
  • Adetomiwa Adebawore OLB - Decent pass rusher, a bit surprised at the fall.
  • Dawand Jones OT - After a while he becomes a value even if he isn't highly motivated.
  • Clark Phillips III CB - Slot CB, fills a need in our defense.
  • Henry To'oTo'o ILB - Still need depth at ILB, but maybe the Steelers are more confident in their top 3 ILBs and thus why they passed on Simpson.
  • Darius Rush CB - Double dipping wouldn't be surprising, and he was a top 30 visit.
  • Chandler Zavala IOL - Another top 30 visit but Guard doesn't appear to be as big a need based on our FA signings this and last year.
  • Blake Freeland OT - Another position we could double dip at.
  • Antonio Johnson S/Nickel CB
  • Nick Herbig LB
  • Tyler Scott WR - A smaller but speedy WR, it would be surprising if the Steelers didn't add a WR at some point.
  • Luke Wypler C - Do you really want to be 1 injury away from Kendrick Green starting at Center?

If we trade down in the 4th, I wonder if we might take a look at Andrew Vorhees, the talented guard from USC who tore his ACL during the combine. Our backup Guards are Dotson and Herbig and one has 1 year left and one has 2 years on his contract. We're going to need more guard depth behind Daniels and Seumalo.

Henry, Herbig, Carter, and/or Beal are my hopes.

Vorhees is a good call for IR and depth next year.

Oluwatimi could be a steal.

Karl Brooks could be a nice addition in the middle of dline too.

I think these are my happy targets today.

Boutte still there at WR, too.

Beyond the 4th, still some late targets at WR that could fill a role theyre currently lacking...

Bell
Nacua
DuBose
Ford-Wheaton...who i dont dig, but they brought in for a visit.

If Benton is viewed as more of a 5-tech, there's still a couple pure NG types that could be around late for a flyer...Clark, maybe Coburn.

My hope is they double dip at CB in 4, but i dont expect it. Think theyll go Edge...or reach for a LB. I expect QB to be considered at each remaining pick, too. They roll with 4 in camp and currently only have two under contract.

Looks like we have our pick of LBs here
