2024-25 NBA Thread: ESPN ready to debate if Warriors blowing 3-1 lead to meager Rockets diminishes LeBron’s legacy (109 Viewers)

If you had to rank the West right now by tier. I would go like this, not in any order in the actual tiers.

Tier one - OKC
Tier two- LAL, Golden State
Tier three - Houston, Denver, Minnesota
Tier four - LAC
Tier five - Memphis
Tier six - the other three teams that could be in the play-in
Good list. I’d probably put Denver in tier two and Clippers in tier three if I were ranking them.
Clippers with Kawhi are really good.

Probably, but when is the last time he made through a playoff run? 2019

What a huge defensive game from Lakers to hold OKC under 100.

Part of me thinks that OKC is easing off the gas the past few games with the Conference clearly in hand. I guess they should be motivated to clinch best record overall but doubt they want to show much to other Western playoff opponents.

I had Denver in the second tier until Kev's post the other day. He knows them better than anyone and it made me drop them a tier.
They suck right now. And Jamal Murray might not be back at the start of the playoffs.

So the Wolves don't play, the two teams immediately above them in the standings lose, and they drop from the 6 seed to the 7 seed.
It’s crazy. Right now, the 4-8 seeds in the West all have 32 losses (Denver 47 wins, everyone else 46) with only 3 or 4 games left. Time to start looking up all the tiebreakers.

Amen is definitely an elite defender, will be DPOY for multiple years. But, Steph gets zero whistle. Constantly being held, grabbed, hacked, fouled, etc. Yes, there are the uncalled moving screen violations by the Dubs too, but a player of Steph's magnitude deserves more calls. This isn't just an observation about last night's game, it's league-wide, career long.

Crazy how the 5th-8th spots are all tied.

Counterpoint - he has Draymond Green on his team.

Yeah, I would trade calling more fouls/techs on Day Day, if it meant Steph was getting more calls

Instead of looking at the crazy playoff standings and seedings, let’s look at the incredible tanking going on at the bottom of the standings. The bottom 8 teams are putting on a masterclass of futility. Here are their most recent records and how they look if you take out their wins against other bottom 8 teams.

Utah - 1-19, (0-19 excluding bottom 8 wins)
Was - 2-10, (1-10)
Cha - 5-20, (2-20)
NO - 5-14, (2-14)
Phi - 3-26, (2-26)
Bkn - 5-19, (3-19)
SA - 6-12, (3-12)
Tor - 9-8, (0-8) - their schedule down the stretch has been hilariously easy

I actually thought of an idea to help with tanking. Give additional ping pong balls for wins the last 20 games of the year. I didn't think it all the way out, so I am sure there are some kinks, but an additional ball for a win against a playoff team, two balls for a win against non playoffs team and scale it so it would make roughly the same difference that moving up a spot or two would make.

My anti-tanking idea is if a team doesn’t win at least 33% of their games, they get thrown in at the end of the lottery.

I could go with that with a couple of tweaks. Have an season ending injury clause lower it to 30 percent which is 24.6 games and round it to 25.

Lakers potentially looking to give up tomorrow’s game at OKC (basically everyone is listed as questionable) so they can have everyone active for Wednesdays game at Dallas.

Seems like a bit of a gamble to give up a game with only 4 left with how close the standings are, even if another win in OKC is a serious long shot.

The injuries listed are really magnificent.

Less important, but looking more likely that Detroit will be the 6 seed, which IMO is not where you wanna be.

I think the top 4 seeds in the East roll in the first round. Didn't matter if the Pistons were 5th or 8th.

Agreed but it might be interesting that the Bucks and Pistons play the final two games of the season against each other- April 11 in Detroit and 13th in Milwaukee. I wonder whether either team will care.

I think all the teams in the West should give up all their games except for one.

I like how there's an entire Basketball Forum but this is in Free For All. 😅
I assume this thread gets more posts.
I haven't stepped foot into the basketball forum in a couple years. Last I did, it was a ghost town.

I didn't even know such a thing existed
I looked - there has been like a dozen posts in two years.
I think one year we did some form of NBA draft, I put polling for whatever matchups or rankings we were doing over there. Pretty sure that was the most activity that forum ever had. I think it was one of the all-time drafts we did.

Kind of a chicken and egg situation.
"Why are all the basketball threads in the Free For All?"
"Because nobody goes to the Basketball Forum."
"Why doesn't anyone go to the Basketball Forum?"
"Because all the basketball threads are in the Free For All."

I just went scrolling through the forum - @Yogibear was calling Jokic the MVP in the fall of '19. What a genius.

Crazy comment I saw online:

“With the exception of Steve Kerr, all championship winning head coaches between 2020-2023 have been fired within two years of winning the championship.”

Is Joe Mazzulla next?

Unless Jokic walked into the owner’s office and asked for it I dunno why you wouldn’t just wait

Please address the Celtics coach properly . . . All-Time Winningest Head Coach in League History, Joe Mazzulla. He's at .740. Some guy named Phil Jackson is second at .704. I don't see the Celtics moving away from Mazzulla anytime soon as the math still works, but they likely will have to make several roster moves this offseason to get underneath the second apron. Then we'll see if Mazzulla ball is as effective.
