2024-25 NBA Thread: New Pope shocks world in opening statement by asking why Bulls gave Patrick Williams all that money (103 Viewers)

Knecht and Reaves getting the same haircut before the game made things a bit confusing (messed up the announcers a few times too).

Nowadays, it's quite an oddity having two white Americans on the same team playing a significant role. They're a dying breed in the NBA.
Cavaliers - Strus, Merrill, Wade
Celtics - Pritchard, Hauser, Kornet
Bucks - Lopez, Connaughton
Heat - Herro, Robinson

Oof

Significant players btw

OKC was the only team that immediately came to mind but with Chet out kind of nixed that thought....and Giddey is a bloody Aussie, mate

The Europeans are slowly but surely taking over. Crazy how much has changed in 20 years.

Crikey!

The New Orleans Pelicans played 9 guys tonight. Without looking, see if you can name one.
 Funny you mentioned that.

I randomly looked at their box score the game before tonight's game [want to say that game was against the Mavs] because of their record. I think I recognized Brandon Ingram in that game. Only reason I'd have a clue about anything regarding their current players Is because I saw that previous box score. Maybe Trey Murphy played? [Hell maybe Troy Murphy is playing for them at this point]. I think Brandon Boston was another going off a fading memory. Just comical looking at their box score and who they're down to. No shot I'd have been able to name one.

We're 14 games into the season and already they're down Zion/Herb Jones/McCollum/Dejounte Murray.

There’s no way Elfrid Payton is starting an nba game tonight.
I was thinking that I didn't even remember him in the league last year so I was surprised to hear that he is in the league this year... He hasn't played in an NBA game since 2022. The Pels have been completely destroyed by injuries this year.

Payton blocking his own shot with his hair is one of my favorite basketball moments ever.

Remember when the bulls traded for Josh Giddey? That was awesome
turned that game on in time to see Giddey on a controlled break, no one around him at the FT line so he pulls up.... to wait for a teammate so he could dish the ball off instead of taking a wide-open jumper.

Doris was appalled

:lmao: I’ll never forget that. One of those moments with the magic where I thought, I don’t have to watch this anymore.

Not sure what the old record was, but Boston has set the record for most made three pointers over a 15-game stretch with 287. They are averaging 19.1 made threes a game (league average is 13.4). They have made 2.6 more 3P per game compared to last year. By comparison, the 1987-88 Celtics led the league in made three pointers that season. They made 271.

Between last year and this year, they are 20-0 when making 20 3P. Going back 5 seasons, they are 45-5.

Everyone loved it when it was the Splash Brothers. Now that its JT, JB, White, Holiday, Horford, PP, Hauser & (soon to be) KP, people think it is a fluke or bad basketball.

I think the underrated/unheralded person through all of this is Joe Mazzulla. Guy is a savant and his press conferences are consistently the most intentionally funny events around. I've never seen a more focused and driven human in my life.

Splash Brothers was only 2 players

You need 7.5 to even get close to that

Please. I'll start with Nadal...and many others who are actually in the arena.

Surpassed it, chief.

And it was 3 with Jordan Poole to beat Boston in 2022, until they decided to let the worst human in the NBA punch his face in and gave him a slap on the wrist for it.

Oh for sure - if it was the Lakers making all the threes I’d be praising how they are leading the evolution of the game, and if it was the Celtics with only one player able to make threes a I’d be laughing at them for the dinosaurs that they are.

But team biases aside, I’m not a fan of this extreme variation of the 3>2 game and think an adjustment needs to be made (pushing the 3 point line out, removing the corner 3, banishing the Celtics from the league).

If it works and the shots fall, it is very successful. If it doesn’t work, it’s horrible to watch.

Side bar: my fix for the all-star game is to eliminate threes and dunks.

I haven’t been impressed with Josh Giddey at all. He’s a good passer but he doesn’t provide much else.

It’s funny that he asked OKC to trade him because they wanted him to be a bench player but the Bulls are already benching him for Ayo at the end of close games. There was talk before the season of him wanting $30 million a year but I’d rather see him walk than pay even half of that.

It's not as if this is ISO james Harden type of three ball. It is pick n roll, drive and kick, complex actions to get guys good, if not great looks from three. I don't find it horrible to watch even if they are missing so long as they are executing their offense

I would say the bigger difference is the three point shooters are better Trevor Ariza and PJ Tucker. Harden's threes weren't aways great shots, but everybody else was taking drive and kick threes and Harden is one of the best ever (the best ever?) inside out passers and he put the ball right where they needed to get off quick shots.

I'll die on the hill that James Harden's peak was in the conversation of the best half dozen or so offensive peaks of all time and the Rockets' offense was creating soooo many easy looks for the tertiary players because of his skillset.

Ham and egger

the bucks are back to 6 and 9 and in tenth place watch out despite having two of the best players in the league they just might make a run at the 8 spot take that to the bank brochachos

0-1 this season (on the parquet, no less), kemosabe

Oh yeah, that’s the good side of things. When it’s Cam Reddish pulling up for three on a 3 on 1 fast break it’s not so fun.

Knecht and Reaves getting the same haircut before the game made things a bit confusing (messed up the announcers a few times too).

Nowadays, it's quite an oddity having two white Americans on the same team playing a significant role. They're a dying breed in the NBA.
Cavaliers - Strus, Merrill, Wade
Celtics - Pritchard, Hauser, Kornet
Bucks - Lopez, Connaughton
Heat - Herro, Robinson

Oof

Wolves - DiVincenzo, Garza (who I saw in the Minneapolis skyway yesterday and said hi to)

He was pretty awesome (in the regular season).

One of my best friends named his kid Luka after Luka Garza. Luka Garza also does Cameos. I'm amazed that he is liked enough by anybody for either of those two things to be true.

He's the 3rd best PG on the Bulls IMO.

Lonzo will never be a FT player again but he's still better on both ends than Giddey.

Giddey at $30m/yr (or anything close to it) is worse than Lavine's contract

I agree with half of $30m/yr being the top end of what to pay him annually. And I think you're paying that hoping he gets more well rounded with age

I didn't mind the Bulls giving him a shot as Caruso didn't have a long term future with Bulls. I almost fell outta my chair when I read he wanted $30m annually

Franz Wagner!!!!!

I missed the game but that 3 to win it was cold. Helluva stat line as well. Looks like his brother Hans is playing some ball as well. Definitely not the Antetokounmpo bros.
Magic fans are finally blessed. 2 stars and a deep roster around them. Been a while waiting since the Dwightmare.

The injury to Banchero might be a blessing in disguise. Franz is bossing up and probably giving him the confidence to still be that guy when Paolo gets back.

Seems to be working out that way. Maybe he needed a few months as the top dog.
