2024 College Football Thread: Ohio State advances to play unbeaten hypothetical SEC team (2 Viewers)

I do NOT want Ohio State again, but that's coming I'm sure.
I think this is inevitable. I don't see OSU losing to IN, nor do I see ORE losing the rest of the way. It'll be ORE vs OSU in Indy for the B1G championship. I think a neutral field in Indy will be a difference maker in this game. Autzen is a crazy atmosphere and definitely worthy of points for that home field advantage. Take that away and I think OSU will be on the other side of a close game. What will be interesting is the playoff seedings after this game. There is a chance of a 3rd meeting on another neutral field in the playoffs. That could be the rubber match for all the marbles.

I think this will be a fun back and forth series this year for these two teams, and definitely setting up for a good rivalry in the B1G for years to come.

I'm sure your instincts are correct but I'm going to be a massive Hoosiers fan for one day in a couple weeks. Even though my alma sucks this year I am unexpectedly enjoying the new super-sized Big Ten conference season.
Understandable. I was huge Hoosier fan last weekend. It's definitely been a fun season across all of CFB compared to years past.

Huge Boise fan the rest of the way.

Coworker's son got an invite to watch the BSU/NEV game last weekend - a few of his teammates joined him. I'd love it if BSU offered him (he's a junior, but plays with the Oregon Offensive Player of the Year at LO who DOES have an offer from BSU among other schools) so I'm rooting for 'em too (well, not when they play Oregon, but I know why you root for them. ;))

We were talking about the big difference to our budgets if we don't win in Indy and end up hosting a first round game at Autzen. I'm sure tickets, even directly through U of O, will be expensive as hell. Not sure if our parking pass will cover that game or we'll have to pay again. Tailgate costs.

But it would be fun to host any of the schools not named Boise St, just because been-there-done-that.

Travel could get out of control in this new model as well. This year a Duck fan could conceivably go to Indy, Pasadena, Miami, and Atlanta in like a 6 week period. Flights, hotels, game tickets, it could get crazy. It's why I've already ruled out going to Indy, I'd rather save those dollars for whatever might come next.

Nothing and I mean NOTHING compares to the fan turnout of Ohio State.
I'd do the old "fix" thing and alter your post, but apparently that's frowned upon here now (at least the last time I did it).
Instead, I'll suggest you change your own post to:

Nothing and I mean NOTHING I've personally seen compares to the fan turnout of Ohio State.

Because clearly you've never been to Penn State. From the tailgates though the game, Ohio State is at best a very distant second.

Going to a game at PSU is a fantastic experience (or so I've heard). I'll agree the environment between an OSU home game and a PSU home game (when there are top matchups) aren't comparable. OSU home crowds seem very lowkey to most other environments. I will say that the OSU crowd does tend to travel well, which I think is what GM is referencing.

Well, Penn State is my top destination for an away game for the Ducks and I have no doubt you are accurate here, but I meant fans that travel to road games or Bowl games.

For example, the 2015 NC game between Oregon/OSU in Dallas was easily 4:1 ratio of fans. Rose Bowl 2010 maybe 3:1. This past game in Eugene was a sea of red everywhere I went and I've never seen that before a Ducks' home game. Nothing even comes close.

Did you go to the Nebraska game in 2017? I did and I actually think there may have been more Nebraska fans that game than Ohio State fans this year. Don't get me wrong there were probably 10,000 Ohio State fans in Autzen but I would guess there were slightly more Nebraska fans in 2017. Both those games you could really notice the red though.

I was in Austin this past weekend when the Florida Gators were in town. I noticed a TON of Florida fans milling around Thursday night and Friday morning before the game.

I'd say it was 50/50 between UT fans and UF fans at the bier garten I ended up watching the game at. I considered scalping a ticket, but StubHub was saying they were $200+ so I doubt I was going to get much cheaper on the street. I was by myself and didn't wanna sit up the nosebleeds alone. I've been to plenty of UT games (where I had killer seats) so I just used the $100 or whatever on beers and cocktails at the bier garten and had a blast. Met a ton of cool UF fans, hung out the entire game, made "instant friends"

Austin is definitely a "destination" and with UT being new to the SEC, fans of teams like Florida flock to Austin to watch the game and party all weekend. It was an absolute blast.

We will be joyously tailgating the Bama game in Norman - will be intrigued to see how Bama travels to a nowhere destination like Norman

I sold my tickets to that game for $$$$$ to a Nebraska fan my parents knew from church. He wrote me a thank you note after I ripped him off and his team lost by 40. :lmao:

Yeah, Nebraska does travel well too, you're right.

Right, I think I fear a few teams this year and Ohio State leads that pack. Alabama scares me too and I suppose Georgia, though their QB leads all of FBS with 12 picks, so.....until or unless he fixes that, he's going to be a big problem for Georgia. A neutral field will favor all those schools, especially Ohio State. Having watched the Ducks/Bucks play 3 times now, that school shows up unlike any other I've ever witnessed*

*I've never experienced Bama/Georgia/Texas et al but I've seen Michigan/Oregon and I've seen USC/Oregon a number of times. Nothing and I mean NOTHING compares to the fan turnout of Ohio State.
When I've been to Bama/Georgia/Florida/etc they are comparable in terms of passion and being LOUD during the game. Maybe even louder. However, if you're talking about pure number of people who will show up, nobody competes with Ohio State. They will dwarf every single fan base on a neutral site. The only ones close are the other midwest schools like Penn St and Michigan.

Totally blown call in ND game.

Returner waves for a fair catch. Ball bounces off him and into a coverage team member's hands. Should have been fair catch interference. Kicking team cannot touch the ball on a fair catch until it hits the ground.

Horrible job by officials not knowing the rules.

And Virginia immediately fumbles it back.

I hate the saying "ball don't lie".

But, ball don't lie. ;)

This booth referee makes no sense on how the ND fake punt was illegal

He "explained" it and I still have no idea

Yeah seems fairly straightforward

"Item 3. Muff. After a valid fair-catch signal, the opportunity to catch a kick does not end if the ball is muffed. The player who signaled for a fair catch must have a reasonable opportunity to catch the muffed ball before it hits the ground without interference by members of the kicking team, and regardless of whether the ball strikes another player or an official.

Penalty: For interference with the opportunity to make a fair catch after a muff: A fair catch is awarded at the spot of the interference even if the ball is not caugh"t.

Another horrible call by the ACC refs in the ND/UVA game. Illegal formation callled to bring a TD back on a legal formation.

Another week, another bunch of crock calls from conference refs (no surprise ACC again).

Near as I can tell, if you are in a scrimmage formation your 5 linemen have to be numbers 50 to 79. A punt formation they don't have to. There's no "reporting eligible" like in the NFL.

Assuming that's the rule, looks like the officials got it right. But it's a stupid rule to take a gorgeous play like that away. So you basically can't do a fake punt with someone moving under center unless you use your offensive lineman? That's just dumb.

Two 70+ yard touchdowns taken off the board this series.

Pretty sure there’s next to zero chance any official has ever called it before too. We’d have to believe they all know that rule apparently exists and then count each 50+ number every single punt scenario.

They always find the most obscure crap to call against ND. It’s pretty hilarious the random rules never heard from that find their way into ND games.

Is it just me or was that targeting on the interception? Guy's tied up being tackled and O-lineman throws a shoulder right into the crown of his head where it could compress the neck.

At worst helmet to helmet should have been called, but you’re right.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen it called on an offensive player but it’s especially weird since after an interception, the offensive players are now the defenders. It should be called the same as if he were a DL in that situation.

I’m at least grateful we’re finally seeing emotion from Freeman in this game. He’s all over these refs on behalf of his guys.

Ok What does that have to do with the play if they are lined up to punt?

He was wrong. The assumption is Kiser took the snap under center. If he had, he’d have been right. Kiser was a yard back, so his read of the rule is wrong.

Right on cue, the refs rule a dropped catch a pass. They’re doing all they can to keep Virginia in the game. BD needs to send this tape to the ACC and tell them their refs are no longer welcome.

Remember when I warned LSU fans? I like you guys. Drop that bum Big Game BK.

He’s going to go to his presser now and choose which players to throw under the bus. If only they’d executed his flawless game plan.

If I was recruiting against him I’d just show the kid a 5 minute video loop of him screaming at his players on the sideline.

Not a big deal but Oregon continues to find the worst uniform combinations to wear. Silver & black neither part of the school colors. Meanwhile their green & yellow is among the best. But I digress.

Brian Kelley will get fired because LSU is convinced their 2019 team is where they should be forever but who do they go get? Dan Lanning?

Wait, no.

TN WRs complaining about not having heaters for a 55 degree game. Oh boy.

I hope they don't have to go to a Big Ten team in the first round of the playoff.

Who is the idiot announcer on NBC basically saying Wisconsin should sit on the ball with 2 and half minutes so they don't make a mistake.

Little nervous about this Oregon/Wisconsin game. Feel like this could be a potential "trap" or "overlook" game and it's on the road, which is always a little daunting. Just want to get through this one and then I'm going to bask in glory when Coach Dan exorcises all demons against the Fuskies and beats them by 55.

I do NOT want Ohio State again, but that's coming I'm sure.

Good posting. I should listen to you more.
