2025-26 NBA Thread: NBA fan tries for 14th time to remember Peacock password (9 Viewers)

ESPN’s Shams Charania reports the Kings have extended Keegan Murray on a five-year, $140 million contract.
I’m sorry is this not crazy to anybody else
A 4 who can defend and shoot and is 25 years old and never misses games for 16% of the cap is not crazy. Also might bot all be guaranteed, though it is bartelstein, so he probably got it all
Simmons nailed it today when he called it a Patrick Williams contract. Lot of money for a guy who is just a guy.
Keegan Murray has done ten times what Williams had done when he got that contract
What am I missing here? I know PER isn’t the end all/be all but he’s had 3 seasons of PER that were 12.4, 13.3 and 12. League average player is like 15. My point is a bad team is committing a decent amount of money to what is likely not even a league average starter.
Pretty much the going rate for a player like murray. Keep in mind if they don't want to pay him it's not like they suddenly have $28 million to pay someone else. It's more like pay Murray or throw that money away.

I lean towards this take. I don’t see much of a difference between a guy like Nickeil Alexander walker and Keegan Murray. Nickeil got 4 years 60 million dollars from the Hawks. If Keegan Murray is worth 5 year 140 million—the league better raise the salary cap exponentially. Don’t get me wrong—I’m not slamming Keegan. He’s a fine player and I hope he makes his money—but this screams overpay to me.

That Wemby step through from just inside the arc. How do guys even guard that?
I feel like he makes at least one mind-blowing play every game. He’s not even all that close when he goes up but he can basically get to that finger roll distance from anywhere inside the 3 pt line because his arms are so damn long. I think they are gonna finish top 5 in the West this year

Counterargument - Jaden McDaniels signed a 5/131 contract two years ago. Andrew Wiggins is on a 4/109 contract. DeAndre Hunter is on a 4/90 contract. Mikal Bridges just signed 4/150.

Big wings that can defend and shoot (YMMV) get paid. I don't think the Murray contract is a good deal BUT it's not a bad contract.

The Christian Braun contract that might be coming is going to be the bad one.

I guess my point is, how does this help the Kings become anything? I honestly feel like they should just strip it down and go for broke in the draft again. God their fans must be in hell.

I get that point, but being a “type” of player doesn’t mean that there aren’t different levels to be that prototypical type. I don’t think Keegan Murray can sniff Jaden McDaniels or Mikal Bridges. I don’t know if Keegan Murray has played any impactful basketball like Jaden or Mikal have. When Mikal was traded to the Nets in the KD deal, he was legit putting up all star numbers. Wiggins got contracts on the basis that he’s also a teams second or third offensive option. Out of the players you mentioned, I think the closest “comp” would be Deandre Hunter—and 4 years 90 million is a lot easier to pallet than 5 years 140 million. Just my opinion.

They are retaining a nice young player at a premium position on a reasonable contract. He should be around long enough to be on the next iteration or two of this team or they shouldn't have a problem trading him unless he faceplants this season. I guess they could have put the screws to him and made him go through restricted agency to wring every dollar they could have out of the contract, but the associated drama hardly seems worth it given what he signed for.

For these non-max future restricted free agents, the case can certainly be made that the best course of action is for the team to use their leverage to try to get a below market deal after free agency starts. If the player is truly agreeing to a security for money discount in an extension that’s different, but that is rarely happening.

There were zero offer sheets signed this off-season and there have been very few over the last handful of years. There are more teams expected to have cap space next offseason but the risk for the team feeling forced to match an above market offer is low.

I know the worry can be about pissing off the player but that can be managed. Players quickly learn it’s a business too.

KD extends 2/90 with a player option. Obviously his age adds some uncertainty, but another pretty good piece of business by McNair to get him well below his max

whatchu talking bout Willis?
Derp, Stone. I always associate those guys together from their time in Houston and somehow got my wires crossed

I agree with your point though. He's done a good job of locking these guys up and not overpaying to keep the core nucleus together.
