2025-26 NBA Thread: Pelicans fan dismayed team not involved in gambling scandal, they are just actually this bad (5 Viewers)

So Pablo has Bob Voulgaris on the pod today...made 8-10 million a year for 15-17 years (I'm guessing that's lowballed) gambling on the NBA (a large percentage of that was betting Jerry Sloan, Utah first half unders). Used Blitzarian (which makes a ton of sense in retrospect) as one of his beards. Bob thinks both the NBA and to a lesser extent the NFL are in trouble if they don't get away from a W-L based draft (lotteries) since you can't tell draft tanking from gambling tanking.
I googled that and got nowhere. Would love to hear more about this. Jerry Sloan being a large percentage is interesting. Were there any sort of implications with the Sloan angle? I'd guess hard no, and if there actually was anything, it's gotta be far, far underneath the NBA rug, but have to ask. Up to 200 million? What made him stop?

I know nothing about pro gamblers but that seems like a ton. Wow. And for such an extended period. How did he not get cut off? How much did it cost to run that kind of outfit, and how'd he keep it going, etc? Wild.

re: Utah. I guess home (maybe it was road) NBA teams get to decide which basket they want to defend first. Almost all teams choose to defend the basket by their bench in the second half. Utah/Sloan (and two others at the time in the early 00s) did the opposite and defended the basket in front of their bench first. Turns out that the PPG rate for being in front of your coach is a good 10-12 PPG lower than the other way around. For whatever reason, sportbooks at the time didn't really adjust and when they caught on, didn't adjust enough. So it was basically free money by betting first half Utah home unders. So much so that for each home game, the betting logic tells you to basically risk most of your bankroll each game.

Bob's biggest issue was finding people to bet for him. At some point he met Blitzarian who had some account in the UK that didn't get shutdown and basically generated a large portion of his gains. Bob said at one point they started to shade the Utah lines down a touch, but it was still not enough and that they had to bet some still positive EV overs for the book to not do anything (I won't same "catch on" as I wouldn't be surprised if there were other shenanigans happening). Bob thinks they eventually got found out when his old dog appeared on Dan's brother's IG feed by accident. Used Floyd (who Bob thinks does this for a bunch of professionals) for a day.

He basically got burned out trying to find folks to bet for him. He said that part ends up being most of the work.

He's also a pretty accomplished poker player and didn't have much sympathy for the pros taken by Billups games. He has a couple of crazy stories about folks cheating in a casino nevermind in a home game. Said he would only play home games if he could take the cards after it was over.
