2025 College Football Thread: FSU loses to Stanford in battle of academic powers (24 Viewers)

GM'S TOP 20 Sept. 15, 2025

1. Miami - Don't worry, it won't last. Two wins over ranked opponents put 'em here. Let's see if they can remain on top. For now, I'm buying in.
2. Ohio State - Punished here for 2 cupcakes after squeaking by a Texas team I don't think is very good anymore.
3. Penn State - They haven't played anybody yet. Get a bye before hosting Oregon. Can we make it ANY easier for this team?
4. Georgia - That was a very impressive comeback in Tennessee. Kept their composure walked away victorious when it looked like Tennessee was the better team for much of that game.
5. LSU - Why is Brian Kelley so angry all the time? I'd rank them higher, but he just rubs me the wrong way, so sit here for a week, Coach. You're going to have a heart attack living like this.
6. Florida State - Idle and then Kent State and Virginia. They should be 4-0 before hosting Miami in an enormous ACC match-up. Just like the halcyon days of yore!
7. Oregon - I don't think the Ducks like 9am PT games. Northwestern shot themselves in the foot early and was running all over Oregon late. Lanning has a lot to clean up from this one.
8, Oklahoma - I'm jumping them ahead of others because I think they have the Heisman winner under center this year. Special players elevate teams.
9. Texas A&M - Had no business winning that game but they did it. Marcel Reed throwing his hat in the ring for Heisman too.
10. Illinois - Their best win is over Duke? Feels like fools gold to me. We'll know more about them with games against Indiana and USC looming.
11. Iowa State - It ain't always pretty but they're the only 4-0 team in the nation. Game against Arizona at home should tell us more. Arizona is 3-0 and very under the radar.
12. Ole Miss - 2-0 in SEC play and a very tough game against 3-0 Tulane this weekend. Win that and their reward is LSU. GAWD. The SEC is alligator Alcatraz.
13. Georgia Tech - I don't know how much longer Haynes King can play like this. I wince every time he takes off. 3-0 with wins over Clemson and Coach Prime. Take your flowers.
14. Utah - Just beating the brakes off of teams. Not good teams, but teams. Big game this week against.....
15. Texas Tech - They spent more than any other B12 school and now it's paying off. Will the good times roll on in Lubbock? Utah's coming and this should be a very fun game.
16. Alabama - Writing them off early was probably unwise. ENORMOUS game against Georgia Sept. 27.
17. Tennessee - Woulda, coulda, shoulda. Their kicker looked terrified on the sidelines. How they rebound will be everything. Easy sledding up coming. Get right game.
18. Michigan - I have a feeling this team is going to be dangerous as Underwood develops.
19. Indiana - Finally play a real team this weekend and we'll know more about both Indiana and Illinois after this one.
20. Vanderbilt - There were a few schools in the running for the final spot but a 31-7 win over ranked South Carolina vaults Vanderbilt over the others in consideration. Should be 5-0 before Bama.

Dropping out:

Texas -
This is why we should blindly ignore pre-season polls. This team isn't deserving of a top 10 ranking. I am not even giving them a top 20 ranking. After losing to Ohio State, Texas went San Jose State, UTEP and will take on Sam Houston State. That's ridiculous. No points from me. QB looks lost. Red River Shootout is their first chance to impress again, although Florida is first.
USC - Sorry BB, this probably isn't fair. I felt like Vanderbilt had the better Saturday. Michigan State is 3-0 so a win in LA and they're going back into my Top 20, promise.
South Florida - Miami was too formidable but I'm still Bullish on the Bulls and they can still be in the running for best G5 team.
Notre Dame - Not since 1988 has a winless team been ranked in the top 25. I think they're the best 0-2 team in the country, which is faint praise. Easier pastures to plow upcoming; I have a feeling they'll be back in the playoff mix come November.
South Carolina - I recognize they lost their star QB but losing by that much to Vanderbilt just seems wonky.

Just Missed:

Auburn
- I think this might be my biggest miss. They have OU next so I'll know soon enough just how big of a miss.
Mizzou - Haven't seen a second of any of their games. Good win over Kansas and South Carolina up next.
BYU - Not enough info to rank 'em yet.
TCU - Ditto above.

SC looked okay but not great against Purdue. No way do they belong in your top 20. Even if they beat Michigan State (at home). Win that one and then beat Illinois on the road? Then they can rightfully claim Top 20 status. We’ll see.

I didn't see the Purdue game but that's a solid victory on the road against a Barry Odom coached team. Keep winning and maybe feed this guy a few goal line carries: https://www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/46249233

Oregon is favored by 35 this weekend. I don't know if I've ever seen them favored by this much vs Oregon State.

I thought USC looked fine, but they need a step up in competition before we see what this team is. It does look like a more cohesive team than in the past, and their defense, (dline in particular) is looking better than in recent memory. Young team, really fast and fun.

As bad as Oregon State is at the moment - and they are just the embodiment of dysfunction - I'm not laying the 35 here. Oregon has Penn State after this one and I have to think Lanning will look to take an early lead and then pull all or most of his starters.

USC was the biggest sleeping giant in college football, IMO. It's coming together nicely and like you and BB said, we'll know more about them soon enough. I've said it before but College Football as a whole is much better when USC is good. Great brand, great band, great unis, great cheer squad.

Sigh. Longhorn fan here. Manning looks hurt. Coach Sark downplayed it prior to this past weekend, saying he's fine... but Arch was visibly grimacing during warmups two weeks ago.

Thing is, the defense is still elite. Playmakers and some of the best players in the country at DL, LB and DB. I'm holding out hope that Manning comes around.

So when coaches get canned players can hit the portal immediately. I didn’t know that. Quite a few ucla players have left the team and are visiting other schools this weekend. Seems crazy to me that is allowed mid-season. UCLA may not win a game.
That is insane. I wouldn’t want to be on that sinking ship. What happens if 30 people leave and they can’t field a roster? I know unlikely but this feels like an unmitigated disaster. I wouldn’t bet the UCLA AD didn’t know that rule either.

Agree. Offense is elite but that defense consistently allows big plays. If they were a true top 20 they should have easily covered against the 20 point spread for Purdue.

Maybe they clean it up but the CBs are rough and while the d line is getting good pressure on the QB they have some work cut out for them.

I agree that the CB play was a real concern, but it seemed to me that Lynn had them in really soft coverage specifically to prevent the big play. Purdue only scored two TDs and one was on a quirky trick play that really should have been a pick six (or an illegal forward pass). I do like the pass rush - that is much improved over last year (SC leading the FBS in sacks I believe).

Right. Why not just wait or wait another 6-7 weeks. What’s the rush.

Sounds more like a Oregon 1H play , guessing the line will be around -21.

Never thought I’d see it, but Freeman went part BK at his presser - paraphrased the calls aren’t the problem, it’s the execution.

He stuck up for Chris Ash (& Mike Denbrock) over the players. Unbelievable. Ash decimated the work Al Golden had done in only 8 months and bears significant criticism, Marcus. Fans are not happy with Freeman this morning.

ND defense has given up 68 points this season in 2 games. Last year, that was the 6 game total.
It could have been worse, TAMU had receivers behind the DBs all night.

I'm excited to see if there's about to be a Jackson Arnold revenge storyline or if there's about to be a Venables defense obliterates QB whose weaknesses they should really know storyline this weekend...

Not sure on what basis.

True. Chris Ash has destroyed the work that Al Golden had done. Many defenders are back, including most of the DBs who got abused on Saturday. The change is the scheme and coaching, not so much the personnel and the change is glaring. Too late to change the scheme at this point in the season, but Freeman and Ash need to get together and figure out what changed so fundamentally to mess things up ; confusion abounds.

This is pretty interesting. Pavia's hearing was today and his attorney made it clear that they will likely be filing for a 7th year next year. NCAA better figure something out quick or it's not going to have any rules left. #GO DORES!

“A big part of the hearing was about whether the NCAA’s appeal was moot, meaning that the appellate opinion wouldn’t actually affect anything and thus doesn’t really matter, because Pavia would still be able to play for 2025 based on the waiver, and the appeal is on an injunction based on that waiver,” Ehrlich told On3. “Pavia’s attorney argued that the appellate decision is still relevant because if the court finds that the rules are commercial and thus subject to antitrust law, he’ll be filing for a new injunction or an expedited trial schedule at the district court seeking to play 2026 as well.

“It makes sense given that his attorney is also involved in the new class action lawsuit challenging the four seasons rule overall, and Pavia would be seeking — if you take the JUCO year out of the picture — his fifth season in five years.”

TCU-SMU, Wyoming - Colorado and Arkansas - Memphis are all OOC games today that make sense to me. How the hell do Miami of Ohio and UNLV get together?

Stop trying to jinx my Canes GM
Watch em week in and week out, this is the most balanced Offense/Defense I've seen since perhaps the "87, '89 era Canes
They don't need to score 40 points a game.
I don't think the Gators will get much past 17-20

Miami 24...Florida 17
UM -7.5 which would leave them just short of covering the spread, that sounds about right
Key to Miami is the run game setting up Beck for the play action where he can hit a couple of the speedsters deep
Miami DL has looked the part so far, front 6/Front 7 has been holding up well, rushing yards have been hard to sustain for most teams they've faced, will that translate over to Florida today?
Miami has improved a lot in the trenches, that's why they're winning early season

Go Canes!!!

I'm serious about them being #1. Mario has the right balance. Just needs to not screw it up.

Not been able to watch any football yet today. Just now getting sat down to begin viewing. Curious how Texas Tech looks? What is the likelihood of them pressing for a playoff spot this year?

I think Hammond might of just taken over.

Morton was pitiful before getting smacked out of the game. Hammond comes in and moves that offense that had struggled all day.

Last play of Memphis Arkansas was hilarious. Arkansas had them pinned on a third and 8 and Memphis had thair backup qb in. Kid ran a draw and dragged a 390 pound DT for a first. Hit the weights kid.

Saw that! They did everything right but tackle him! Great individual effort by the backup Memphis QB!
