2025 College Football Thread: Mike Gundy finally free to pursue true love: driving around on stage wagon selling healing oils to local townfolk (21 Viewers)

Miami will lose to a well coached team. Not exactly sure what's wrong with UF but miami isnt impressing
It all depends on which Carson Beck shows up. He looked good in the first 3 games. His NFL stock even went up.
16/30 for 160 and an int against the 1st real def he's face is pretty telling. Sucks that napier cant figure out how to create offense. Miami is better at this point but Beck is awful.

He's not awful but Georgia moved on from him for cause. At best, he is a Day 3 Draft pick. He is Quinn Ewers 2.0.

Ewers looked good in the preseason games 2 & 3. He made quick decisions, threw people open, and throws a nice ball. I'd like to see him get a chance if Tua goes down. He had some very good moments in college in big games.

He's not even second string.

Are we just doing bits in here now? Cappy, did I miss a memo?

GM'S TOP 20 Sept. 15, 2025

1. Miami - Don't worry, it won't last. Two wins over ranked opponents put 'em here. Let's see if they can remain on top. For now, I'm buying in.
2. Ohio State - Punished here for 2 cupcakes after squeaking by a Texas team I don't think is very good anymore.
3. Penn State - They haven't played anybody yet. Get a bye before hosting Oregon. Can we make it ANY easier for this team?
4. Georgia - That was a very impressive comeback in Tennessee. Kept their composure walked away victorious when it looked like Tennessee was the better team for much of that game.
5. LSU - Why is Brian Kelley so angry all the time? I'd rank them higher, but he just rubs me the wrong way, so sit here for a week, Coach. You're going to have a heart attack living like this.
6. Florida State - Idle and then Kent State and Virginia. They should be 4-0 before hosting Miami in an enormous ACC match-up. Just like the halcyon days of yore!
7. Oregon - I don't think the Ducks like 9am PT games. Northwestern shot themselves in the foot early and was running all over Oregon late. Lanning has a lot to clean up from this one.
8, Oklahoma - I'm jumping them ahead of others because I think they have the Heisman winner under center this year. Special players elevate teams.
9. Texas A&M - Had no business winning that game but they did it. Marcel Reed throwing his hat in the ring for Heisman too.
10. Illinois - Their best win is over Duke? Feels like fools gold to me. We'll know more about them with games against Indiana and USC looming.
11. Iowa State - It ain't always pretty but they're the only 4-0 team in the nation. Game against Arizona at home should tell us more. Arizona is 3-0 and very under the radar.
12. Ole Miss - 2-0 in SEC play and a very tough game against 3-0 Tulane this weekend. Win that and their reward is LSU. GAWD. The SEC is alligator Alcatraz.
13. Georgia Tech - I don't know how much longer Haynes King can play like this. I wince every time he takes off. 3-0 with wins over Clemson and Coach Prime. Take your flowers.
14. Utah - Just beating the brakes off of teams. Not good teams, but teams. Big game this week against.....
15. Texas Tech - They spent more than any other B12 school and now it's paying off. Will the good times roll on in Lubbock? Utah's coming and this should be a very fun game.
16. Alabama - Writing them off early was probably unwise. ENORMOUS game against Georgia Sept. 27.
17. Tennessee - Woulda, coulda, shoulda. Their kicker looked terrified on the sidelines. How they rebound will be everything. Easy sledding up coming. Get right game.
18. Michigan - I have a feeling this team is going to be dangerous as Underwood develops.
19. Indiana - Finally play a real team this weekend and we'll know more about both Indiana and Illinois after this one.
20. Vanderbilt - There were a few schools in the running for the final spot but a 31-7 win over ranked South Carolina vaults Vanderbilt over the others in consideration. Should be 5-0 before Bama.

Dropping out:

Texas -
This is why we should blindly ignore pre-season polls. This team isn't deserving of a top 10 ranking. I am not even giving them a top 20 ranking. After losing to Ohio State, Texas went San Jose State, UTEP and will take on Sam Houston State. That's ridiculous. No points from me. QB looks lost. Red River Shootout is their first chance to impress again, although Florida is first.
USC - Sorry BB, this probably isn't fair. I felt like Vanderbilt had the better Saturday. Michigan State is 3-0 so a win in LA and they're going back into my Top 20, promise.
South Florida - Miami was too formidable but I'm still Bullish on the Bulls and they can still be in the running for best G5 team.
Notre Dame - Not since 1988 has a winless team been ranked in the top 25. I think they're the best 0-2 team in the country, which is faint praise. Easier pastures to plow upcoming; I have a feeling they'll be back in the playoff mix come November.
South Carolina - I recognize they lost their star QB but losing by that much to Vanderbilt just seems wonky.

Just Missed:

Auburn
- I think this might be my biggest miss. They have OU next so I'll know soon enough just how big of a miss.
Mizzou - Haven't seen a second of any of their games. Good win over Kansas and South Carolina up next.
BYU - Not enough info to rank 'em yet.
TCU - Ditto above.

Easy removals this week. Way wrong on Illinois. That might have been the worse loss of the young season by any team.

Utah out. Still think they are good and Texas Tech is for real but that was a feable effort.

Vandy moves up for sure.

Miami remains in place.

Might need to expand this to 25.

He's not even second string.

Are we just doing bits in here now? Cappy, did I miss a memo?
Ewers is 3rd string because Wilson was paid $6,000,000 and the Dolphin brass doesn't want to admit a mistake. Beat writers stated that Ewers was better than Wilson in camp. Ewers also had a better preseason. He's not Purdy, but Brock was 3rd string until Lance got hurt, and 2nd string until Garoppolo was hurt.

He has 0 TD passes today.

Meanwhile, Fernando Mendoza has 4 TDs in one half of play against a ranked team
Come on

Are you attempting to make a point or is this just horrible shtick?
Think my point was that using one week to determine a QBs worth is horrible shtick.

It was a minor point, and I will discontinue any talk about Carson Beck being a decent college QB, as it seems to make people a bit hysterical.

Wow, SEC releases a statement on the "hideout" play that resulted in an Oklahoma TD. Don't recall seeing many of those, especially not same day:

Link
Like I said after it happened, Auburn was ripped off as it was clear to everyone but the refs. That crew was horrible all game long, and the Tigers seemed to be on the bad end of just about every gaffe. A number of blatant PI's ignored and a fumble returned for a TD that was called back. A tainted win for the Sooners.

He's a good college QB at times. He's also been prone to mistakes at critical times in his college career. He has an opportunity to win a championship and write his own narrative.

Best college QB in the nation was a touch silly, no?

I guess I'm not listening to the beat reporters in Miami so I'll take your word for it. Just seems like a whole lot of NFL teams had little interest in Ewers but like you said, Brock Purdy was in a similar boat too.

GM's Top 20 Sept. 22, 2025 - Separation Saturday Looming

1. Miami - Moves to 4-0 with a win over beleaguered Florida. Huge game vs. Florida State this weekend. Good thing they have the best college QB in the nation.
2. Ohio State - Idle but a big game in Seattle on Saturday. That's a hard place to play. Possible upset?
3. Penn State - Idle after 3 wins over cookie dough soft teams. Nice schedule you got there before hosting Oregon. Can we make it any easier for Franklin to get a signature win?
4. LSU - Drubbed SE LA; at Oxford to face Ole Miss. Separation Saturday is looking choice!
5. Georgia - Drop a spot for being idle. Host Bama next. Insert popcorn emoji here.
6. Oklahoma - The win wasn't without controversy but that was a big victory over Auburn. Closest thing to a bye coming up vs Kent.
7. Oregon - Toyed with their food for a half while possibly looking ahead to Penn State. There are flaws here but still loaded with speed and talent. Moore to Moore becoming a thing.
8. Florida State - Learned nothing from a 66-10 lopsided win over Kent but they keep doing what they need to do. At UVA next.
9. Texas A&M - Idle with Auburn coming to visit. Time to stack some big wins up.
10. Indiana - Just annihilated previously ranked Illinois. Fernando Mendoza jumping into the Heisman race. Should be a top 5 pick in the NFL in '26.
11. Texas Tech - Gigantic victory over Utah and they did it with defense and a back-up QB. Odds on favorite to win the Big12 and could be dangerous in the playoffs. At Houston next.
12. Ole Miss - Thumped a good Tulane team but we'll know a lot more after the LSU game.
13. Iowa State - Idle with Arizona visiting. Sneaky good game on a very loaded college football weekend.
14. Tennessee - Nice rebound win over UAB. Visiting Starkville to take on the 4-0 Miss St. Bulldogs. MOAR COWBELL!!!1
15. Georgia Tech - Just cruising through their season now. 21 point win over Temple, Wake Forest next. Alums reaching into couch cushions to pay Brent Key.
16. Texas - Sigh....The defense is legit, the offense is coming around and they go to the Swamp to keep righting their season. Ranked higher elsewhere; docked here for easy schedule.
17. Alabama - Prove it time, Tide. Bama/Georgia. HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE COLLEGE FOOTBALL?
18. Vanderbilt - Curb-stomped a weaker foe but that's what good teams do and make no mistake, Vandy is good. Feels weird saying it, but it's true.
19. Michigan - The win at Nebraska wasn't as close as the final score indicates. Could be very dangerous in Oct/Nov.
20. USC - Had a commanding lead vs Mich. St. in a Pac-12 Big10 After Dark special but started to revert back to old bad habits late before salting it away. On the road vs. Illinois.

Dropping Out:

Illinois -
Losing to Indiana is understandable. The way they lost is not. Biggest shock of last weekend. Hosting USC next. How their season goes hinges on this one.
Utah - Punished for losing at home by 24 to Texas Tech. Still think they're one of the better Big12 schools but this wasn't a good showing.

Just Missed:

TCU
- Ranked inside the Top 25 currently and that's about right. Good win over SMU.
Notre Dame - Congrats on beating Purdue. The game in Little Rock isn't a gimme. Has a Defensive Coordinator ever been 'tarmaced' before?
Mizzou - Probably need to be inside my top 20 but again, I just haven't watched a second of their games this year.
BYU - Not enough data for me to rank them yet. At Boulder to play Prime in a night game.

Which big time program is Cignetti taking over next year?

I hope he stays at Indiana because he's doing wonderful things there, but....

Florida seems like the obvious answer.

Wisconsin is apparently honing in on New Mexico's HC (read that today).

UCLA would be a step down from Indiana, a phrase I never thought I'd utter before in my life.

Too early to say what other openings will be out there. VTech has fallen off a cliff. Oklahoma State isn't an upgrade from Indiana (and they may never get rid of Gundy).

Is Bama really going to move on from Kailynne? I doubt it.

One wild card might be Jedd Fisch taking the Florida job and Cignetti taking over at Montlake. IMO, I'd MUCH MUCH MUCH rather coach the University of Washington than the University of Florida but I'm a biased PNW resident.

Also wonder if Lincoln Riley finally gets an offer from an NFL team that he can't refuse. That would be a monster opening to a hot coach.

Obviously I am biased, but I think Michigan is a pretty interesting team. They are young so they are improving a fair amount.

They have a bye this week but then the schedule is -

v Wisconsin
at USC
v Washington
at Michigan State
v Purdue
At Northwestern
at Maryland
v Ohio State

That's about as easy of a Big Ten schedule as you can get. If they can pull off a win at USC (very difficult game), I think there's a real chance they are 10-1 getting ready to kick Ohio State's *** for the 5th year in a row.

I do think Michigan could probably beat a handful of the teams I ranked ahead of them and also think they'll climb each week. Getting UW at home is nice - that's a really hard place to play and I think Ohio State will find the sledding very hard.

Only real concern i see here is USC on the road. Can't take anyone lightly, but Washington at home and a short trip to East Lansing are very winnable.
