2025 Detroit Lions: 0-0 HOF Game on tape, as DC said..."We got work to do" (44 Viewers)

Lions resigned mediocre K Michael Badgley
Just guessing but they are not devoting a 6th round pick and might just sign an undrafted kicker or FA to compete for the job. That said he does define mediocre.

I presumed they would get a late 7th thrown in with a trade back or (more likely) sign a UDFA

Definitely wouldn't be prudent to use 6th round draft capital - there's still value there, 70-80 picks from the end of the draft

(183rd & 192nd are the 6th round picks)

Rodrigo was like 177th last year, James Houston IV 219th

Special Teams ace Chris Board signed with the Patriots

I watched the BB mid-week presser when we played them, was insane how he rattled off dozens of obscure Lions and their role. "Kalif Raymond, dangerous returner, guy they like to send deep to take a shot once or twice a game so we'll need to account for that, not too many (Holy Cross) Crusaders in the league. Chris Board, did a good job in Baltimore, signed with them in the offseason, probably the best Special Teams player we'll face this year. Jack Fox, phenomenal punter, good passer, Coach Campbell keeps you on your toes."

IDK. He does not have a strong leg, but inside the 50, he is money. Understand his limitations and use him correctly, and he is much better than average. Just know you have to get closer to the 30 instead of the 35.

Chark is trending towards resigning. That would round out the best Lions FA signing season ever, at least i don't recall a year this good.. If they can get Bridgewater as a backup, that would be icing on the cake and position us into being able to draft best available with emphasis on defense.

This is how I feel about him. Without looking up numbers I felt he was very very consistent inside of the 50 didn’t think he did a bad job really when you see the way some teams struggle to find a kicker that doesn’t implode

Seems like a really good kicker to pair up with a coach who is really aggressive in going for it on 4th down instead of kicking a long field goal.

Maybe that changes if he's got a reliable kicker with a bigger leg, but I'm fine with badgley on this team.

Michigan kicker Jake Moody said at the NFL combine he’d love to play for the Lions but today at Pro Day said he hasn’t had much conversation with them and does not have a workout scheduled

Sure looks like the Lions are setting themselves up to potentially take a QB at 6 or at least sell that possibility to other teams.

Colts made a nice singing getting Minshew for $3.5M. Teddy is still looking for his 6th team, played for $6.5M last year (and his QBR has been sub-50 the last 2 years.) They should at least sign their 3rd stringer (Josh Johnson, Brian Hoyer, et al) so we're not completely naked.

Not the worst fake out to just let it ride to stir up some trade back interest. Personally I'm hoping for a 6th round project QB (O'Connell or Tune.)

I have no idea where these guys will get drafted but I actually like Stetson Bennett. Yes he is older and isn't the most toolsy but he impressed me at the combine. He was dropping in some of the best deep balls of the QB groups. I also like the idea of Dorian Thompson-Robinson. He has a lot of starting experience, has shown good accuracy even if he has a so-so arm. The fun part with him is the 4.5 speed as a rusher. When you go to a back-up, you are at such a disadvantage passing the ball at least having an athlete there can an add a wrinkle to the offense.

The #Lions are signing back defensive back and stellar special teamer C.J. Moore, source said. He gets a 2-year, $4.5M deal with $3M fully guaranteed and another $1.25M available in potential incentives. Moore visited the #Patriots on Friday.

The fake punts will continue!

Moore has some amazing stats running those. Last two years he's taken three direct snaps for 28, 13, and 42, getting a first down 3/3 times.

I do feel really good about the draft having signed two capable Corners. Way less pressure to take a CB at #6 because we're assured of getting either one of the blue chip DL or "settling" for Tyree Wilson. We're gonna create some havoc with Hutch facing less double teams.

There are so many good Cornerbacks in this class. Whether we take one at 18 or 48, we'll be getting a good one.

Love that we have a solution at most of the need positions covered following the FA signings. We could still draft a CB, G, or RB early, but we have the flexibility to ignore those positions if we want to just keep taking BPA. Nothing worse than reaching because you need to fill a hole.

Have they still not released the details of Anzalone's contract? If not, that seems weird, and probably means it's a lot more team-friendly than it was announced at.
That table and that graph don't seem to jibe to me. Whatever, I'm sure someone gets it

2023: Base Salary - 1.2m, Bonus 1.2m, 100k per game bonus (1.7m) = 4.1m
2023: Cash Flow - 6.1m

The game bonuses are 100K per year not 1.7M.

Helpful chart and explanation of the breakdown here.

I don't know where he would fit in draft wise but I keep looking at this Lions depth chart and looking at Quentin Johnston and thinking, "I bet the Lions could really love what he would bring to the offense".

So much for a hole at safety, welcome to Detroit Chauncey Gardner-Johnson
With the draft added, DET should have the most improved defense.
The staff definitely thinks they can make a playoff run this year. The division is down and the NFC isn't very strong. Now is the time to make a move. The best part is the team really doesn't have any holes so they can take BPA at every spot.

Lions offseason so far:

- Signed S Chauncey Gardner-Johnson

- Signed RB David Montgomery

- Signed CB Cameron Sutton

- Signed CB Emmanuel Moseley

- Signed G Graham Glasgow

- Own picks 6, 18, 48 and 55 in the Draft.

Detroit is loading up.

And each of those is an upgrade, the secondary pickups were significant upgrades. The only position we arguably downgraded would be WR assuming Chark signs elsewhere. But realistically, we did not have Jamo last season, so we could arguably be better there. Rarely does a team improve that many places in FA without giving anything up.

And now for the draft which will be all icing on the cake!

All I can say is "wow". This one came out of nowhere.

Holmes is crushing free agency without a bunch of bad contracts.
Yep, usually when you see a team get this many upgrades, you cringe a little when you see the contracts. I give Holmes a ton of credit here but also DC and AG deserve credit as well. I am certain it’s their reputation and the culture they have built that has convinced players to take these friendly or short term deals.

Been reported Lions offered Williams the same deal they gave Monty.

Williams has to be a little pissed at his agent who waited and cost him a couple million.

On another note not sure what they will do with Okudah. Still think he has a future in the league as a safety as he is a good and willing tackler, just not a top notch cover guy.

Seems like Holmes has found a recipe for success. If you can keep finding the good players who want to come here on prove it deals instead of breaking the back and risking cap hell it could work.

Conflicting reports might be more accurate as Birkett and Meinke related different stories from different sources. One version is the agent for JW had a deadline of the start of the NFL year and when he didn't meet it Holmes started the process to sign another back.

@FieldYates

Lions edge rusher Romeo Okwara agreed to a renegotiated contract that reduces his cap hit for 2023 down from $14.5M to $5.647M.

That looks like DJ Chark-money!

Screw it bring Hopkins in. He's out of GTD money, we'll cut him next spring. Pay for it with simple restructure of Goff (12.4) & Ragnow (7.9) and cutting Big V (6.5). Boom, done, kick it down the road. Now go win the NFC.

Graham Glasgow on his departure: "I was bitter, yeah. But I got over that relatively quickly. .... Jeez, that's a lot of typing." Graham Glasgow. He's back, sense of humor intact too.

He followed that up with "Too late to retract that? OK, whatever, it's out there now."

To me, now the missing FA signing is Bobby Wagner. This would be a perfect signing for both on the field need and also showing the younger guys how to prepare for a winning culture, let's get er done.

Any word on Levis or Richardson meeting? Have to wonder if they’re thinking rookie qb early with no big holes to fill otherwise. Can’t be expecting many more top draft picks in the near term. There has to a little bit of nervousness about Goff regressing some.

SI: list of formal combine visits with Detroit Lions (per reports)

LB Noah Sewell, Oregon
LB Trenton Simpson, Clemson
S Jammie Robinson, Florida State
QB Anthony Richardson, Florida
OL Jordan McFadden, Clemson
OT Darnell Wright, Tennessee
WR Quentin Johnston, Texas
WR Antoine Green, North Carolina
WR Jayden Reed, Michigan State
TE Sam LaPorta, Iowa
TE Tucker Kraft, South Dakota State
G Antonio Mafi, UCLA

Those are player interviews, there were others not listed bc they weren't formal requests/interviews but they talked to the player informally.

Don't think player visits have begun yet as most guys are getting ready for their Pro Day, or conversely, Lions coaches & staff are flying around campuses attending said Pro Days.
