2025 Detroit Lions: 0-0 HOF Game on tape, as DC said..."We got work to do" (45 Viewers)

Cominsky resigned! Bringing the gang all back in FA plus some CB help.

2 years, 8.5M, 4.0M guaranteed, another 1.0M incentives
Seems a lot more reasonable than Anzalone's

Did we get details on AA yet?

Length, total and average are meaningless. the only important thing is what is GTD at signing, effectively guaranteed, e.g., what's the Cap Space/Dead Cap impact.

Most contracts are backloaded and aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

If Anzalone's is $10M or less GTD and we can get out after a year when he gets surpassed, who cares? Pretty low stakes.
Good point. Hopefully they have early outs built in.

I wonder if this means Detroit isn’t planning on going CB early?
It very well could. We got 2 legit starting corners without breaking the bank. The only question is Moseley's health. They have flexibility now in that they don't necessarily have to spend a first rounder on a corner. It's a deep class and they could take one in the 2nd or 3rd.

I really like the Montgomery signing. He is similar to Jamaal Williams but younger and also is always among the league leaders in broken tackles. Seems like a perfect fit.
Yep - both broken tackles and elusiveness (missed tackles) - IIRC Monty is among the best at that.

Agreed. Locker room might be unhappy for a bit .. but Monty has that “Dawg” just like Jamaal had - younger, and more skilled. I love it.

I heard on the radio that the Lions were 9-3 when Cominsky played and 0-5 when he didn't.

Not quite, but almost true.

He played 14 games; it was 9-5 and 0-3.

TBF, he played a season low 10 snaps in both the MIA and DAL losses, the first two games after he broke his thumb (and IIRC had surgery.)

The only positions I see the Lions drafting in the first round is DL and CB. The recent signings only solidify that. Unless Brad and Dan fall in love with a player, I still see defense is going to dominate the first several picks.

Younger, better receiver, significant difference for the good in breaking tackles compared to Williams and is a competent pass blocker. YPC similar. This is an upgrade. Another parameter in evaluating the signing is how much $ Williams wanted.

David Montgomery hmm maybe no Jamaal

Did not see that one coming
Really out of the blue. Good back though - Lions have a scary backfield with Monty/Swift, assuming Swift is still a lion.
Montgomery is going to be the grinder and has a reputation of playing through injuries. The Lions need a homerun back. I do not think they trust Swift and believe they will seek to upgrade from Swift.

The signing of two competent veteran CBs gives them the option of going RB or QB in the first round depending on who's there at 6 and 18. Or RB in the second. Based on how Holmes aggressively went after Jameson Williams last year I can see the Lions looking at Bijan or Gibbs. Williams was evaluated by the Lions last year as a home run threat and difference maker.

If the Lions consider any of the RBs in the draft a player comparable to Jameson Williams I think they would make a movie.

Moseley signing doesn't add up for me primarily because its a one year contract. Takes 8 to 12 months to come back from an ACL tear. He was injured in October last year.
You may be right but I've seen a couple articles that indicate he'll be ready by week 1. I'm sure Holmes did his homework and didn't spend 6 million on a guy that can't help them this year. And there's nothing keeping them from extending him if he works out well.
Many players have said that they were not 100% until @two years after their injury. That said I like the Lions having two new competent veteran CBs. If they draft a CB, it allows them to develop him over the year if needed without throwing him into the fire like Okudah.

I think Jamaal comes back the way he spoke after the game, unless someone really throws money at him ( unlikely given FA class and deep draft ).

Alternatives …

FA - Monty/Harris or Sanders if they aren’t costing much more than a Jamaal return
Draft - Evans/Chase Brown/Corum/Charbonnet type ?

Highly doubt we are in for one of the very top draft options although have now seen a mock today with Bijan going to us at 18

I think he stays

Coincidental coordinates, probably the first time I’ve ever guessed anything like this.

I like the signing. As people have already mentioned, he’s a good all round back and younger than Jamaal. He’s a little bit better tbh, I’d say

So far Holmes has signed 2 starting caliber corners for reasonable contracts. They are not necessarily pro bowlers but both were very good in coverage last year. Now he signs Montgomery. Another solid move without breaking the bank.

I still haven't seen details of Anzalone's contract so it's hard to say if it's good or bad. Personally I wanted to see someone better but I don't think Holmes values that position that high. Other than that I think he has done a very good job of addressing needs without giving out bad contracts.

There might be more to come. I'm waiting to see what happens at right guard. I think they go defensive line at 1.06 and maybe 1.18 as well. If they don't sign a guard that is another possibility in round 1 or 2. They also need a backup QB and there are not a whole lot of options. I don't think they are keeping Chark but could go for a cheaper option or maybe draft one in round 2 or 3. They also could draft another CB. The draft is very deep so they could get a good player in round 2 or 3. I don't think they go CB in round 1 but it's possible.

All in all I'm happy with what Holmes has done so far in free agency. Solid players and more importantly no bad contracts.

Yeah that’s how I see it as well. It takes the pressure off but doesn’t remove the option. Most of these guys aren’t signed longterm.

I am mixed on the Monty deal. It’s a reasonable price though RBs on 2nd deals is a dangerous game because their best years are typically behind them at this point. I will miss Jamaal but at least on the field Montgomery is better.

Montgomery was a very good signing. We were using Williams as a number 1 back and he is really not. I think losing Duce was good for Swift. Montgomery is a very good third down and short yardage back, and can be effective as a feature back, but we can utilize Swift to give us that explosiveness. I think we will get much better production from our running game with Swift-Montgomery with closer to a 50-50 split.

seems like a lot for Montgomery compared to the market right now but time will tell. very clear they don't see Swift as the guy which is a bummer but he can still be impactful with limited touches.

what do you guys think about WR at 18? maybe the OSU kid or Quentin Johnson. I could see a fit. ETA: Hyatt from Tenb there maybe?

2 years younger as a running back, that's like 14 in human years.
It is kind of weird. Backs like Walter, Barry, and Emmitt were very effective into their 30's. Now nobody wants anything to do with a back who is 29.
Not too long ago, in 2018 in Miami, Frank Gore at age 35 averaged 4.6 ypc and had an 80.3 pff grade on about 10 carries per game. He had great vision between the tackles. Montgomery has a more patient style, but I'm slightly concerned that Herbert looked a little better behind the same line.

Some Honolulu Blue Kool Aid for ya filthy animals:

John Cominsky: “I already told them, I told A.G., I’m ready to run through a brick wall for that organization and he said, 'Well, when you run through that brick wall I’m going to be right behind you.'"

WR Prospect I like a lot....

A.T. Perry, Wake Forest

Combine profile

listed 6'5" 205 came out 6' 3-1/2" 198 at Indianapolis
4.47 40
9.23 RAS

2021: 71-1296-15 on 125 targets
2022: 81-1100-11 on 129 targets

3-star recruit, redshirted 2018, 4 catches 2019, 15 catches 2020, turns 24 this fall. 9th best WR prospect at NFL.com of just the Combine participants. Some obvious red flags there.

PFF has him at #74 overall on their post-Combine Big Board, WR8 in a weak class - he's rated between Michael Wilson Stanford and Rashee Rice SMU.

Pre-season last fall they wondered if he could be the best WR in the class (hype)

This next link is an interview from the Shrine Bowl. Oh man, this is just amazing. This is a really cerebral kid, you can knock his age and level of competition but this kid gets it.

Top WR prospect A.T. Perry breaks down his ridiculously detailed routes

That is a guy who knows his craft. Really fascinating listening to him talk about what his reads are presnap, how he knows the quarterback is seeing the same thing, how he varies his release so guys can't just watch film and pick up on his habits, etc.

Somebody is going to get a pretty special player IMO. Because of his late breakout and age, will def be overlooked by too many. Dude has some insane release moves and is great at contested catches.

Late 3rd round or early 4th

Watched highlights and Monty seems like a Williams clone but a little faster and better pass receiver.

Looks like Williams priced himself out of Detroit.

Luke warm on the AA signing. Good team guy but don`t think he would be coveted much by other teams.

When the agent doesn't put the GTD money out there, that happens for a reason.

I am almost certain this is Swift’s last year in Detroit. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Detroit spend a mid round pick on a pass catching back.

As for WRs, no to JSN. He’s too similar to Amon Ra and I think Hiatt is too similar to Jameson. Q is a maybe but I think the Lions have bigger needs. I still expect them to sign a big bodied X WR before FA ends. The player might not be really good but he will be able to fill the role.

I’m deeply skeptical that they take a RB in the 1st after signing Monty.

IMO that is their only RB move, save for a later round pick or a veteran depth signing.

You don’t guarantee $11M to a top FA RB then draft one in the 1st. That would be more of an either/or situation.

I am not sure Monty is a JWill clone as people suggest. Considering JWill ran behind one of the best o-lines in the league and Monty one of the lesser ones I am quietly very high on Monty going into 2023 magic football drafts.

Have to see what the Lions do to replace losses and add depth on the OL but there is real reason for high expectations from the Lions backfield again this season.

I’m not sure that exists at the moment.

I’m sensing that you’re higher on one of these players above the rest but I can’t quite put my finger on it 🤔

where's that article I linked on the 8 moves the Lions could make to free up $40M in cap space?

Eagles are planning on releasing Slay
