2025 Detroit Lions: 0-0 HOF Game on tape, as DC said..."We got work to do" (36 Viewers)

The Lions WR space still has some wild cards in it.

ARSB is locked as WR#1 and will get 150 targets. Will be interesting if he runs more deeper routes this year, but regardless will be a massive year for him.

Kalif Raymond has quietly moved into the second spot in Jamo's absence, and I think will put up very good numbers. Fantasywise a great deep sleeper pick, with a high floor but not a huge upside.

Josh Reynolds is Goff's comfort food. Will reliably put up a few catches every game, but rarely anything big.

Marvin Jones Jr., a great contested catch WR which Goff avoids throwing like the plague. His inability to consistently get separation makes him a terrible fit. Like Galloday, Marvin needs a slinger like Stafford. Still a great WR, but getting old and will not see many targets.

Here it gets interesting, as Dan Campbell indicated the last two spots are wide open a couple weeks ago.

Chase Cota seems to have separated himself from the pack in the preseason games, and may be actually start competing with Marvin for snaps as WR#4.

Antoine Green and Dylan Drummond are both bubble guys, who will either be WR#6 or practice squad players. I could see the Lions pivot a bit and only keep 5 active WRs on the 53-man roster, so they can keep extra depth at DL. With Gibbs, LaPorta, and Mitchell being very effective lining up at WR, the need to have 6 WR active is diminished, IMHO.

I doubt if anyone would snipe these WRs. Drummond has been a standout in camp, but had some drops in the games. Green speed makes him a better fit for the Lions need though.

Interest thoughts on Marvin Jones Jr. and how Goff will look elsewhere. LaPorta appears to have a chance at being next in line for targets after St. Brown and maybe Gibbs.

Bears fan here. Rooting for the Lions this year as I think you finally have a squad and we definitely don't.

Did you know that the Lions have NEVER won the NFC North since its inception in 2002? That is absolutely insane. Furthermore, you have to go all the way back to 1993 the last time the Lions won their division. At that time it was the NFC Central.

...and I thought it was rough being a Bears fan, we're talking about a 30 year drought here. Get it done, Motor City. Don't let Green Bay or Minnesota take this away from you. This is your year.

We are very aware of how inept the Lions have been. Dysfunctional leadership will do that for you. Thanks for your support.

We received good draft capital after we traded our QB and its helped us greatly. A good GM makes a difference.

Bears have a lot of draft capital now and like the Lions also received a good player in the trade.

Jon Jansen did not sound too high on LaPorta right now. But did have praise for Mitchell. TE is a difficult position for rookies with the blocking assignments as well as routes.

Was planning on drafting LaPorta in my FF league but that info causes some pause. Any details?
Is it coming from the coaches?

My opinion

Jansen is giving his view based on preseason games. LaPorta played 16 snaps and couldn’t corral his lone target. Sam, Gibbs & Branch all sat out P2 bc they’re already starters. He had great OTAs, minicamp and was stacking good days in TC. He’s far ahead of Mitchell, who himself looks like a new man. What LaPorta can do - but we haven’t seen it much yet - is line up in the slot and out wide.

I think he’ll be like most rookie TEs. He’ll have uneven production. I think the snaps will be there. Targets are earned. I think he or Kincaid or Musgrave are good picks from the 11th-14th round as your backup TE bc they’ll be starters on productive offenses. But to be FF relevant you need to be a top 2 target on your own team, and that seems unlikely.

I agree. Rookie TEs are a crap shoot.

Janson was not bashing LaPorta, just said he looks like a rookie who is learning. Janson does attend some practices to view players.

LaPorta sitting out game two clearly shows where he stands on the depth chart. Mitchell is still fighting for the second spot against Wright. Detroit uses TE quite a bit, so I would be shocked if LaPorta does not get over 700 yards, which puts him in the top 10. Dan Campbell knows the TE position. If LaPorta was not ready, he would be getting more reps.

I am starting to think this division may be stronger than I initially thought. If Fields takes a step forward the Bears could be a tough offense to contend with. Love does not look as lost as I thought he would and has a nice group of young skill players to work with (along with what may be the best defense in the division). Most agree the Vikings overachieved last year, but they achieved and should be competitive again. This is going to be a battle all season long and who can stay the healthiest may be the one who comes out on top. I am ready for kickoff.

Vegas team totals are all within 2 games of each other. This was never going to be a cakewalk. That said, the Lions should still be a slight favorite.

Booked a weekend getaway for Inner Harbor Baltimore in October today. Have a full weekend planned, with the last activity being M&T Bank Stadium for the Detroit Lions at the Baltimore Ravens.

:excited:

I got the weekend booked in LA for the Chargers game. Splurged for some good seats 5 rows up from the Lions bench. Supposed to be a great stadium.

Except for the second Chicago game all the division games were competitive close ones last year.
Lions also have improved particularly on defense. What usually makes the difference for most NFL games is the ability to execute in the fourth quarter on offense or defense. Closing out games or snatching them away in the last few minutes.
As a biased fan I would say that the Lions have focused on drafting productive intelligent high character players many of whom have been team captains. I often read about Campbell through team drills putting the team in end game situations to prepare them to close out games.

Time and time again you see NFL games decided by dumb penalties, failure to stay in bounds or get out of bounds, throwing short of the sticks or a bad drop or missed throw.

So if your team plays intelligent football and are poised and prepared for the end game you
will lose less. Again as a biased fan I think from the beginning Campbell has instilled in the team to be aggressive and not play with fear. Its readily seen in his coaching decisions and in Holmes draft picks.
Also Campbell is intelligent his decision to refuse the offsides penalty against Green Bay at the end of the last game was one of the smartest decisions I have seen a Lions coach make.

Holmes and Campbell have set the Lions up to be a continually competitive team. We should have a good year. Now if we could just get a little lucky.

At +3500, Brian Branch is an enticing pick for Rookie DPOY. It will be tough for a safety to win it, but Branch is going to have a huge impact. If Jalen Carter shows up, he will be gifted the award.

Note surprisingly, MCDC is the favorite to win coach of the year at +1000.

Hutchinson at +3000 for DPOY is interesting. He is an absolute beast on the playing field and has been working his butt off. Hutch finished the season strong and I expect him to make a big leap, and will have a lit more help. Still not likely.

Levi Onwuzurike hits another milestone in comeback bid for Lions

Onwuzurike logged 31 defensive snaps and another four on special teams in last week’s exhibition loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars. And this came after the former second-rounder logged 22 reps in the preseason-opening win over the New York Giants. He’s notched three tackles and created two pressures in those two games, ranking as the team’s top-graded interior defender by Pro Football Focus.

It might be hard watching Jalen Carter blow up and become that next dominant defensive interior lineman. But if Levi and others are healthy, the Lions will still have one of the deepest and best DL in football.

I think it will be dependent on what Gibbs and LaPorta do. If they drafted Carter neither one would be on the team without that #6 for #12 & #34 trade they made.

Reynolds vs Raymond upside is intriguing. They both have been in the league 6-7 seasons, Reynolds has the better numbers but the catch rate for Raymond is much higher. Raymond doesn't find the end zone much though and he's not a red zone target. He has to break a long catch and run to score.

It's not acceptable to miss a 53 yard FG short. That kind of stuff will cost us games.

💯

we're used to it - 3 years of not being able to find a big leg K

nice dIving interception by Lucas who is def on the bubble

looks like Drummond came to play

(not watching but will rewatch tomorrow)

Boy the CBS all had great games. Starling got another illegal contact call - his physicality is one of his best traits (besides being super fast) but he’s been stacking days, should be a lock.
  • Steven Gilmore: 5 tackles, 4 passes defended and pick six
  • Chase Lucas: 3 tackles, 3 passes defended and an INT
  • Khalil Dorsey: 5 tackles, forced fumble and a 62 yard kickoff return
There's a chance they'll play some IR games and stick Iffy and someone else on IR, and try to sneak these guys through waivers (after which they slide 2 guys to IR and resign the young corners.) Thomas and Gilmore would get poached IMO. Lucas has done enough to stick.

Tough decisions on Tuesday. Solving this is a lot harder than WR. I think they keep Green (draft capital) and one of Cota/Drummond, with the other going to the PS. Would prefer they cut Cabinda and Harris but coaches are a little stubborn sometimes.

Why the Lions dumped Hock. Makes sense as they were never going to pay him Kelce $$$$$

The Vikings and tight end T.J. Hockenson have been working on an extension, but both sides are far apart, per league sources. Hockenson wants to reset the market with a historic contract extension for tight ends. He has been limited at practice because of an ear infection and back soreness.

Trevor Nowaske (Saginaw Valley State) v Anthony Pittman is another interesting decision. Chalk would be go with the veteran. Nowaske had two tackles on kickoffs last night and an excellent pass breakup in the end zone. 9.85 RAS - I'm hoping they do the surprising thing and give the kid a chance. Worst case bound for the PS and he will get called up to play ST during the year.

Taylors dad works out at the same gym as I do, saw him talking to Hutchs dad last week.

Lomas and Dan were talking him up pretty good last night.

In the most important news of the preseason Teddy was finally able to get rid of the #50 jersey, which was obviously weighing him down.

@TomPelissero

Lions released veteran DT Christian Covington, per source. He had a sack last night.

8 year vet, oldest player on the defense. Not unexpected but it's a measure of how deep their DL is that he's basically the first cut.

Tyreek cost a known late 1st (29th), mid 2nd, and a couple of later picks. Evans might cost a 2nd. Lots of speculation, but makes sense for TB to tank for 2024.
