2025 Detroit Lions: 4-1 Lions win battle of the big cats. (33 Viewers)

Back to square one. What a joke. :toilet:

They were talking today about Lions draft picks the last 2 years under Holmes.

15 picks were made and Lions are only getting production out of 2-3 players. Sewell was a no brainer although some argue Parsons would have been more help at the time but still a solid pick. St Brown for sure but if he was so highly thought of the Lions or other teams would have taken him before the 4th rd. Still a good pick.

2021-#2 Onwuzurike, #3 McNeil, #3 Melifonwu, have done nothing. #4 Barnes is a role player The 2s and 3s are the players who build the roster with talent.

2021- #2 overall Hutch has been very disappointing, #1 Williams was injured on draft day. #2 Pashal not much, #3 Joseph not much, #5 Mitchell injured when drafted, #6 Rodriguez has played well at times, size might hurt him in long run but still good for a 6th round. #6 Houston, #Lucas,

15 picks coming to a lousy team and not much production overall. Have to expect players taken in the top 1-10 to be your stars, the 2-3s to be your core.

Time will tell on the 2s and 3s that have done nothing but early results are not good.

Seems like DC coaches like this is a Friday HS game.

I like DC but Not sure he is cut out to be a HC, seems like he would be a great special teams coach, motivator. Being a HC involves being able to manage the game situations, the clock, the TOs, DC has floundered in all those phases so far.

Hutch got pushed around again today, had a chance at one sack but Zappe evaded him. Right now, just about any FA DE would be contributing as much.

Hoping things will get better with Hutch, if it does not that will hurt. Holmes has invested early picks in the d-line and they have not panned out so far.

Yeah I'm gonna tap out for awhile. These last 3 games....I wouldn't say it broke me as a fan, but Imma take mini-break from the Lions. Canceled my NFL app subscription (just the RZ & local radio, not a full subscription) that I use to listen the games.
  • I said all summer Holmes is the best talent evaluator the Lions have had at GM. While I still believe that, we've never known what successful roster construction looks like. On a relative scale, he's the right guy. He deserves a full tenure to see how this plays out. At some point, he has probably earned the right to pick his own coach.

  • We all love the former (recent) players as coaches. Clearly some of them are pretty good (Randle El, Fraley, TBD on Sheppard, Pleasant) at their job. Ben Johnson is a very good OC. But you have to wonder if they actually understand what it takes to win in the NFL

  • AG is the wrong DC. There are some guys who talk a really good game and seem like they know what they're doing, but the results show they're actually grossly incompetent. I think that's the deal with Aaron Glenn. I know there were a lot of holes to fill, but this is absurd. He inherited a defense which, the last two years of Quinntricia, were the two worst defensive teams in the Lions 90 year history. They drafted and signed a bunch of new players, and it's somehow become worse. I didn't think that was possible. IDK if they should switch midseason bc I'm not sure Aubrey would be any better.

  • Goff is a bit like Kurt Cousins at this point, or maybe Derek Carr. Not saying he's better than either, but a few things seem obvious. He's never going to be the guy. Give him a clean pocket and surround him with weapons, he can be adequate. He does not elevate teammates. At $30.6M and $31.6M, his cap hit the next two seasons is middle of the pack - reasonable. I'm OK with keeping him on that basis. 2023 is a VERY deep QB class. I want both 1st round picks spent on defensive players. Meaning Day 2 QB, meaning probably not ready for 2023. But roll with Goff for the next two and see if Brunell can coach the Day 2 QB up.

  • MCDC is not an NFL level head coach. He is a great motivator and everyone likes him. But he's too erratic, on both sides of the ball their overly aggressive style hurts the team. I don't think I really need to go deep into this. Everyone sees it. I don't know when is the right team to move on, but at this point I don't think it's if, it's just a question of when. I had a lot of doubts about him after last year. Not because of the record, but because I don't think he makes good decisions. At the end of the day - I've said this dozens of times in this thread - the cultural shift and positivity have translate into wins. Maybe he evolves, maybe Holmes brings in way more talent. Maybe. Right now it looks like his high school let's get fired up spirit is not the recipe for success at the professional level.
Imma be away for awhile. I have Jamo stashed on IR and will see three late season games on TV: Thanksgiving and the two Met Life games. But other than that, I'm out for awhile.

I have a nice, simple life on Sundays. My bride and I go to church, have brunch with friends, go to the park or museum. The Lions are just this big ole pile of frustration. I'm at a point in life where I'm cool with cutting off people or things that are more trouble than they're worth. This team is just something I need less of right now. It's not something that is worth getting upset about or going on a tirade. I'll just let them go for awhile, I have other things/people I'd prefer to invest in.
I understand the frustration I checked out on the Lions after Old Man Ford renewed Millen's contract. All my Lions clothing and gear went into a box in the basement. I'd still watch most of the games, but it wasn't fun, and it wasn't a religion anymore.

Before this season many analysts thought 6-7 wins was a reasonable goal. I was hoping for more but its not going to be. If we get 6 wins with where we are now I'd be mildly pleased.

Campbell is at a crossroads can he tone down his aggression or expectations? His decision making is hurting the Lions. He reminds me of the Kevin Costner character in Tin Cup who was always striving for the perfect shot and didn't take into account the situation where it was sometimes safer and better to lay up.

Regarding Holmes's draft choices, I think with seriously injured players (Levi O., Mitchell, Pascal, J. Williams) you do not really expect to see their full potential until two years after the injury. For one they miss out on training camp the first year and their bodies to need the second year to fully recover. I expect Jameson Williams to flash and show his potential but I do not see him being a difference maker this year.

This is a strange volatile season and I think mirrors their head coach. Campbell reminded me of Mike Ditka, emotional and stubborn but without the meanness/rage. How does a team lead the NFL in points and then get shutout? How does a team set a record for most points scored in 4 games and then set a record for going 0-6 on fourth down in a game?

Campbell defended his decisions from the NE game. I mentioned he was stubborn. A wiser and more patient coach would have punted on the first 4th down and on the second 4th. Put the pressure on the rookie QB in his first start and give your defense a longer field to defend.

The Cowboys game is a benchmark for the rest of season. Swift, St. Brown, Chark, Cominsky, Pascal and hopefully some of the DBs will be back and in good health.
It will be strength (lions O) vs strength (cowboys D) Prescott will be rusty particularly if he doesn't start vs Eagles.

It is extremely important that the Lions O plays well vs Cowboys and for rest of the season. For me, it gives hope because if the offense can get fixed this season, then maybe the defense will be the next. We need to get production from all the high draft choices that have been made on the D side.

One good thing about being a Lions fan is that it forces you to face the fact that some things in life just don't work out.

The thing I like best is that no matter how bad my fantasy team is going, it's almost always doing better than the Lions.

Yesterday was a terrific, mostly NFL free Sunday for me. We finished socializing after church and were waiting for car service, I made a couple quick GTD moves and put the app away for the day. Listened to the game while getting to our brunch spot.

Didn't think about football the rest of the afternoon, took in some fall color, had friends over for a meal and a few bottles of wine, telling stories for hours. Binged a little Netflix, on my way to the bedroom took a glance at my FF team. High score for the week, finally a MNF with no sweat, first place. See how easy this hobby is when you don't think about it too much? Picked an optimal lineup for the first time in forever.

I hate it when the Lions play awful and fantasy team stinks. My irritability increases and it's just so idiotic - sports should be a source of enjoyment. I'm very passionate about teams I follow, it's just not in my DNA to be a casual. But if the only team I care about is going to play in a way that is this embarrassing, I'm better off just letting it go for a few months. Maybe next year they'll get it right.

I love reading books about the 1940s-1950s Brooklyn Dodgers fans. "Just wait until next year!" Every. Single. Year. They won ten pennants without a World Championship (1890, 1899, 1900, 1916, 1920, 1941, 1947, 1949, 1952, 1953.) The last 5 times they lost the World Series to the Yankees. Then it finally happened.

Detroit has nowhere near that level of consistently good teams, but it still resonates. We can never beat the Vikings, the Packers have ruled the division for decades, we find new and inventive ways to lose every year. Obscure league rules are discovered as a new way to screw us out of a win and get changed in the offseason. It's unending.

One day before I die it will be Brooklyn in 1955. It's going to be amazing.

What DC has going for him is that Sheila hired him and gave him a 6 year contract. That is unheard for a former TE coach. No matter what happens I would say he has at least two more years after this.

The only thing that could change this is if Holmes thinks DC is not the guy. That could happen.

Lions did it backwards again, hiring DC before hiring the new GM. Makes no sense.

It was a really tough spot on Sunday for them - hurt players going into a bye, and facing a stud D on the road. I know NE had the 3rd string qb, but this was Hoodie vs Campbell at home and the Lions bandwagon growing. The Lions will be as good as the D.

Actually they hired Brad first, 6 days prior to Campbell. He wasn’t involved in the search but he did participate in the final decision (though after being on the job for a few days, what else was he going to do except embrace it?) They chose to pick their own coach. After letting Bob Quinn pick his guy, understandable they’d prefer to use the same team to hire both.

( SFH, Rod Graves, Mark Hollis, Barry Sanders, and, of course, Chris Spielman. Plus our favorite I’m not a football guy Rod Wood.)

6 year contract isn’t an obstacle. Matt Rhule is going to be drawing $833K from the Panthers for the next 50 months. Patricia doesn’t get real titles anymore because we’re still paying him off (voids if he takes another HC or coordinator gig.)

I don't think the Pats D is elite as in years past. They have beat up on two bad teams with 1-4 records and lost to 3 good teams with winning records. So they are basically just like any other team that probably isn't going to make the playoffs and may finish last in their division.

Sunday was indeed a really lackluster game for them. However, this team is playing their butts off. They're young and have to learn how to win. The only thing to do now is have them go through the trials.

Hopefully, they hold together and figure it out.

If you are looking for comparable ineptitude, in game 5 of the 1920 World Series the Brooklyn Pitchers batted 3 times and made 7 outs.

Hutch`s Bronco was at his parents' home all day yesterday. Walked the dog by twice and was hoping to see him outside.

friend from my CMU days grew up in the same subdivision as Barry back in the day. modest house in Rochester Hills, typical middle class neighborhood. Sanders had a basketball hoop in his driveway; he'd be out there shooting, little kids would come by and play him in HORSE or Round the World.

I talked to Barry a few times, I grew up in Rochester Hills and he used to come into the Kroger I worked at every so often. Was always super nice. It was also always amazing to me that he was only like an inch taller than I was but his legs were like tree trunks.

I would not call Hutch's parent`s home modest. :) Probably worth well over 1 million.

My buddy ran a TGIF that Barry stopped in 1-2 times a week. Every time he would order a large vanilla milkshake to go..thats it. Ordered it then stood in the lobby waiting by himself.

I have a picture of Barry and myself. Barry gave a speech to a youth group that Ford promoted. Barry was a horrible speaker, not polished at all, but he spoke from the heart and it was great.

After they had a little stand up type of lunch where people mingled. I am 6-1, in the picture Barry looks so short next to me but was built like a fireplug, thick and wide lower body for sure. Barry is a man of few words in public.

Dan Miller was on The Ticket last night for his weekly show and said what has really hurt is the Lions are not getting any help from the first and second round players who were drafted while injured.

With Hutch underperforming at #2 overall, then Levi, Paschal and Williams not playing. Those are 2 #1s and 2 #2s with little or no production with 3 on defense where they are needed the most. Also the TE Mitchell is still not ready.

Holmes might have to rethink the drafting of players who are already hurt.

I have to think the bye came at the right time for the Lions. Jamaal has done well in relief of Swift, but he just brings another edge to the game. I agree, the Defense has been troublesome. They need to make some changes there. Hoping to see them bring it together as they are a fun team to watch.. .although the last several weeks were brutal after such a great start.

In addition to what you mentioned, also DL Brockers signed as a free agent to a large contract has not worked out. Also carrying substantial dead weight $ for 2 other defensive FAs in Trey Flowers and Jamie Collins. Even carrying dead weight $ on another defensive player Tavai who somehow has found his way to playing time on the Patriots.

Levi O looks like a pick that will not turn out. And it's somewhat scary that Holmes had to be talked out of trading up for him. Also would mention that Iffy M. a third round pick gets injured as soon hits the field and Barnes who they traded up for has not yet helped.

As to Hutchinson he's still developing, he graded out well last game. Harris has not contributed what they hoped. I do not think Hutch is getting much help. Am pleased with Cominsky though and his return will boost DL and pass rush.

Anyway Thats a lot of money and draft capital invested with little return and why defense is struggling so.

Holmes is taking the long view and planning on substantial contributions from injured players like Pascal, Williams and Mitchell next year. Thinking he got value in the draft from where they would have been drafted if healthy.

Lions focused on the offense because they had something to build with the OL and Hock and needed to know about Goff. Until NE game we were pleased with the results.

As to the injuries that have plagued the Lions the last two years I just dont know. I read that in terms of some stat they had been hurt by injuries the third most of all teams.

Edit>> Forgot to Include Alim McNeill who has contributed on DL.

I think people are getting a bit too excited. We're in year 2 of a total tear down. Yes the defense needs to be better but we're seeing significant progress on the offensive side of the ball. It's not like most people were expecting much this year right?

In the NFL where you really need a short memory, I think Detroit gives Dallas everything they want and more. Bad teams coming off a bye are good plays. The bye came at the perfect time as they can get healthy.
Dak coming back and yet the line has dropped down to 6.5. I'm surprised Dallas isn't a bigger favorite at home. Coming off the Philly loss it will be interesting to see how they respond.

I was hoping the line would increase. Sharp money on Detroit early.

The way Dallas just terrorized Philly's line I'm not sure why it isn't more either. Goff needs a clean pocket, that's going to be hard to come by this Sunday.

Dallas wouldn’t be the first team to play flat after a big rival.

The Jets just rolled into Lambeau Field and curb stomped the Pack. They are basically in year 2 of a rebuild and crushed it in back to back drafts. The only way it changes for the Lions is if people expect more. And with this player pool, they should expect more. This team really should be 3-2 at this point. I put most of it on the coaching staff.

Any word on Swift coming back this week?

Since you asked:

Swift (shoulder) should practice in a limited fashion Wednesday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Per Campbell, the running back -- who last suited up in Week 3 -- is "a little bit better" following the Lions' Week 6 bye, with Swift's status for Sunday's game against the Cowboys presumably hinging on how well his shoulder responds to the work he's expected to log at practice as the week progresses.

Was hoping he'd be more than "a little bit better" after three weeks off, but hopefully he'll be ready by Sunday.

I'm starting to think that's about as good as he gets. Hopefully he doesn't get injured walking back to his car after practice.

Besides all our needs on defense, RB is going to be another hole to fill next year. I think it would perhaps be better to say we need another quality RB to form a true committee. Swift is unavailable more than you would like over the course of a season.

I'm ok with Holmes drafting these 3 players but the Levi pick was bad because his injury was to his back. You have to stay away from those. I'm not worried about the other 3 long term.

Outside of a few intangibles (bye week/Dak rust/Philly hangover), there is nothing to suggest the Lions can hang with a team that is more talented than New England.

Agree.

But if they score points, they can. They've come the closest to beating Philly. When St. Brown, Chark, Reynolds and Swift were at full strength this offense was humming. With Chark and Reynolds likely out and Swift and St. Brown less than 100%, we are handicapped.

The NE game burst the bubble, but you could sense it coming with all the injuries, the close life sucking losses to Vikes and Hawks and being on the road against a good D. The discouraging part was how thorough the whipping was that they got from NE.

I expect the pass rush to be better with Cominsky's return. Pascal and Jacobs may also contribute. But Harris may not play.

This game will be a good test to see if the team has grit.

not a fan of limiting snaps but Not sure how to handle Swift going forward, even with limited snaps he gets hurt, and he gets hurt in practice. Just seems to be one of those guys who can`t dodge injuries.

True, but the Lions have a knee cap biter. Can Mikey do that?
I just think this game is going to be more about the mano-a-mano and less about the scheming genius, or lack thereof, of the HCs involved. For coaching it's really Ben Johnson v Dan Quinn which seems like a fair match.

There is a good chance Detroit gets rolled but I think they have a puncher's chance to pull this off.

Outside of a few intangibles (bye week/Dak rust/Philly hangover), there is nothing to suggest the Lions can hang with a team that is more talented than New England.

I like Sewell but at this point I kinda wish he was taken earlier as he was projected, then Lions would have ended up with Parsons who I heard was the next one on their draft board. Sewell has been solid no doubt, but Parsons has been a game changer for the Dallas defense.

I'm not sure that's true. I recall a quote from Holmes not too long ago basically saying he'll never take an off ball LB high, he feels there is too much value at that position in the middle rounds. I don't agree personally.

Maybe I am incorrect but I thought I heard that Parsons was next man up. Does not matter now though as it is done.

Holmes should never say never about any player.

If the Lions had taken Carolina's offer of the 8th pick for Stafford, the Lions could have drafted both.
