2025 Detroit Lions: 5-2 Lions beat Bucs with 4th string secondary. (141 Viewers)

Line is back up to -6, it does seem a bit much vs a tough 4-1 Buc team. But the Lions have a history with these "bounce back" games that has been very good vs the spread.
In the last 10 games following a Lions loss, Jared Goff has 26 TDs, 3 interceptions and a 122 QBR.

I'm still concerned because of the injuries in the secondary.

O/U is 53.5 tied for tops.

The Lions have been very good after a loss since the halfway point of Campbell's second season. I wonder the record of the opponents in those games.

I am not saying it is good or bad I really don't know and am just looking for a trend.

Kerby Joseph, Terrion Arnold, and Avonte Maddox all ruled out. So we're down 5 of our top 6 corners including both starters, and our top 3 safeties including both starters. Joseph needs to get healthy and that's more important than this game. But this is just plain crazy.

On a positive note, Dan Campbell said Taylor Decker is trending in the right direction and Alim McNeill will play.

The offense needs to have a big game and everyone is healthy.

This games scares me. If the Lions don't put up 35+ and think their odds of winning are slim.
This is going to be every game just like it has been the past two years when they are not healthy.

The good news is the rumors of trading for an edge are heating up.

They will have their hands full with all 4 starters in the secondary out. Amik Robertson is a quality CB but Rock Ya-Sin is below average. Who knows who the nickel corner will be (maybe Kendall Fuller?). Thomas Harper is starting at one safety but who knows who the other safety will be. No matter who it is, they haven't played together so there will be plays when miscommunication causes someone to be out of position. Fortunately the Bucs are banged up at WR.

The front 7 needs to play great tonight. The Lions are in the top 5 in QB pressures and 6th in sacks and they should get a boost getting Alim McNeill back. Mike Evans will probably play and he is a load. Emeka Egbuka will be a game time decision but if he plays he won't be anywhere close to 100%. My gut says he will not play.

Getting Taylor Decker back is huge. The Lions had to give some help to Skipper and Manu and they won't have to with Decker.

The Lions have one of the best homefield advantages in the NFL and they need to take advantage of it. If they make mistakes like they did against the Chiefs they won't have a chance but if they limit the mistakes I think they will win in a high scoring game.

For the second year in a row, Lions had into their bye coming off an impressive MNF win (though last year it was their offense that impressed against Seattle; this year it's the D).

Upcoming schedule off the bye (Vikes, @Wash) isn't looking nearly as scary as it did before the season. But then there's the Eagles looming the week after that, followed by GB two weeks later. That's going to be true nut-punch time. Hopefully by that point they have most of their guys back healthy

If you'd told me that the Lions only scored 24, I'd have guessed that they lost by 10.
Game definitely could've been more lopsided than it was, but I can't complain much.
Games without consecutive losses goes to 51 (well, really 52). 5th straight MNF win.
Didn't hear McNeil's name too much, but with Baker feeling pressure all night, it was great to have him back.
I'm still learning who Maulet, Whiteside and Hallett are, but secondary was pretty outstanding all things considered.
Branch will be back, and hopefully (at least) Joseph and Reed will be too.

Forward down the field,
A charging team that will not yield.
And when the Blue and Silver wave,
Stand and cheer the brave.
Rah, Rah, Rah.
Go hard, win the game.
With honor you will keep your fame.
Down the field and gain,
A Lion victory!

The DBs played absolutely amazingly !! With Alim back as well it felt like there was pressure coming in all across the front. If we can keep that line fit and start to get DBs back towards end of the regular season our D would be in such good shape. Early going last season when the D was fit we were grinding teams down and beating them without the O really needing to move out of 2nd gear.

Under those conditions I believe we are definitely a top 3 team in the league

Good point on the pressures on defense. As far as "getting home", they are currently tied for 3rd most sacks in the NFL, top 5 on a per game basis.

Needed this win before the bye.

Was shocked that the defense played so well last night. It helped when Evens went down but still was a great effort. AG was watching and probably wishing he stayed, Shepp has done a great job with that group. I never heard of half the guys out there.

I did not like DC going for it early, wanted to go up 10-0. Or maybe it was the play call..fly route to Tessla when they needed 2 yards? Was not close.

Thought the Lions got a fortunate review of that first down catch reversal. NY payback in effect?

Did anyone see whether Campbell was asked to explain that last coach's challenge on Baker's fumble? I still have no idea what he was hoping for with that

I think Dan fully expected a shootout and didn't want to settle for field goals when we had a reasonable distance to go. The play call wasn't bad, and probably would have worked if not for the uncalled hold on Teslaa.

I was pretty surprised by both of the big reversals - the 4th down and the INT. I wouldn't have called either of them indisputable. But, the NFL owed us one, so I'll take it.

That was definitely how I felt in the moment on the INT. I fully expected them to say there wasn't enough evidence to overturn.

With the Otton catch, he was pretty clearly short. I don't totally understand the rules about what is reviewable in a challenge, but from what I can tell they are supposed to review every aspect of the play. I think a lot of the confusion was around how they communicated it?

The line still scares me. A lot of these pressures and sacks are coming against really bad or banged up offensive lines and the numbers feel inflated.

Yes sometimes that promotion isn't all that it cracks up to be when getting a HC position. But glad to see Sheppard making the most of his chance as the new DC for the Lions.

The Lions backup secondary looked really good although it was aided by Baker under throwing and over throwing receivers, mostly due to the pressure he was under. But their coverage was pretty good and they made several nice plays breaking up passes.

Alim McNeil played great despite it being impossible for him to play like that after such an injury.

Jamo will not be asking for a trade.

The Lions are already all-in. They are comfortable with the players they have. There will be no big trades for a splash player barring no more major injuries. The Lions emphasized getting deeper in the offseason and believe they found it in lesser known players.

I appologize for the Lions not doing enough for some fans. Perhaps they should fire Brad Holmes because he does not do with some fans think he should. Everyone except Lions fans seem to think the Lions are legitimate super bowl contentenders.......

Jamo posting a bored meme on Instagram. If this continues I bet he asks for a trade this offseason.
Williams can ask for anything he wants, right now he would be untradable with a new 5 year contract that has not started yet.

The results have not warranted that kind of contract as of yet. No team would take that on and too much dead money for Lions.

The Lions didn't sign Williams to trade him. I think people read too much into posts on social media. Regardless of what he wrote, he plays hard and doesn't take plays off. If there was a problem like that, he would not be on the field.

For now, but keep giving him under five targets a game and see how much more his attitude changes.

His contract is tradable, plus do you really want a guy around as doesn't want to be here (if it comes to that) I wouldn't.

Jamo is a competitor, he isn't going to be okay with not getting the ball. That is what makes these athletes who they are.

We don't know what Jamo will ask for if this continues. No one is saying a big splash, I have said since the offseason to get more depth on the defensive line. I am totally good with them doing another Zadrius Smith type move at the deadline.

You sure are fiesty when they win, but when they lose you are Houdini.

Rumors around the league say the Lions are looking to add at the deadline, but hey you know they are good with what the have.

The Lions win alot, so deal with it. Smith has 1.5 sacks and retired. That would have been an awesome signing. I bet Brad is crying over that one. Everyone the Lions let go has been a disappointment. Sure the Lions are nervous about the injuries piling up and could do something. But it will be bargain shopping. Jamo will be just fine.

What are you talking about. I said find a deal like Zadrius last year. Did he not play the season out with the Lions? Was he not a decent pick up? Why is Brad crying?

The Lions are near the top of the league in sacks and QB pressures. Hutchinson is a beast. Al-Quadin Muhammad has 5 sacks and is in the top 20 in QB pressures. Davenport will be back soon. The Lions value edge rushers that collapse the pocket and maintain gap discipline. Smaller edge rushers are not a good scheme fit. I wouldn't mind another edge rusher but it's not a glaring need imo. I'd rather get a better backup offensive tackle.

As I said that day, it was a bad signing. Period.

They can add both a quality edge and OT.

Try reading what I wrote again and in the offseason I wanted them to sign or trade for any edge. Trade for Parsons or Hendricks great. Sign a mid level guy like Sweat or Bosa, good with that too, sign two cheap guys like Clowney, Zadrius, and Miller. That would be awesome.

But as usual you just make up whatever you want to think or believe because we aren't the kind of fans you want us to be.

I understand that, but I think a couple of nice matchups has skewed it. I don't think they have one of the best pressure units in the league.

Reminds me of Riley Greene. His numbers looked great at the end of the year, but very little of his numbers came when they needed it most. Hopefully I am wrong.

I don't disagree but it's not a glaring enough need to spend a high draft pick to trade for one...and we don't have a 3rd rounder next year. I think the chances of Holmes trading a 1st or 2nd are next to zero because of Decker and Glasgow getting up in years and Decker especially with his recent injury history. I won't be surprised if he retires in the next year or two.

There is a long way to go before the draft and things change fast, but I would not be surprised if both of those picks are offensive linemen.

Has Brad done anything wrong in your eyes?
I'm not Jon but I'll give my opinion. I don't think there have been any glaring mistakes and hindsight is 20-20. There are things I didn't care for at the time, namely trading up to draft Brodrick Martin and Isaac TeSlaa. I'm sure there are more but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

I know you wanted them to trade for a top edge rusher and I disagree because of the cost in picks and salary cap concerns. You thought they should go for it. We will never agree and that's fine. I don't see a point in beating the dead horse again.

In general there are things he could have done but Holmes values keeping his young core more than trading for or signing an expensive player. I agree with it and you didn't and that's fine. We will never agree on everything. There may be a time in the future when I would agree with going for it but I didn't last year.

Holmes is building his team through the draft and wants to keep the young core together. I don't see him signing expensive free agents or trading high picks for one.

EDIT TO ADD: I think he should have added an edge in the draft or in free agency. I didn't mind him resigning Davenport because his guarantee was just a little more than the veteran's minimum but I think he should have signed another one for depth. I think he would have signed Za'Darius Smith but I honestly think he saw that his heart wasn't in it. I think that's more of a reason for his subpar play than anything physical.

First of all, my question was directed to jon because I don't recall him ever saying anything negative. You have.

I'm excited to see how well they are playing. Monday night, with that secondary, was impressive and encouraging.

However, I do think they need to add an edge, maybe a corner and an OT like I think you stated recently.
It's obvious it won't be a huge move. Holmes has shown he has little interest in doing so. But little moves will work too.

I do think the Jamo extension was absolutely terrible. WR's are a dime a dozen. Look around the league.
That money could have been better spent. Nobody can convince me otherwise.

He's the perfect compliment to the other players on the offense though, even if he's not producing big stats. He leaves the middle open for St. Brown, LaPorta, RBs and blocks his *** off. Teams have shown they'd always take the chances with a bunch of underneath passes than giving up big plays.

You wanted Brad to sign Za'Darius this year

Try reading what I wrote again and in the offseason I wanted them to sign or trade for any edge. Trade for Parsons or Hendricks great. Sign a mid level guy like Sweat or Bosa, good with that too, sign two cheap guys like Clowney, Zadrius, and Miller. That would be awesome.

But as usual you just make up whatever you want to think or believe because we aren't the kind of fans you want us to be.

Sorry but you also included Za'Darius in your list and that is all I said. So my statement was factual. Maybe you should read what you wrote. I did not make anything up. Sorry but Brad knows 1000x more about how to run a team than his critics including you.
Has Brad done anything wrong in your eyes?

Of course. But he is batting 0.900 which is 600 points higher than most ever other GM. Shohei gets 3 HRs, strikes out 10 and then does not allow any runs over 6 innings. Let's sit around and just complain about the one hit he gave up, because that is where this discussion is at.

I agree he opens things up, but 28 million and a top 15 pick is a very expensive decoy and I believe they could very easily find someone else that can block and run go routes that is cheaper. Will they be as good as a deep threat? Probably not, but the money saved and used else where will bring a better return IMO. It isn't like if you take Jamo off this team that ARSB and Gibbs will suddenly become average players. Those guys are top guys in the league at their positions and will continue to be with or without Jamo.

My question isn't his value to the team, or if the Lions want to trade him. It is if Jamo will start throwing a fit if his targets and production stays this low. This isn't the 80s anymore and you take your money and do what is asked. I think if this season continues the way it is going and he is 4th or 5th in the pecking order on offense he will ask out in the offseason or shortly into next year if it continues. I also don't expect the Lions to force him the ball, and they shouldn't. They have one of the top offenses in the league and are one of the best teams.

He isn't even close to .900. He just can do no wrong in your eyes and he isn't the best GM in the league. He has another decade and 2 super bowl wins before he can even put his name in that hat.

It takes one bad week to throw someone under the bus, but a friggin decade to recognize greatness. Brad Holmes has already proven to be awesome. The Lions have out drafted every team in the league and it is not even thst close. The Stafford trade brought in a boat load of talent. The Lions have perhaps the best roster in the NFL. This is stupid to even argue
