2025 Matt Bitonti FBG Offensive Line Rankings (1 Viewer)

I fully respect and admire attempts to rank offensive lines. Admittedly though, I take these positional rankings with as much of a grain of salt as anything. Unless you're in the trenches as a coach or player, it's nearly impossible to tell how effective an OL will be or will gel - even if it's chock full of Pro Bowlers.

Always weird different for me and I like it that way.
Titans from about last to 12th is shocking.
If Moore pans out and the young guys play up to their potential it's very possible. Latham and Skoronski are consistently singled out by OL gurus as doing things well for certain snaps but they've gotta stack games.

Atlanta...I thought Arthur built a great line but they just didn't get there yet. He's got em third so I guess he thinks very highly of them.

This is important for FF as everyone seems to want or possibly want a Falcon this year.

To some degree I hear ya.
A lot of the offensive line gurus are all "you don't know ball" and I'm umm that DE went right past him, where's the confusion? It gets me a little defensive when they say this.

I have always gone with charting rushing yards averaged at each position and sacks allowed. I think this paints a good picture. Understand my point of view is selfishly- is the line gonna be a problem for the back or the QB? Will they dominate? I don't need a whole lot.

I found Aaron Brewer fascinating. He's smallish and was a pretty good fill in G for the Titans but as a starting center he was woah bad. I learned a lot when guys spoke of him. It's insane Miami signed him and started him that same off-season that every guru was pointing out all the issues with him being a small center. Still they claim he's not the problem. I watch like five minutes and same ol Aaron.

Someone years ago did point out cold weather and great lines mix well. Really great presentation maybe chase or drinen? Idk but it stuck with me and it's worked well for deciding coin flips in the playoffs.

I love debating Quinton Spain with people. I know him personally and he will even ask me to stop sometimes. He has best ever sacks allowed stats and his rushing ypc are about 4.5 so they're good. College tackle played guard. Bounced around the league, now retired. He's such a great counter to debates about linemen

If you don't know the play call or the scheme, its got to be very difficult to judge performance over the course of a game just from film. It might be obvious on some plays that an OL did a poor job or did well, but in many cases he can look bad because someone else messed up.

Hello Offensive Line fans, it is I, Matt Bitonti here to answer all your questions and concerns about big fat dudes.

This is a fairly accurate statement.
IT is almost impossible in August to tell how good an OL will be in December. You can hope that the good lines stay healthy and you can hope that the bad lines get better but overall it's tough to take preseason predictions and rely upon them all season long. Much like any other position. You wouldn't want to use the pre-draft rankings of WR from June in November.
What (i believe) separates my rankings from others is 1) i'm first on scene releasing OL rankings 2 weeks after the draft in mid May -setting the books so to speak and 2) I update every week 18 weeks a year for injuries and lineups. Other sources grade the games after they happen and that's great I'm the only one on Wednesday telling you what the weekend is going to look like. To that end I am adding a feature comparing defensive front sevens and offensive lines on a weekly basis to find matchups after Week 1. Thanks for reading!

I know you said week 1 rankings so The Buccaneers don’t have Wirfs, but 29th? They were a top 3 offense in 2024 and ran the snot out of the ball.

Where are they once they get him back in a couple weeks?

If you're reading this Matt, just noting a typo - the Packers and Vikings players are transposed.
@mattbitonti
Personally I include Offensive Line rankings on my cheat sheet to help with coin toss decisions on certain players....most notably RB's.
Having said that, the second of the three sections in this article are identical for Rushing and Passing.
Is there any plan to correct this error?
TIA!
Thanks so much for noticing the typos. Ugh. User error, fat fingers. I have given the editors a new version and this should be fixed today.

to respond to this I watch every game condensed every week but do not break down film and grade players like other sources. I also do not assign an individual grade to rookies until they have played. Their grades are based on draft slot and have a natural cap of "B"

My system is less outcomes based and more on resume. I regrade the players quarterly but except for rare rookies like Quenton Nelson or Penei Sewell emerging, it's rare to change the individual grades mid-season. Do some players get inflated grades based on reputation? sure. But I don't know how to downgrade a HOF player like Tyron Smith who plays through a neck injury for 4 years not practicing and still pass blocking like an All pro... until he retires. The bottom line is they aren't giving these jobs away and top LT get as much NIL as top QB in the NCAA. It's rare to have a guy come out of nowhere (Jordan Mailata) and by the time that guy is starting it's not a secret he's a world class athlete.

I hope this was somewhat helpful. I like talking about the line and usually people's eyes just glaze over.

Let me also add that I don't look at other sources so I don't know what is weird. I look at Brandon Thorn for individual grades but I purposely avoid PFF and other OL team rankings because I do not want to taint the well with their opinions.

The model is what it is, it has been more or less the same for 13 years. Sometimes it shocks me too like seeing the Jets above average. for the Titans I like Dan Moore more than most he is a better player than people realize, Skoronski is a stud and Callahan (legendary 5 star OL coach) is whipping this thing into shape. Any team that pays their OL coach over a million dollars it shouldn't be surprising that team gets better in the rankings. Yes I grade the coaches too like a half a starter.

Yeah so with Wirfs an All Pro with perfect cohesion they rank about 4th overall. With Charlie Heck starting at LT they drop to 29th. And I like Charlie Heck by the way. Son of a legend.

This phenomenon does occur because LT (and RT) are weighted positions twice as important as guards. Centers are weighted 1.5 guards for what that's worth.

To be honest they don't have any elite talent other than Wirfs. Give another example Atlanta loses Kaleb McGary only loses a few spots in the rankings. Because 1) McGary wasn't that good (like Wirfs) and 2) the Falcons have Chris Lindstrom another all Pro, Matthews a former PB at LT... That TB room without Wirfs lacks an alpha.

We also don't know it will be a couple weeks. Licht said there's a chance Wirfs could come back after Week 2. But that's a very nebulous statement. I remember the Green Bay people saying similar about David Bakhtiari and that dude never came back. Not saying that's what will happen with Wirfs but I'm in a "show me" mode when it comes to 300+ pound dudes and major leg injuries.

Shocked that the Saints' offensive line is ranked in the Top 10. Most of our fans think the O-line is a glaring weakness.
They keep reloading keep investing and I love moves that allow a player to go back to their natural position

drafting Banks allows Fuaga to go back to natural RT where he can be a PB type player (or better)

I also like the double move by TEN to sign Moore allowing JC Latham to go back to his natural RT position

This summer Cam had all day some snaps. It was shocking. It's been a long long time since a QB had time in TEN. It looks like you're dead on here.
Latham has odd confidence on the right. He put some guys in the dirt, he's smiling and flexing and celebratory. Guy is definitely at home there and way more comfy than the left. He looked like a different player.

It makes me wonder about TE usage from Cincy's former OC. If they don't have to have a TE helping, then what? And Pollard, he is creative and makes something out of nothing far too often in his career. What's he like if they have a line that wins regularly? 100 years ago, he looked great when Dallas had that. Soon after Dallas went thru injuries on the OL and he's been the creative determined guy ever since. I'd like to see him get some easy snaps for a change.

Does Miami's GM not realize how injury prone Tua is?
:lmao:
After additions to our secondary, OL is officially Miami's weakest position.

Grier has tried ... but his 2nd round tradeups haven't worked out, Eichenberg and now Jonah Savaiinaea who seems like he'll need time, but showed up in game 3 vs 2nd and 3rd stringers. RG Daniels is an improvement and hopefully Austin Jackson is healthy because he's in the average range. LT Patrick Paul who was awful last year has looked very good thus far. Lots of ifs, We'll see by game 2 how much improved the oline is. Tua's fast release and decision making will be tested.

I lament the one who got away, Penei Sewell.
