2025 Team Defense & Defense by Committee Thread (5 Viewers)

Own Carolina but in a must win week and thinking of dropping them for TN against the hapless jets. Someone talk me off the ledge.

Dallas offense scares me this week.

Debating this move myself. Looking at their schedule, Denver really doesn’t have any decent matchups for a few weeks. And even then, none of the matchups look as good as these first 3 games. I generally avoid rostering 2 defenses this early in the year. So I’m probably going to make this move.

I would try my best to retain Car DST if you can, aside from tough matchups in weeks 4, 10, 15, 16. I like them the rest of the way.

If they ball out against Dallas?  They will be upgraded to matchup proof status and my streaming days will be over! 

For ref, I dropped Laviska Shenault(my top sleeper, who hit the snooze) over Car DST to get a Streaming DST(IND, MIA, GB, CIN, TEN) to avoid Car toughest match this season. 

But yea, Ten is definitely better, considering the Week 4 matchups.

Really tough to carry two defenses in my short bench league. And my WRs are weak, so it’s tough to drop one from my bench. 
 

I ended up dropping Car and grabbing TN. It’s a bold move and maybe the wrong one. But I’m staring 0-4 in the face and needed a win this week, and I think it puts me in the best position. Jets have been truly awful and dishing out points to defense.

 
I picked up Ten against the Jets, but I really don't feel confident about it. Yes the Jets stink, but Titans defense does too. 

 
I went back on my keeping of Denver. They seem like a good defense but not sure if they're worth keeping a roster spot for. Might be a mistake but with their upcoming schedule, I don't think people will be running to grab them.

Denver DEF has balled out thus far, but playing NYG/JAX/NYJ may be giving a false sense of security. The Ravens this weekend will probably be a litmus test as to how good the defense is.  

I'm also considering dropping DEN due to a tougher schedule the next few weeks, although the only other viable options on my waiver wire are CIN (vs JAX) and CHI (vs DET). Kind of thinking of holding on to DEN to see what they can do. At Denver, may be tough sledding for Lamar.

 
I'm rolling with Denver in my one league, like others have stated, they have been playing great but played some stinky teams. Ravens are tough but I think Lamar makes some silly mistakes and sometimes scrambles when he shouldn't causing some sacks. As long as they can contain him for the most part I think the Denver defense will be ok. (Easier said then done).

This kind of scenario seems to come up 5-6 times a year. Really bad, turnover prone offense versus lousy defense. I have never seen data on it - I can’t back this up but - in my experiences, it usually doesn’t work out. Maybe 1/5th or 1/4th or 1/3rd of the time it does, it’s def a nonzero chance.

The thing is, because I’ve never tried to do a study on my own, and I don’t really understand what the determining factors might be, I just try to avoid it. Just from a range of outcomes perspective, I’m not getting any kind of an edge picking up that defense.

We’ve seen a bad Jets team. But I’m not sure we’ve seen a Jets team as bad as this Jets team.

I tried to get the Titans but someone else got them.

Had to pick between the Bears and Bengals.  Went Bengals cause they have several juicy matchups coming.

I tend to agree.  Not to mention, it's on the road (for TEN).  I mean, sure.... somebody from TEN could easily return an INT for a score or something.  But, it's just as feasible that the TEN defense, which hasn't been great, gives up 17-20 points and doesn't really do much in the sack/turnover department, either.  

Of the defenses that are mostly available in the leagues where I'm sort of streaming (I've gone with NE up until this point in most leagues, but going to start streaming now), I like the following....

CIN - I like the matchup, but part of that is that I like what the CIN offense is doing.  Compared to CHI, for example.  If your offense can't stay on the field, it makes it hard for ANY defense to sustain 60 minutes of dominant play.  For that reason, CIN is my top choice.  And, CIN has some nice matchups upcoming on weeks where I would need them (paired with NE)... @DET, @NYJ, etc.  

MIA - Probably not available in most leagues, but I'm mentioning them because they are in one of mine.  I like the matchup against IND mainly because Wentz looks like a complete disaster right now against mediocre to poor defenses (SEA and TEN).  MIA should completely chew him up and spit him out.  And, I really like MIA's upcoming schedule, with three of their next five matchups (after IND) being @JAC and ATL and HOU at home.

DAL - If you can't get CIN, and MIA is not available, I am really liking DAL as an option.  I think McCaffrey's absence last week was masked by the fact that CAR was playing HOU with Davis Mills at QB.  Against a good team with a better offense, losing McCaffrey would have likely cost them the game.  Well, this week, the absence of CMC is going to be not only noticeable, it's going to make it very difficult for CAR to stay in the game.  Dallas is going to score, and I can see CAR falling behind and having to become somewhat one-dimensional.  When they do, look for a DAL forced turnover or two, possibly for a score.  

TEN - Their defense hasn't been great, but it's still the Jets, who look abysmal.  You could do much worse than starting the Titans defense this week.

GB - Nothing helps a defense get right like a big helping of Big Ben and that brutal PIT O-Line.  Another game where I can envision a pick-six late in the game to break it wide open.  

I debated between DET and CHI, in terms of which one I like more.  Bottom line... I think both are decent options if you have to, but I'm not sprinting to grab either one.  CHI has a problem with their offense not being able to sustain drives of any kind, which will make it tough on the defense.  And, quite frankly, I like how DET has looked thus far this season.  I do think this would be the week to pick for Goff to struggle, and for that reason, I'm ranking CHI at home just barely ahead of DET.  

If you have to, though, anybody against the CHI offense isn't a bad option, and I would play the DET defense this week over at least half of the other defenses in the NFL.

I was debating the same.  I am going the other way with DET.

That's where I come down as well. I'm generally going to prefer a good D with a bad matchup over the opposite. One of the reasons I'm sticking with Carolina this week.

The other thing to keep in mind is that when you don't have any great options, you're basically just hoping for a D that can get you high single digits. Whether they get 6 or 9 is not likely to determine your match-up. As long as they don't hang negative points on you, you should be fine.

Turnovers tend to be more random, so that's why I gravitate toward Ds that can generate more sacks. I figure if they can get me 3-4 sacks, 1-2 TOs and a couple more points from PA, that's about the best I can hope for.

 
After picking up TEN vs Jets, I ended up switching to Dallas v Carolina not only because CMC being out will change Carolina's offense but I don't trust TEN defense at all. And I like Dallas' next 3 weeks. Carolina, Giants and NE. Hopefully I won't have to stream a defense until their bye week after NE. 

 
So, with all the options being mentioned, Dallas, Ten, Det, Miami, would you start any of these over Baltimore this weekend against Denver?

Personally I wouldn't, This goes back to the good defense in a not so great matchup. Denver looked good on offense but they were playing some really bad teams overall and their defense gave them good field position. I think Denver offense can be exploited. 

 
Someone in my league dropped the Patriots due to facing Tampa Bay this week. Mulling a pre-emptive add before their schedule gets easy again.

I’m not sure there schedule looks as easy as I thought it would a couple weeks ago. And their offense certainly doesn’t seem to put them in great position with some short fields.

We’ll see. They still have some plus matchups, but I’m still not convinced they are a set it and forget it defense all year.

Like Dallas upcoming matchups. Considering bears at home vs Lions.

TN has nice matchup on paper but defense stinks and could be w/o brown and Julio. I think it's more likely a "get right" game at home for Wilson.

 
So I ended up putting in a bid for NO and won. I kind of regret it now cause I'm also holding DEN.

I honestly don't think the Ravens match up is as bad as I thought. Broncos are at home and lesser defenses have put up 7 points in a row vs BAL the past 3 weeks. I would have been okay with that. Then I could just start DEN vs PITT and maybe even hold for the LV match up since it's a division game and will be played hard.

To be fair, the Saints have been playing well. Had a mediocre week 2 but was missing Lattimore and bunch of coaches. For now I guess I'll just go ahead and play the Saints this week since I already paid, then reevaluate.

Exactly where I was being forced to do. However, with Tee Higgins going on OUT status I can move him to the IR position and pick up another defense to match with NE ... until week 14 if I pick MIA.

Definitely a consideration going forward and this week. CAR without CMC will look completely different. Several juicy matchups as long as the offense keeps clicking along. Bias aside for Jerry Jones and "Americas Team" of yesterday I think these Cowboys will be in the hunt the whole way. Too many good playmakers and Dak looks good, very good. I still went MIA this week as Wentz continues his struggles. IND knew what they were getting.

I did that in my league. I still have the Broncos D but there was no way I was going with the Pats D against the GOAT in his return to NE. I grabbed the Bengals and will roll with them tonight against Jax. No doubt someone in my league will scoop up the Pats D off waivers before I can grab them back. 

 
Been holding NE...would have dropped for Buffalo (who someone inexplicably dropped) but that went early in waivers this week.  FA right now are Indy, Miami, SF, Pitt and Washington...with Carolina and AZ on waivers til Saturday morning.

I am not in a position at the moment to drop anyone other than my defense...

Thinking I roll with Indy for a few weeks as I can get them now to cover for NE.  If NE clears back waivers I can see on picking them back up or grabbing one of the others that remains.

Odd in this league that so many D's are there...likely several people streaming it seems while WR/RB/TE is scarce.

I'm rolling with Denver in one of my leagues. As long as the Broncos focus on containing Lamar's running I think they can take advantage of this matchup. And with the secondary they have, I think they will be able to play more one on one coverage in order to shadow Lamar. 

 
Bengals Elevate Safety From Practice Squad to Help Fill in for Jessie Bates Against Jaguars

They're going to have to do it without their best player. Star safety Jessie Bates won't play due to a neck injury he suffered in Cincinnati's 24-10 win over Pittsburgh in Week 3.

Bengals will be without two key players for Thursday night's game against Jaguars

More good news is that cornerback Trae Waynes is set to make his long-awaited debut with the Bengals after missing the entire 2020 season and the first three games of the 2021 season with injuries. The 11th overall pick in the 2015 draft, Waynes was a full-time starter during his final three seasons with the Vikings. He penned a three-year, $42 million deal with the Bengals in March of 2020. 

The Bengals also announced that cornerback Chidobe Awuzie (groin) and guard Xavier Su'a-Filo (knee) are doubtful after both players missed practice throughout the week. Darius Phillips, who also appeared on the team's injury report this week with a hand injury, is slated to replace Phillips if he is inactive on Thursday night.

What will be the likely impact from Bates & Awuzie missing in action tonight? I also see that Trae Waynes is slated to play tonight. Should I be worried about streaming the Bengals Defense tonight?

 
On the positive side the Bengals Defense has been very solid over the first three weeks:

In theory, Waynes is an upgrade at CB.  Bates will hurt but if the front 7 keep playing well, the secondary should hold up.  

 
I've got Cincy in right now, but my spidey sense is up for a trap game outcome with Bates out. Dallas (vs. Car) is sirening to me from the free agent pool. Not sure if I have the stones to switch. Brain says stick with Cincy, but something just doesn't feel right.  :unsure:

Bengals are missing a starting CB and starting safety.  I just dropped them for the Cowboys.

Did the same about 30 min ago. Wishing us both luck. Such a crap shoot, these streaming D calls - especially on Thursdays! I could see the Bengals scoring anywhere from negative points to 20+ tonight, depending on the amount of fight in Lawrence to prove he's not a bust. Marvin Jones Jr. is also back tonight after an inglorious exit from Cincy and Carlos Hyde is out, which could be addition by subtraction if it means more opps for Robinson. My gut says the Jags aren't going to just roll over. Too early in the season for that.

That landmine passed, now I gotta decide between DAL (v. CAR) or BAL (@ DEN).
