2025 Team Defense & Defense by Committee Thread (2 Viewers)

Sure it was against Trevor Simeon, and most of the points came off a defensive TD, but bottom line is the Eagles D continues to put up points. 30, 4, 20, 11 (your scoring may vary) over the past month. They seem to smash on good matchups (Lions, Denver) and get smoked in bad ones (Chargers). Good news is their schedule is looking rather soft down the stretch. I picked them up last week to potentially cover for the Pats in week 13 when the face Buffalo (Eagles get the Jets), but with a plus playoff schedule they could be useful from here on out.

GIF Horse: What’s wrong with the Broncos’ run defense? (November 19)

Broncos coach Vic Fangio said he expects OLB Bradley Chubb to return to practice this week.

Chubb hasn't played since Week 2 when he initially suffered the ankle injury. He was forced to undergo surgery to remove a bone spur shortly after and has been sidelined ever since. Chubb's return will be more than welcome by a defense that recently traded its best playmaker to Los Angeles. Chubb totaled 7.5 sacks in 14 games last year.

Grabbed CHI and DAL to pair thru the rest of the season. Hoping that works.  Cupboard looking bare on the WW.

I've got DAL and Carolina.  Rams are available so I was looking to pair them with one of the two.

Any ideas on a good place to see combined schedules for Def by committee?

I have NE and Tenn. NE I like overall. Tenn I like the matchups.

I'm putting in for Chicago tonight. Not for much but enough to block one guy from getting them (he's low on FAAB and has a player I want with no good DST for the week). Also putting in for the Colts for their wk13 matchup. So I might end up with 4 defenses after Waivers runs 🤣

What’s the thought on the Minnesota Vikings defense? SF in week 12, but very good matchups weeks 13-15 (Det,Pit,Chi).

I have NE and trying to choose between MIN or SF as a backup.  NE has a bye week 14 (MIN v. PIT/SF v. CIN) but both, MIN and SF, have great upcoming schedules and it would double as keep-away from league mates.

Probably going with SF.

Packers Film Study: Secondary struggles with takeaway opportunities vs Vikings

Packers' inept red-zone defense again no match for crafty Vikings

Packers defense slips against Kirk Cousins, Vikings

Excerpts:

Green Bay's defense toppled star quarterbacks Kyler Murray, Patrick Mahomes and Russell Wilson in impressive fashion in the past three games, picking up the slack for an offense that's used to carrying the Packers.

Kirk Cousins, Justin Jefferson and the rest of a potent Vikings offense sent the Packers back to the drawing board.

Cousins threw for 341 yards and three touchdowns — including 169 yards and two scores by Jefferson — and directed two go-ahead drives in the final seven minutes for the Vikings in a 34-31 victory on Greg Joseph's 29-yard field goal as time expired.

“Just came down to miscommunication and execution,” said Green Bay linebacker Preston Smith, who had two sacks. “We know what we've got to do. We know what’s the assignment each and every week. I think it was probably some miscommunication on the back end, and it caused them to get open a couple times. We just can’t let him get hot. He got hot, and he did what he had to do to help his team.”

The Packers entered the week third in the NFL in fewest points and fewest yards allowed. The Vikings finished with 408 yards and averaged 6.2 yards per play on Sunday.

“We knew it was an explosive offense,” Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur said. “They've got two premier receivers. Dalvin Cook, he’s a premier back, and I think Kirk Cousins is a premier quarterback. So that’s quite a tandem that they have across the board. I think their O-line did a nice job. It’s a good offense, and they got the better of us today.”

The defense was missing Rashan Gary, the team’s top pass rusher, because of an elbow injury.

Cornerback Jaire Alexander hurt his shoulder in Week 5 and went on injured reserve. Outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith hasn’t played since the season opener because of a back injury. Both Alexander and Smith were Pro Bowl picks last year.

Whitney Mercilus, Smith’s replacement, tore his biceps last week and will miss the rest of the season.

This short-handed defense had no answer for Cousins, Jefferson and Adam Thielen.

'He's a G': Healthy Derwin James embracing leadership role on Chargers' defense

Brandon Staley and Chargers in a rush to improve last-ranked run defense ( November 18 )

Excerpt:

The 2021 Chargers are fourth against the pass but rank last in rushing yards permitted. Only two teams have surrendered a higher conversion rate on third down.

Among the 10 worst defenses in average points allowed per game, the Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders are the only teams with winning records.

Still, Staley said he’s encouraged given the schedule the Chargers have played and how the defense is trending nine games into the season.

“I’m proud of our guys because I think that we’re improving,” he said. “As a coach, you know what you see on a daily basis and you know the way it should look. It’s getting closer to being that way.”

The most consistent issue has been a run defense that has allowed three 100-yard rushers. Seven of the Chargers’ past eight opponents have run the ball at least 30 times, helping lead to some glaring disparities in time of possession.

But in their three most recent games, the Chargers have limited the opposition to 3.8 yards per carry. On Sunday against Minnesota, they had three tackles for loss against the run.

Forcing negative plays has been one of Staley’s recent points of emphasis, the logic being that pushing the offense backward would lead to longer third-down situations.

Of the Vikings’ 14 third downs, nine required them to gain at least seven yards. Six were 10 yards or more. The Chargers prevented Minnesota from converting six of its first seven third downs.

“I like the way that we are playing on third-and-five-plus,” Staley said. “... I’m optimistic about how we’re playing. I think that the product that we’re putting on the field is more of what I’m used to seeing.”

I offered Bears for Michel and this dude still won't take it. He countered with Michel for Ridley. Not sure what his game is. I've been asking for a handcuff all year and offered decent players that will definitely score him points that immediate week. But he's holding tight.

Anyway side rant over.

Would love opinions.  I am trying to line up safe D for the rest of the year and playoffs (which I am in the hunt for).

This week I'm rolling Texans vs NYJ.  I got 49ers and Saints on the bench for ROY.  But I also have a claim in on AZ D replacing 49ers.  Between AZ/Saints I think I can run the rest of the year.  Thoughts?

Maybe he values Michel more than the Bears? You obviously do, as you offered the trade.  Why’s it so unreasonable for him to have a similar mind-set?

He hasn't started him all year. I own Henderson, so obviously I value him more. He's on the playoff cusp. A loss drops him out and a win puts him a spot. He put in a bid for Chicago also but I out bid him. He tries for the hot matchup each week for defense.

I mean it's his choice. I would think a backup RB you'll never start for any of the guys I offered would be worth it. Also it's redraft, not dynasty.

Again just a rant that happens to relate to DST.

I personally wouldnt take a one week defense rental for one of the top handcuffs in the game. RBs are dropping like flies every week.

Id trade Ridley for him if you have good WR depth. Michel and Ridley are both speculative play but one guy is on an NFL roster right now and one isnt.

I'd guess you wouldn't start him all year, either, unless Henderson got hurt.  And if Henderson got hurt, he'd likely have him as a a viable starting option.

It relates to DST, but a streaming DST is not as valuable as a RB, even "just a handcuff/".  If they were, they wouldn't be available on the WW.

It just doesn't make sense to look at another guy, who values a RB over a DST, the same as you do, and be like "he's being unreasonable."

Fair enough

I am rolling Texas this week,  Then rotating between Cardinals and Saints the rest of the season.  Hoping I done good cause I have a chance.

Birds defense has been pretty great recently.  They have Gints, Jets, Wash, Gints, Dallas left. Might continue with them for the rest of the season.  Have started them the last couple weeks and have not regretted it.

Starting Dallas this week. Looked at Houston vs. Jets, but Dallas is ranked so much higher that I just can’t see going the Houston route. Right?

Does Goff starting change your mind about starting CHI?
It does. Not because Goff is that good but because he is an NFL QB. If Boyle was in there Chicago was the top play of the week. I heard someone say Tim Boyle's college stats on the radio the other day and I couldn't believe it. He threw 1 TD and 13 ints in 19 games at Connecticut. How did he ever get an NFL job?

Really? After Houston they have a bye then NE and ARI. LV in week 17 isn't terrible but they basically have 3 unusable weeks after next week.
I’m not as afraid of NE or LV. And doubt Cards will be the same as early in the year but I’ll have a backup that week. Best of the options I had. Niners were just cut too

Bucs DT Vita Vea (knee) returned to practice Thursday.

A Thursday practice -- even the limited variety -- is a good sign that Vea will be back in Tampa's starting lineup this week against the Colts. He missed the team's Week 11 win over the Giants after suffering a knee injury the previous week against Washington. Vea is a key to the team's run-stuffing defensive front.

Steelers activated Minkah Fitzpatrick off the reserve/COVID-19 list.

It's excellent news for the Pittsburgh defense a week after they were diced up by Justin Herbert on Sunday Night Football. The injury-riddled Steelers defense gets a boost with Fitzpatrick's return for their Week 12 game against the Bengals.

Saints were just dropped --kinda like their playoff schedule: Miami and Carolina at home, at Atl
Hmmm, guy who is 10 -1 in our league dropped the Bills for WFT....

So Saints and Bills available -- seems crazy not to try and grab the Bills, no?

Weeks 15-17:

Bills : Car; @NE, Atl

NO: @TB, Mia, Car

I'm also hording Bmore, Tenn and GB right now ---🤒

Dallas D is trending down. That Pollard return saved them from an unmitigated disaster. I wouldn’t have much confidence in them going forward, at least until Gregory gets back. Love it for my Dak shares of course.

I never bought into them as this great D anyway. Their scoring was inflated due to all of the Diggs pick sixes, which was unsustainable. Their peripheral numbers were always a bit suspect.

Pittsburgh getting healthy again. I wouldn't ignore then this week like everyone is seeming to do. For some reason people ignore injuries to any position except QB when picking a defense (whether it be injuries to the d or opposing oline).

T.J. Watt (knee, hip) was removed from Pittsburgh's final injury report.

Steelers will have S Minkah Fitzpatrick, DE Isaiahh Loudermilk, and Watt all back for Sunday's divisional tilt against the Bengals. Although Joe Haden remains questionable with a foot injury, the Steelers will presumably have enough firepower back on defense to hang around regardless of the veteran's status.
