2025 Team Defense & Defense by Committee Thread (5 Viewers)

Vikings placed DE Everson Griffen on the reserve/NFI list.

Girffen has acknowledged struggling with his mental health in the past and will take a leave of absence to work on it again after he posted videos of himself acting erratically while holding a gun, reportedly calling 911 and telling responders that he had fired it inside his home. Griffen eventually left his home peacefully and no one was hurt.

Bills CB Tre'Davious White suffered a torn ACL in Week 12 against the Saints.

It's a disastrous loss for Buffalo's top-ranked defense as White, an All-Pro in 2019 (first team) and 2020 (second team), had started 72-of-72 games in his career since entering the league in 2017. He had registered 41 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery along with a half a sack prior to injury this year, allowing the Bills to be creative on defense since his side of the field was always accounted for. His absence leaves big shoes to fill for Levi Wallace, Taron Johnson, and Siran Neal.

Our league scoring accounts for a lot of items for DSTs.

  • Points Allowed (standard +10 to -4 range)
  • Yards Allowed (similar to PA)
  • DefensIve TD 6
  • KR PR TD 6
  • Blocked Kick 2

Dallas had -8 for 36 PA and 509 YA, 6 for Pollard’s KR TD, 3 Sacks, 4 TFL for 1.0,  3 3nOuts for 1.50 = 3.50 (-8+6+3.0+1.0+1.5)

That’s a brutal week for a DST in our format.

Patriots had 2 TDs, 4 interceptions, 7 Sacks, 7 TFL, 6 3nOuts, 2 4th Down Stops, 0 Points Allowed, 100-199 Yards Allowed. And because it’s FF, the dude lost the weekly matchup.

Low Score All Time: (-8.00) Week 10 2017, MIA (@ CAR)

Dolphins gave up 45 points and 548 yards, with zero pints to offset. And because it’s FF, the dude won the weekly matchup. #truestorybro

We've used this system since 2011, I love it and our league thinks it is great.

Pittsburgh getting healthy again. I wouldn't ignore then this week like everyone is seeming to do. For some reason people ignore injuries to any position except QB when picking a defense (whether it be injuries to the d or opposing oline).
I like them this week. Always prefer good defenses vs average offenses

Birds defense has been pretty great recently.  They have Gints, Jets, Wash, Gints, Dallas left. Might continue with them for the rest of the season.  Have started them the last couple weeks and have not regretted it.
This seemed like a good idea at the time

I added and started them this week

2 pts

Have Fins and Pats so feeling pretty good. Except they both have a Week 14 bye.

Panthers (v ATL) or Titans (v Jax) seem like the best play? Tough to trust Tennessee.

DST is the stat that changes the most drastically from league to league. Chicago got 12 in my league whereas Dallas got 2.
Probably depends on whether your league awards points for kick return TDs. The Dallas defense finished with -1 points, but because I got credit for Pollard's TD, I got 5 out of them (of course, I was facing Pollard, so it was a wash)

Picked up Arizona in two leagues. Since they were on bye (and since Yahoo allows you to drop bench guys who have already played), I didn't have to wait for waivers. They've been a good DST all year and have Chicago coming up.

Meanwhile, lots of good matchups coming up this week:

  • LAR vs Jax (80% rostered, but may have been dropped coming off bye/GB)
  • Minn @ Det
  • Philly @ NYJ
  • KC vs Den (especially if Teddy is out)
  • Indy vs Hou

Seattle's defense is playing better and has some good matchups down the road.

Will be watching this game tonight to see if SEA as a team has a pulse. If they do and they can turnaround the offense, their playoff schedule weeks 16 and 17 look great: CHI & DET.

Both at home.

If they lose tonight though the whole season could be down the drain and they could be mailing it in come week 16.

Picked up Eagles the other week for their week 13 matchup with NYJ. After yesterday’s showing having 2nd thoughts. Wtf happened there?

Was the mighty Jordan Howard the linch pin holding the run game together?

Pat bros still standing tall. Started them over cowboys. Probably going to sit them against Bills for Cowboys (despite them sucking again... I think with all Cowboys weapons back they do better). However, don't fault any Pat bros for starting them this week. This is the #1 defense, grats again guys.

GB defense also still looks very good. Glad I started them over Saints. Feel confident starting them against solid Os.

Dude --thanks for this!  Week 12 in Yahoo and I didn't realize you could do that! Just snagged them. No wonder I'm near last place 🤨

Washington vs. Seahawks score: Ron Rivera's defense stuffs Russell Wilson as Washington wins third in a row

Excerpt:

Why Washington won

Let's start with the defense. Ron Rivera's signature unit has come on in recent weeks, at certain points flummoxing both Tom Brady and Cam Newton, but it looked in near-peak form against Wilson. Seattle barely even tried to run the ball, but when it did, Washington's front was suffocating. The pass rush, meanwhile, wasn't astounding, but everything on the back end was, with DK Metcalf completely erased from action, Landon Collins producing a key forced fumble and a half-dozen other guys getting their hands on downfield shots from Wilson. Things got dicey at the very end, but Kendall Fuller stepped up to thwart a last-minute comeback with a pick on Seattle's two-point try to tie it.

Panthers placed CB Donte Jackson (groin) on injured reserve.

The Panthers will be without Jackson, a starting corner, for at least three weeks. Jackson has two interceptions through Week 12 and has been graded by Pro Football Focus as Carolina's second best coverage corner.

The Panthers are on a bye week.

Miami Dolphins defense continues to dominate offenses (FanSided article with autoplay video)

What they expected all along: Jaelan Phillips (three sacks) leads dominating Dolphins D

Excerpt:

MIAMI GARDENS — It was good. Cornerback Xavien Howard knew that much about the performance by the Dolphins’ defense Sunday. The scoreboard, which showed only 10 points allowed, told him that.

But when asked about how the defense rattled Carolina quarterback Cam Newton, Howard was perplexed.

“What you mean?” he said to a reporter.

Newton completed only five passes all day, Howard was told.

“Oh, damn,” Howard said.

Yes, the defense really was that dominant. When the Dolphins played their most complete game of the year Sunday in a 33-10 rout, the defense upheld its end and then some. The Dolphins recorded three takeaways, five sacks, seven tackles for loss, 11 quarterback hits and 10 passes defensed.

Newton and P.J. Walker combined to complete just 10 of 31 passes with three interceptions for a rating of 13.4, the worst in the NFL this season. It's also the lowest rating allowed by the Dolphins since 2003 vs. Buffalo, which had a 10.3 rating.

“I think it’s a defensive performance we expect out of ourselves,” said rookie safety Jevon Holland, who jumped a route to record his second interception.

It may have been what the defensive players expected, but it’s not what they lived through the first eight games of the season, which included just one win. The Dolphins are on a four-game winning streak now, with the defense having its fingerprints all over the turnaround.

Points allowed per game has been slashed from 29.1 the first eight games to 11.5 the past four. As Newton found out, the biggest difference is in pass defense. Opponents were averaging 291.1 yards per game but are now managing 205.3. Sacks have gone from a total of 12 in eight games to 16 over the past four.

“I feel like it’s just the confidence that we have,” Howard said. “Everything is clicking. We’re going on the right path.”

First-round pick Jaelan Phillips is. Phillips is showing why he was the first edge rusher to come off the board in this year’s draft. He now has at least a share of a sack in four consecutive games, although if any game can be called his breakout performance, this was it. Phillips had three sacks, giving him 6.5 for the season, and finished with four tackles, three tackles for loss, four quarterback hits and a pass defensed.

“I think he’s just getting better every week,” coach Brian Flores said. “I think for a lot of guys on this team, we just keep working, keep trying to improve and get better every day. If you do that, we’re starting to see some of the fruits of that work. Jaelan’s no different. He’s in here early, he says late, he does a good job in meetings, walk-throughs, practice.”

Flores said for much of this season, Phillips has done his share of dirty work, allowing others to cash in with flashy statistics.

“A lot of times we’re running games and he’s the pick guy and somebody else comes free and today, I didn’t know how many he had — I didn’t know it was three — but good for him and obviously, good for our team.”

Yeah, I picked up LAR a week ago for this. Need to look a week ahead and down the stretch.

Time to kick the Steelers defense to the curb.  People only have them because of reputation.

Considering the Packer D down the playoff stretch in a big league where there isn't much left.  Weeks 15-17 are at BAL, then vs CLE and MIN. The Ravens offense is in a 3 game funk, but will it continue?  All 3 games are outdoors and weather could be a factor, helping the defense.

Grabbed Indy a couple weeks ago for this week's matchup against Houston.

Grabbed Denver for Next week against Det in Denver.

After that I think I'm riding with NE despite the tough matchups against Indy and Buff. They might be the best defense in football this year.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports Mike Glennon is expected to start Week 13 against the Dolphins.

Glennon appeared in one game earlier this season, going 16-of-25 for 196 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions against the Cowboys in Week 5.

What about the NO defense? Week 14 at Jets, week 16 Miami and week 17 Carolina.

Thinking of dropping Baltimore for them since the Ravens playoff schedule is not great with GB and Rams.

Definitely have my eye on NO.

Think the fact that their offense has been terrible has been holding them back. With Hill inserted at QB and Kamara back I think that D turns it around a bit.

I like their home matchups vs MIA and CAR weeks 16 and 17 for sure. CAR matchup in the championship game could be sweet...that team is dead.

They'll probably look horrible again against Dallas tmrw night. Good. Keep them on the waiver wire for now.

I may grab them just prior to tmrw night's game.

As someone who has been riding the Pats, GB makes a nice pair. They get the Bears at home next week (to cover for NE bye), then that week 16 home matchup with CLE is looking nice with the way Baker is playing. Playing in that weather at Lambeau tends to be a boost for their D. Plus they are proving to be just a pretty solid D in real life this year.  I think they’re a bit underrated.

Trying to make sense of the enigma that is the LAR D.

Had been a set it and forget it D, but I think that may have been more of a function of playing cruddy teams early in the season. Now it seems they are getting pushed around in the trenches and as usual, they are vulnerable up the middle. D only seems to perform when they can get a lead and then pin their ears back.

This week vs JAX I'd expect them to get healthy and for A. Donald and V. Miller to show up. After that...not sure.

Eyeballing the playoff schedule and I"m not sure I'm interested. Just dropped...and I may not even bother.

Fellow Pats owner myself who is considering other options this week as well. So tough to bench though as they have been just wrecking teams on a weekly basis. Bills matchup is tough though. If they pass this test, have to think you just roll them out every week going forward.

As an Iggles fan, any thoughts on the Birds vs the Jets this week? Grabbed Philly a few weeks ago with his matchup in mind, but last week’s showing vs the GMen did give me pause. You chalking that up to division matchup weirdness? Before that game they had been pretty consistently smashing in good spots, while getting gashed by good teams.

Eagles defense has been coming around. They weren't the reason we lost last week other than we can't get consistent pressure on the QB. A rookie like Wilson could yield some sacks though and obviously turnovers. Should be a solid play.

Dallas managers, what are you thinking this week? I picked them up coming off their bye and assumed I had a plug-and-play ROS, but truth is, outside of the Atlanta game they've been a far better NFL D than fantasy one. This week, I was feeling pretty good about the Siemian match-up, but Hill introduces a new risk, plus Kamara could be back. There's also the wildcard of the Covid outbreak the team is currently experiencing, both in terms of the players and coaches who will be out tomorrow night, as well as general chaos and distraction it might be causing.

I'm considering dropping Darrel Williams to pick up the Minny D as a streamer.

Looking to line up a couple defenses for my fantasy playoffs weeks 16&17. I'd like to take into consideration week 15 as I play a team that I am a game behind and we have a best record bet going...but 16&17 are the focus.

Right now I have NO. Which two would you prefer?

Here are the teams and their 15-17 opponents:

NO:  TB  MIA  CAR

SF: ATL  TEN  HOU

PHI: WAS  NYG  WAS

LAC: KC  HOU  DEN

JAX: HOU  NYJ  NE

Can JAX be trusted? If so, that SF and JAX combo looks nice with a HOU, NYJ, HOU finish to the schedule.

I dropped them outright in two leagues because of all of what you mention. Went ARI in one league and then pulled the trigger on BAL rising in the other. DAL had a great run and perhaps it continues on. I also picked up Taysom Hill in the same two leagues. He probably won't start in either league unless Hurts looks more iffy. Josh Allen is already locked in. Oh, probably dropping Bass because of windy weather in BUF on MNF for Succup or Butker.

MIN D is a good streamer this week for sure!
