2025 Team Defense & Defense by Committee Thread (3 Viewers)

Tremendous amount of D/ST to start as very good options in week 14. I'm questioning my strategy of not streaming unless you have a top 3 D/ST.

I'm seeing NO, LAC, GB, TEN, DAL, DEN, SEA all FA. Gonna cut BUF loose.
I've had New England all year and I also managed to grab Buffalo and enjoyed several big weeks from them but it's time to drop them and I have the Pats on a Bye, gotta keep them on the roster of course.

CLE, SEA, TN all there in one of my leagues. LAC as well,

Not sure which one I will grab, hate to bet against Jackson, Seattle isn't that good and I could see a let down. Titans get JAX but I've seen them projected in the 20s on some sites, not an auto Top 5 performance

Looks like LAC and DEN are my best possible options.  We shall see what I land when waivers run.

Seattle defense with a good matchup for week 14:

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said Davis Mills is expected to start in Week 14 against Seattle.

Is Mills really much of a downgrade? He has similar stats to Taylor. I was burned by him earlier this season.
With the way Taylor's been playing, Mills isn't a downgrade at all. But the complete lack of any rushing attack for the Texans allows teams to scheme for passing and neither of these QBs are stellar. As a Cooks owner I'm feeling the sting.

Seattle is a great defense to roll out this week.

Why is this a good match up? I'd like to hear why you are drawn to this match up for the Browns Defense. Must win for Cleveland I think.
Ravens offense is pretty dysfunctional rn. Every DST the last 4 weeks (incl CLE 2 weeks ago) has hit double digits in FF scoring. Browns DST been decent of late - not a bad option 5 of the last 6 (NE game didn’t go as much planned.)

Biggest reason, though, is I’m a ####### & spaced on picking up the LAC for free after waivers ran. I was stuck with choosing between ATL, CLE, DET, NYJ, et al. Browns we’re by far the best thing laying in the trash can. Nobody did me a favor and dropped a DST so here we are. Go Browns.

Lamar tossing a ton of INTs lately, and the Ravens giving up a lot of sacks as well (inherent when you have a running QB like Lamar).

Miami ran the same blitz 35 times. Credit to Brett Kolman, who has a pretty good YT video with a similar title. Been off kilter ever since.

Still starting Green Bay with Fields expected to start this week? I want to think Fields is an upgrade to Dalton with the scrambling ability of Fields alone.

Late bye has Packers well positioned for run at NFC's No. 1 seed

Excerpts:

A pair of second-team All-Pro defensive players from last season might be back, too. There’s optimism outside linebacker Za'Darius Smith and cornerback Jaire Alexander will play again this season as well. Smith played 18 snaps in Week 1 and then was shut down to have back surgery. Alexander hasn’t played since he sustained a shoulder injury in Week 4.

A defense, finally?

Remember when Rodgers said after the 2019 season opener, “We’ve got a defense?”

He might finally be right.

After defensive disappointments the past two seasons, the Packers rank fifth in fewest points allowed and seventh in fewest yards allowed under first-year coordinator Joe Barry.

That’s not to say there aren’t problem areas -- the red zone among them, where they rank 31st by allowing touchdowns on 71.9% of opponent drives inside the 20. But this appears to be the most complete defense the Packers have had under LaFleur.

“I'll take that,” Barry said. “Now, obviously, I want to improve in all areas, but the most important thing at the end of the day is limiting our opponent from putting points on the board, so that's been good.”

NBC Sports Edge:

Packers coach Matt LaFleur said CB Jaire Alexander (shoulder, IR) will return to practice Wednesday.

This means the Packers will designate Alexander to return from injured reserve, opening a 21-day window for him to be officially activated. Alexander is now on track to return within the next week or two. Coming off his first Pro Bowl season, Alexander defender four passes and notched one interception before suffering the injury in Week 4. Throwing out some early-season struggles, the Green Bay defense has been highly formidable this year. Adding Alexander back into the mix will only fuel that upward trend.

I don't doubt that, but he is better than Dalton at this point in his career. Dalton you can at least count on 2 INT and drives stalling.

Anyone expecting a repeat of last week was not being realistic. I think Dalton has thrown more than one INT twice since the beginning of last season. I just don't think the Bears are going to hang with the Packers early, and will be forced to throw a ton, opening up opportunities for sacks and turnovers.

Cowboys Can Be ‘Top-5 NFL Defense,’ Says DeMarcus Lawrence

Randy Gregory, Neville Gallimore Closer To Return

5 Bucks: It's Pollard Time, D-Law's Impact & More

Excerpt:

D-Law makes a difference

The Cowboys' defense has played well this season, but the unit could emerge as a dominant squad with No.90 rejoining the lineup. The Pro Bowl pass rusher gives the defense a dynamic weapon on the edges and his presence enables others to see more one-on-one matchups in the trenches.

Although Lawrence's stat-line was not impressive (two tackles) against the Saints, it is not a coincidence that the Cowboys generated four turnovers in his return. The veteran's energy and persistence sparked a unit that kept the pressure on Taysom Hill in the pocket. The strong showing from the Pro Bowler and the rest of the defense gave the football world a glimpse of the unit's potential with the return of a key playmaker.

NBC Sports Edge:

Cowboys designated DE Randy Gregory (calf) for return from injured reserve.

Gregory hasn't played since Week 9 with a calf injury, but Mike McCarthy expressed optimism that he could be activated for Week 14 against Washington. Gregory will provide a boost to a Cowboys defense that has already played great football this season. The Cowboys now have a 21-day window to add Gregory to their active roster.

Steelers CB Joe Haden (foot) is inactive for Week 14 against the Vikings.

Haden's continued absence is a boost for a Vikings offense adjusting to life after Adam Thielen (high-ankle sprain). The Steelers' coverage has been extremely shaky without Haden, making tonight a(nother) green-light spot for Justin Jefferson. Joining Haden on the sideline will be QB Dwayne Haskins, RB Anthony McFarland, Robert Spillane, C B.J. Finney, DT Carlos Davis and DT Isaiah Buggs.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Steelers DE Alex Highsmith avoided a serious knee injury in Week 14 against the Vikings.

Highsmith, per Rapoport, suffered a "bad contusion" above his knee -- an injury that ended his night against Minnesota. It looked to be a major injury that stopped the game for several minutes. The team's third-round pick in the 2020 draft, Highsmith could miss some time but will likely be back before season's end.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports T.J. Watt avoided a serious groin injury in Week 14 against the Vikings.

Rapoport described Watt's latest groin injury as a "tweak." It doesn't mean Watt won't miss the Steelers' Week 15 tilt against the Titans. Pittsburgh can use all the help they can get from their defensive staples, including Watt. They've been hands down the league's worst rush defense for the past month, shredded by the Vikings Thursday night for 247 yards on the ground.

Holding MIA for the playoffs but need a streamer for this week.

Not much out there. SF, CLE, ATL, HOU.

Any suggestions? I'm thinking the Texans at home v SEA. Seattle's season is done and Russ is playing bad. HOU D playing OK lately, they took TEN apart.

Didn't Russell have his best game since returning from surgery vs SF? Plus all WRs are playing including the rookie Eskridge who had a TD. And the Texans just cut a starting linebacker due to bad attitude. I think CLE is a better start, although Lamar can be explosive.

CLE out of that group, Browns are coming off a bye and are healthier. They are against the Ravens. Ravens have been susceptible to giving away takeaways lately. I saw some breakdown where the blitz from the cornerbacks are the cheat code to beating Lamar, plus he has been throwing a lot of ints lately.

Arizona was available on my WW and I see they play at Detroit Week 15.

Someone please make a case against starting them in the first round of the playoffs besides their defense being inconsistent this season and JJ Watt being on IR.

You didn't knock on wood after typing that, did you
This is a pathetic showing. Of literally all the defenses to choose from, this one was just screaming as a slam dunk, but there are no slam dunks apparently gosh darnit

Will DAL continue to smash it?

Seems like once again under the radar and one of the highest scoring defenses getting little respect going to rival WAS. One last chance to pick them back up after being dropped cuz of Taysom Hill.

Have ARI, going after GB, and even DAL > ARI?
Hope you rolled with them. They came back big again... Stud D, not sure why people down on them and thinking Saints game was a fluke big game cause Hill gifted them interceptions and TDs late.

Dallas is the type of D that allows yardage and points but make so many plays it's insane

And since every defense basically allows points, wish I held onto them, and the chiefs for that matter

Agreed, I don't think I am worrying about matchups for the rest of the season.  Cowboys every week.

Rolled with the Browns & ended up with the 4th best DST score (18.25), no complaints

Probably won’t use them in the playoffs but no reason to throw them back to the wire & give someone a decent option

Week 15

MIA v NYJ - seems too good to be true. Fins are playing well, Zach is not, at home, Davis + Carter, et al, on the shelf. No need to overthink it, right?

CLE v LV - another good D (of late) at home  but riskier than MIA.

NE @ IND - bad matchup on paper but does anyone want to face the Pats D rn?

Looking ahead to wk 15, who do you like the best among these 3 defenses....

Option 1: Browns Def vs Raiders

Option 2: Eagles Def vs Washington

Option 3: Bengals Def vs Denver

First 2 are a coin flip IMO. Both at home and should do well.

I don’t think the Bengals are in the conversation. Still getting good pressure but the team is choking rn, I wouldn’t trust them after the last 2 weeks.

With Lamar likely out, what about the Packers at BAL?  The game last night was probably an aberration with 3 long TD plays.  And isn't Jaire possibly back?

I’d consider it a positive development if Lamar could play. Offense has been dysfunctional since the MIA game, yesterday was more of the same first 3 possessions (10 plays run, 3 punts) when he was hurt. At least Huntley got them moving - though gotta do a better job taking care of the ball.

Good but not great option IMO. Quite a few tasty matchups for the first round if the playoffs. Of course must are rostered.

Honestly, I keep saying this, but division matchups cannot be treated the same as non-division matchups. The bears got to pull out every trick in the book when they play GB and still it wasn't enough...

Against a team without the storied history and same quality O as the bears, I'd assume packers will feast. I'm keeping packers and rolling with them rest of way unless I find a better option that week. But comfortable rolling with them.

I didn't realize who Huntley was.  He did a great Lamar imitation on this equally entertaining call by Kevin Harlan.

One mistake we’ve seen often this year - it’s not hard & fast, but a good general rule that has manifested often in 2021 - don’t expect a bad Defense to score well just bc of a matchup with one of the Top 5 from above.

Falcons 29, Panthers 21: Top 5 Observations

Excerpt:

1. The defense came to play. The Falcons forced three turnovers out of the Panthers today. Two interceptions came from two second-year players, linebacker Mykal Walker and cornerback A.J. Terrell. With Walker's pick six in the second quarter, it ensured that all four defensive rookies from the 2020 draft class have picks this season. Jaylinn Hawkins recorded a pick in Weeks 5 & 7, Marlon Davidson scored on a pick six in Week 13, and Walker and Terrell had picks today.

Grady Jarrett also recovered a fumble from Panthers quarterback Cam Newton that ended in a Falcons touchdown on the ensuing drive. Playmaking is important, but generating turnovers into points is the key. The Falcons scored 14 points off turnovers today, a massive reason why they came out of this game victorious.
