2025 Team Defense & Defense by Committee Thread (5 Viewers)

Washington placed DT Jonathan Allen on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Football Team also placed LB David Mayo, DE William Bradley-King, and TE Temarrick Hemingway on the list. Washington now has nine players on the COVID list including five defensive linemen and a pair of linebackers. Allen has 7.5 sacks and nine TFLs this year. Both marks lead the Football Team. Still in the playoff hunt, things are looking bleak for their chances of stopping the Eagles this week.

Raheem Morris Describes the Current State of the Rams Defense, How They Look to Proceed Moving Forward (December 2)

The Los Angeles Rams defense has seen regression this season following last year's stout performance in which it finished the year as the top unit in the NFL.

While comparing the 2020 defense to this year's squad does require adequate context based upon the group not consisting of the same personnel, they have unequivocally trended in the wrong direction.

They lost two defensive starters in free agency last offseason, then traded starting inside linebacker Kenny Young in-season as a result of cap restraints, making it three key players they now sit without. It's also worth noting that defensive coordinator Brandon Staley left to become the Los Angeles Chargers head coach, prompting a change in coordinators, hiring Raheem Morris for the role.

Counteracting the team's departures, they did, however, bring abroad pass rusher Von Miller into the fold. But factoring in each layer of the defense – the thought of remaining the top unit with all those changing pieces was a rather tall order to ask that seemed nearly unattainable.

In other words, the Rams defense just needs to be satisfactory at the very least. They played fundamentally sound for portions of the first two months of the season – but similar to the offense – things have gone south in the last three contests.

Opposing teams that have defeated the Rams in recent weeks have attacked them in a similar fashion – using the approach of establishing the run while implementing throws across the middle and taking calculated deep shots – specifically away from Jalen Ramsey.

The offense hasn't helped them though, either. Matthew Stafford has thrown five interceptions in the last three games, forcing the team to play from behind early in the first quarter until the end of regulation.

On Thursday, defensive coordinator Raheem Morris spoke about the team as a whole, touching on the defensive play over the three-game losing streak and recent turnover spree from the offense and how it trickles down to impact the game in more ways than one.

"That's the first step. Not giving them the ball," Morris said. "And that puts people behind the eight ball so they have to take more chances and that allows you to rush the passer better, that allows the ball to come out quicker."

Morris spoke at great length Thursday, stating that when you're constantly playing from behind, not only are you in catch-up mode, but the opportunities become vastly limited.

"You usually get turnovers when you got leads, you usually get turnovers when you're playing even ball across the board, you usually get turnovers when all things are equal and you just make a better play," Morris said. "We gotta go out and find a way to get the ball that way. We gotta find a way to get the ball from runners when they're fighting for extra yards. Turnovers come in bunches and when those things come, you're rolling. And when they don't, you go through these type of lolls or these type of issues we're having falling from behind and giving the ball up. You gotta win that turnover battle. That's a team thing. I think Sean said to you guys many times, complementary ball we talk about. All those things come into play."

Throughout the course of the season, Morris has reiterated that his defense needs to go out, set the tone and dictate terms. That has not occurred throughout the month of November where they went 0-3. Instead, the opposition has been in favor of dictating terms and the scoreboard has been an accurate representation as a result of it.

"You gotta go out and be able to dictate terms and when you dictate terms you get games you can rush the passer," Morris said. "You get more opportunities, you get more opportunities for the ball, more opportunities to rush."

The Rams' star defensive line has the making of the best pass rush in football. But when they play from behind and opposing teams turn to the running game, gaining yards on the ground and eating clock, it limits what Aaron Donald, Leanord Floyd and Von Miller do best – get after the quarterback.

It's a collective effort that the defense builds off of the offense and vise versa. The Rams will look to get back to their early-season ways in which they played with many leads, which in turn will elevate both units to their fullest.
NBC Sports Edge:

Rams placed CB Jalen Ramsey on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Ramsey and Tyler Higbee, who was placed on the list at the same time, will both miss the team's Week 14 matchup with the Cardinals. Ramsey was going to be spending much of his Monday evening blanketing DeAndre Hopkins in coverage. The Rams will now have to draw up a different scheme for containing him and the rest of the Cardinals' passing attack on incredibly short notice.

Im torn...

Miami at Jets: Bad Jets offense with injuries. Rookie QB and he has been stinking.

Dallas at Giants: maybe a little worse of a matchup than the Jets, but Ride the hot hand or too good to be true the last few weeks. Playmakers everywhere for the Cowboys and they are finally getting healthy again.

The Raiders D has to be considered for week 15.  They face a Browns team on Saturday, and COVID is running wild in Cleveland.  By kickoff, CLE may be starting local townspeople.

Have the Pats. Matchup is not great though. I do think they'll put in a solid week but not spectacular.

Looking at the Eagles vs the Skins who may or may not have Heinicke back. Plus all their Oline injuries and McLaurin out.

Chiefs placed DT Chris Jones on the reserve/COVID list.

Jones' inevitable absence on Thursday is a significant one since he's been a cog in the middle of Kansas City's trenches, registering seven sacks, 14 quarterback hits, and five pass breakups on the year. He most recently recorded a half-sack in the Chiefs’ 48-9 beatdown of the Raiders.

i have a bye, look at me!!, putting a bid on tampa.  i stashed philly last week.  streaming has been good to me this year...hopefully, that continues.

I've been on the Dallas DEF hype train for weeks now.  I have them in 2/4 leagues, and 3 of that 4 Ive clinched, the 4th?  Lost cause.........  :wall:

Anyhow, Dallas has NYG this week, and @ home next vs the Washington "Redskinamateurs"..............  I figure they are a good play weeks 15 and 16, and then I will start thinking about finals week, the week before I get there, IF* I get there.

"Out of it" owners are starting NOT to pay attention, and there are playable defenses on pretty much every wire in most leagues now.

Just for completeness , the 3rd league I've clinched (where I DO NOT ) have Dallas,  I have AZ and Denver.  AZ is facing DET this week (I'm on bye so it doesn't matter) but I will likely drop something for another defense the next week or so.

 TZM

Quick bump - I'm looking at SEATTLE for weeks 16-17.

They are @ home vs CHI and DET those weeks.    Only 49% rostered on Yahoo.

I'm assuming they are so widely available since they are facing the Rams this week.    Get ahead of your opponents and snag SEATTLE if possible.   You may or may not choose to roll them out depending on your other choices, but being @ home vs. those opponents is definitely something I'm trying to acquire if I don't have other options.

Honesty you csnt to wrong here and think Dallas has the higher ceiling but lower floor

Agree with all that tua should be able to put up points and dolphins d will get Good field position for their offense. Michael carter is coming back but their wr room looks absolutely bad.

The run game for Miami is pretty beat up eight now so hope they can actually exploit the Jets in that mannr

Another thing I look for is dropbacks and poor coached teams who forget balance and I think the Jets put their qbs in position to take sacks and throw picks. 6 pts on the road vs jets last game, but Flacco carter corey Davis elijah moore  were healthy, not anymore

Sitting with GB and TB.  Miami a FA and cleared waivers.  Do I drop GB for them?  I guess the only risk is my opponent picking them up for this week.  Because my plan is to drop GB after this week likely anyway (if I make it through this week).  Miami vs. NYJ better than GB vs. Balt (with or without Lamar)

I think GB is a great play but I think MIA is a better play.

Was looking at Philly as an option, but the disparity between home and away games is pretty astounding.  With exception of the last game vs NO where they scored 11 points in my league, the other 4 games have a combined 2 points (1,0,1,0).

I think GB is a great play but I think MIA is a better play.
That is what I opted for...maximizing my possible play for this week...picked up Miami and dropped GB.  After this week will roll with TB if I make it through.  Longshot in that league anyway at the moment.

ESPN's Jeremy Folwer reports that the Giants are considering giving Jake Fromm snaps in Week 15 against the Cowboys.

Mike Glennon has been dreadful while filling in for Daniel Jones (neck), so the Giants are understandably open to the idea of a new signal caller. Fromm was only signed heading into Week 13, so he's probably still getting up to speed on the playbook and developing chemistry with his teammates. The Giants will be facing a Cowboys pass defense on Sunday that is playing extremely well. Whether it's Glennon or Fromm under center, the Giants are going to have trouble moving the ball through the air.

Washington added WR Cam Sims, QB Kyle Allen, LB Milo Eifler, S Darrick Forrest, DT Matt Ioannidis, T Cornelius Lucas and TE Sammis Reyes to the Covid list on Wednesday.

Washington is in the midst of a major Covid cluster, and now has 30 combined players on the injured reserve and Covid lists. They will be extremely shorthanded against an Eagles team that may also be without Jalen Hurts. More positive tests could be on the way. Gardner Minshew could get his second straight start against a team of backups.

Chargers defense, Bosa on a roll entering Chiefs showdown

Excerpt:

Joey Bosa has been considered one of the NFL’s best pass rushers since entering the league in 2016. The Los Angeles Chargers linebacker has added another element to his game, making him an even bigger headache for quarterbacks.

Bosa leads the league with five strip-sacks entering Thursday night’s pivotal matchup against AFC West rival Kansas City. It is the most forced fumbles by a Chargers defender against a quarterback since Marcellus Wiley also had five in 2001.

“Every time I get an opportunity, I’m going for the ball,” Bosa said. “I think that’s how you really change the game; sacks are good, but being able to get those turnovers and get it in the hands of (QB) Justin (Herbert) is way more helpful in getting those wins. In the past, I would have probably just gone for a big hit, but now, I’d rather reach out and take the ball because it’s a lot simpler, and you get the forced fumble.”

Bosa is tied for seventh in the AFC with 8 1/2 sacks and has a sack in five of the past six games. The only game he didn’t get one was Dec. 5 at Cincinnati when he played only one quarter due to being evaluated for a concussion. Bosa was cleared to return, but coach Brandon Staley erred on the side of caution.

The recent flurry of sacks is Bosa’s best run since he had a streak of six straight games in 2017.

While Bosa has been consistent all season, the Chargers’ defense has put together two straight solid games for the first time all year. They have forced seven three-and-outs, six takeaways, and 15 passes defensed in victories over the Bengals and New York Giants.

Los Angeles also comes in with a little bit of momentum against the Chiefs. In the Sept. 26 game, it forced four turnovers, including a late fourth-quarter interception that led to the go-ahead touchdown in a 30-24 victory at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chargers (8-5) are one game behind the Chiefs in the division, but a win on Thursday night would give them the tiebreaker and vault them into the AFC West lead.

“I think that we had a good plan going into the last time we played them, and we executed it pretty well. I think we need to do the same,” Bosa said. “Obviously, the point of emphasis is (Patrick) Mahomes and keeping him inside of the pocket so that he can’t hurt you with his feet. It’s always been a challenge playing those guys. Thursday night, after a quick turnaround and, obviously, primetime, it’s going to be pretty tough. Luckily, this game, I think a lot of us came out feeling pretty good.”

Besides being on track for the fourth double-digit sack season in his six-year career, Bosa could become one of the youngest players in NFL history to reach 60 sacks if he gets four in the final four games.

Bosa has 1 1/2 career sacks against Mahomes, with one coming in this season’s first game. Houston, the Chargers opponent on Dec. 26, has allowed 37 sacks this season, tied for fifth most.

Bosa also has sacks against Denver’s Teddy Bridgewater and Drew Lock, while the Jan. 9 regular-season finale comes against Derek Carr and Las Vegas. Carr is Bosa’s most-sacked QB with seven.

“I think he’s great. His production and sack total speak for themselves,” Kansas City offensive tackle Orlando Brown said.

Chargers CB Asante Samuel (concussion) is inactive for Week 15 against the Chiefs.

Samuel will miss his fourth straight game despite drawing a questionable tag and seeming to have a shot at returning. It's a boost to Patrick Mahomes, but the Chargers' pass defense has held up well during Samuel's now month-long absence. With 10 more days to get right, he should return for Week 16 @HOU. Joining Samuel on the sideline are S Alohi Gilman, QB Easton Stick, RB Larry Rountree and DL Breiden Fehoko.

Rams placed OLB Von Miller on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Miller was one of nine Rams to land on the COVID list Thursday evening, bringing the team's total to a staggering 25. Under the NFL's new protocol, many of them could still be cleared in time for Sunday's game against the Seahawks, but this is a dire situation, one where "next man up" might not suffice. Joining Miller on Thursday were OT Tremayne Anchrum Jr., DB Antoine Brooks Jr., OG Bobby Evans, DB Jake Gervase, LB Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, DB Kareem Orr, LB Troy Reeder and LB Christian Rozeboom.

Congratulations to everyone who can start the Cowboys Defense this week:

NJ.com's Zack Rosenblatt said it "seems inevitable" Mike Glennon will be benched for Jake Fromm in the coming weeks.

The Giants' humiliating 2021 campaign could end with Fromm -- who wasn't on an NFL roster last month -- under center, playing out the string in another lost season. Rosenblatt said the Giants sticking with Glennon makes many Big Blue fans "angry." Just wait until they get a look at Fromm. Glennon has been typically terrible in his two starts, completing half his passes for two touchdowns and two picks. We wouldn't be surprised if he's benched this week against the Cowboys' fearsome defense so Fromm can be thrown to the proverbial wolves. Dallas' defense is accordingly a premiere fantasy option in Week 15. Daniel Jones could miss the remainder of the season with a neck injury.

How are folks feeling about Las Vegas DST? I picked up Cleveland earlier in the week thinking it was a good play but now they are wasted. Rams there as well but they are getting picked off. Vegas a good play with everyone out?

Who you guys like between CLE, LV, Rams, DEN and Minny?

Congratulations to everyone who can start the Cowboys Defense this week:
I had KC and Rams going into the week, scrambled and managed to hold onto the Rams. Before news broke, made deals to grab 49ers and Cowboys. Cowboys in my lineup, need all the help I can get

6 sacks and a turnover surely helped, no?
Yeah...commented too early as the D came up big in the 2nd half.  I was burned worse by other things on the day...I should have complained more about Tee Higgins...maybe he would have done something after the first few drives.

Dolphins did OK

Second half Jets were racking up DST points every possession

(we have a different kind of scoring system)

  1. 3 n out + sack (0.5 + 1.0)
  2. 3 n out + sack (0.5 + 1.0)
  3. sack + fumble (1.0 + 2.0)
  4. 3 n out + sack (0.5 + 1.0)
  5. 3 n out (0.5)
  6. 4th down stop (1.0)
14.75 points on the day, 9.0 after halftime
