Mike Patterson is a 1st round DLineman entering his 3rd year.

Dontae Stallworth is a 1st round Wide Receiver entering his 6th year.

Salaries are not a consideration. The Eagles have a lot of money tied up in Patterson and would have to commit a good amount to Stallworth. Think Stallworth 5 yrs $30 mill. Anything more than that and the money alters the true question.

Very surprising so far. Philly's D got run over all year. I guess some still think Patterson will be an upper echelon D Tackle but I'm not one of those.

your thread title doesn't really match your thread intention.

on general terms, I'd take the 23 YO dl.

I'm guessing PP thinks Stallworth is the correct answer. I'm not knowledgeable enough about how good Patterson is, but I'll say this about the Eagles passing game: someone is really, really good. The Eagles were the best passing team in the league in terms of adjusted yards per attempt. That's even with McNabb missing six games. (Although I can't use the A.J. Feeley argument, since Stallworth didn't play in that game).

I'm not sure why it is confusing. The title is in general terms but then the Poll defines the choices. In general terms most GM's would take a Pro Bowl young DLineman vs. a Pro Bowl Wide Receiver. Neither of these guys are Pro Bowlers. From watching EVERY Eagles game last year, I feel that Stallworth is the better and more valuable player.

I also watched every game, and they did fine without Stallworth.Reggie Brown. Hank Baskett. Jason Avant. LJ Smith. Westbrook. And yes, even Greg Lewis and Schobel. The offense finds the open man. Stallworth did well when healthy, but others also did well when he was down. The Eagles win because of their trenchwork. D-Line and LB are problems. They've proven that they can live with 2nd-rate WRs.If Patterson can be worth that high pick, Patterson is the correct answer.

my biggest concern with giving Stallworth all that money is that he's missed 12 games over his 5-year career and probably played injured in many others.

I think DTs generally take awhile to develop so we probably haven't seen Patterson's best yet just 2 years into his career. Stallworth is 5 years into his career at this point and he's probably not going to get any better than he was this year. His 19.1 yards per catch was great, but he only averaged 3 catches per game and I'm guessing most defenses were focused on McNabb/Westbrook.

Eagles don't seem to value the WR position too highly and have traditionally been able to plug guys into the lineup and still be successful. In contrast, they have put a ton of emphasis on building their offensive and defensive lines, so it makes sense that they would spend a lot more money there than at LB and WR.

I take it this poll isn't working out quite like you thought it would.

Anyway, I saw flashes from Patterson last year that makes me think he can be very good. He got killed by the injuries to others on that line and the horrible play by others (Howard, Walker and Bunkley). He was basically the only d-lineman worth a damn last year....

Patterson is a hell of a defender, he was a big part in that philly defense that held LT to his worst total in years, thats why they gave him a huge extension.

From the Saints/Eagles playoff game. Patterson was horrible. 0 Tackles and 2 Assists from a starting DT in a game where the opponent ran for 208 yds. I know you can't make a personnel decision based on one game but he sure did come up small in a big situation. If I were the Eagles, I'm not sure I would feel great about the big extension they gave him in light of that. Is he just a role player or a future impact player?

PP, the poll should REALLY be Trent Cole AND Patterson or Stallworth...

Even with a straight up Patterson vs Stallworth, I would much rather have a young, promising D tackle.

Looks like more people agree with you but I question the promising part. I dont think Patterson is very good at all. The middle of the Eagles line got GASHED all year. They were the worst run defense in the league next to the Colts (yes I know how that turned out for the Colts).I dont disagree with the position bias. If you asked me who I would rather have, Vince Wilfork or Stallworth, its Wilfork. Or Ngata over Stallworth. Or Darnell Dockett over Stallworth.
