24 hours of LEMONS--Starting Over (1 Viewer)

Update-We've been working on the car weekly since the beginning of March. We've added radios so the driver can communicate with the pits, a home built cool-suit set up, fuel gauge, rebuilt the shifter linkage, changed fluids, and a few other things that needed attending. The car/tools/spares are packed and next week we are headed to Millville NJ (NJMP Thunderbolt course) for our first race of the year.

Friday the 9th is practice. The race is Saturday (10-6) and Sunday (9-3:30).

If anyone wants to see what crapcan racing is all about. This is the place to be.

brohans my driveway is like the place where class c comes from which makes me pretty bummed out take that to the crappy day for swc bank brochachos

Race Update

Friday was practice at NJMP on the 2.25 mile course (Thunderbolt). Our car "Cheatee" ran great. It was fun learning a new course and finding your limits ("Can I take turn 6 flat", How late can I brake at the end of the straight and still make turn 1") Thanks to moderate traffic during practice we were able to get down to a 1:49 lap! We sailed through tech and BS inspection. Our upgraded theme/costumes seemed to be a hit with everyone including the judges, and we were placed in group “A” with zero penalty laps!

On Saturday, One Hundred Sixty cars started the race. Our first 2 stints went well and we were in the top half of the standings. Everything was going great with the third stint, until we started losing power. Thankfully our driver came in immediately. Cheatee had overheated due to a missing fan belt. The heat was so intense that it had melted the spark plug boots. Thankfully we decided to pull the head to take a look inside. The cylinders and pistons looked fine. We determined that our cylinder head was warped due to the heat. So now we pulled the head off our “untested”, “sitting in the woods for years” donor motor. After many hours of work we got the “new” head on, and Cheatee roared back to life Saturday night around 11. Looks like we’re running on Sunday.

Since I hadn’t driven Saturday, I got the first stint Sunday morning. We still didn’t know what the motors lower end looked like and were optimistic that Cheatee would last. Amazingly we all got to drive 2 stints Sunday and we turned a 1:53 race lap. On the last stint of the day, and with one lap left, we started to losing power. Rather than grenade the motor, we decided to pull in. All weekend we had zero contact with other cars/walls, and only 2 black flags (passing under yellow, and an off track excursion). Our radios and cool suit worked great! Even missing 5 hours of racing we were able to finish 100th out of the 160 starters.

We're all exhausted from the hectic weekend and drive home. But none of us can stop smiling!

ETA-We got some very good video. I'll post a link when it's posted on youtube.

Will post link to pics and vids when they are up.

The "off track excursion" was executed by me. I was at the end of my stint, and going to be coming in for a driver change at the end of that lap. I had just passed 2 slower cars and had clear track in front of me... I decided to slow down as I'd be pitting in in 4 more turns. In turn 9, I relaxed, lost concentration, and did a few "tank" slappers. Ended up collecting it on the grass and drove back onto the track before the passed cars were even close. I drove straight to the judges and was basically told I was a #######. They let me go without a penalty.

The passing under yellow was by a team mate that didn't see a yellow flag.

We were hitting 115mph at the end of the straight. It was crazy trying to see how late you dared to brake before going into turn 1.

Good stuff.

My buddies were there. They were the crew with the car that looked like a giant Elmer's glue stick.

They did buy a new car though that they're trying to get ready for later this year. Some type of Pontiac I think.

Definitely a fun event.

Saw them on the track. Hard to tell what that tube was while on the track. All you see is the back or front of a hollow tube. How'd they end up doing?

I can't believe this, but it just happened... Got a call from the BMW sales guy that sent me to Lake Placid to go bobsledding with the US Olympic team. This time I'm getting to drive the new m4 http://www.caranddriver.com/bmw/m4 at NHMS with professional instruction from BMW pros. Eventually I'll get to go solo too!

Very psyched and am looking forward to comparing my lap times with what I turned with my 1986 120ish h.p. lemons car.

Woo Hoo

Having our third race this weekend at NHMS. Very little done to the car since our May race at NJMP. We have been working on rebuilding a spare engine for the car. Hopefully we will get to install refreshed motor at our leisure this winter. Currently have a crazy Nor' Easter hitting us. Tail of the storm is forecast to pass through Friday. Team is torn on whether to practice Friday in the rain and risk bending the car...

We just wrapped up our third race, and had our best finish ever! Huge smiles could be seen on all of the team and our supporters after the checkered flag dropped. Out of 132 cars that raced, we finished 29th.

On Friday we practiced on the 1.6 mile road course (NHMS). The weather couldn’t decide what it wanted to do. So we all had an opportunity to get in some dry and wet laps. The wet laps were very exciting. Cheatee’s torque had us all being much gentler with the right peddle in the wet. We had no off track excursions all day, and Cheatee ran great. Once again, tech and BS inspections went smoothly. The spinning pinwheels on Cheatees wings made our theme that much more of a spectacle. Everyone loved the look including the BS judges and we were placed in class “A” with zero penalty laps.

Saturday started with Mark at the wheel. As luck would have it, the green flag waved slightly after he’d passed the S/F line, soooo after lap one we were in the 112th position. As the day progressed we continued to climb in the standings. We’d gain 10 or so spots on a drivers stint, and then lose 3-4 places when we were stopped for refueling and driver changes. We had no black flags until my second stint. Being a bit to anxious to get by a car that’d been holding me up. I skidded off track in a left hand downhill turn. Fortunately there was a lot of run off no damage was done other than having to face the judges. Unfortunately we’d been in 31st position when I tried to break the laws of physics. My excursion off track, and another black flag for leaving the penalty box to quickly, dropped us to about 42nd place. Due to smooth driving by my teammates, we climbed back up to 37th by days end. Saturday saw improved personal lap times, and we had a new team fast lap of 1:29.3 (1:30.3 last year). Saturday evening was spent enjoying some cocktails, and Mark entertaining us all with the video of my off road excursion!

Andrew drove first on Sunday. Mark was to drive the second stint, but wasn’t able due to a few to many cocktails the night before. The “illness” Mark was stricken with will be forever known as “Pulling a Robertson”. As Mark recovered. Andrew, Bob, and myself maintained the driving duties. We’d climb to the low 30’s and then fall back a few spots during the driver changes. Andrew came in with backfiring issues at the end of his second stint. Luckily the problem was easily found and repaired. Part of the intake system had come loose. We found the bolt under some plug wires. Tightened things back up, and the problem was fixed. By 1:45pm some of Marks color had returned, and he climbed into the car for a heroic drive. He was able to run an extended stint which allowed us one less driver change. I jumped in for the last stint and we finished the day in 29th place!

Video links will follow once they are uploaded.

3 year update...

Our original team exploded after our last race.  Three of us agreed that parting ways with least participatory/most difficult team mate was best for the team.  After our intentions were made known, one of the three of us had a change of heart.  Car went to the guy we had wanted out, but he had the deepest pockets. The driver that stayed true to our original agreement decided he'd had enough Lemons and bought a fish tank.  The turncoat, and $ guy still try and race the car.  Unfortunately for them, they've blown 3 motors and have finished less than 25% of the laps.

I started fresh and decided to own the car myself to avoid anything like this from happening again.  The old crew is with me and has been a huge help with the new build.  The new guys are all great and have also been a tremendous help getting the car built.  People have drifted in and out, but at this point we have a strong core.  A year and a half of building and we are finally scheduled to get back on track this October.

The car theme is the Bat Mobile. Picked the theme because my daughter thought "It'd be cool to say that she learned to drive a stick in the Bat Mobile".  We have a contoured Bat Wing, Bat Fins, Bat Jet exhaust, etc.  Lots of pics and description of the build on facebook .

  Wish us well!

The car is mostly ready.  But when is any "racecar" fully ready.  I'm exhausted.  The past 3 weeks getting Beulah ready to dance has been exhausting.  Tomorrow we are headed to the track.  Friday is practice 9-5.  Inspections happen from noon to 5.  I have a pretty good group, and many have agreed to theme up (batman, robin, bain, joker, cat woman). I took the car out today to get it inspected, so that I can drive the car to and from events and my friends house who happens to have a lift.  WOW sums up my experience.  The car is street legal if it only had a catalytic convertor.  But I was greeted with less than open arms at both places that I'd heard were "modification friendly".  Both places refused to even inspect Beulah. Exhaust needs to come from the back... WRONG.  NH state law allows side exhaust behind front doors. The car sits too low,  WRONG. The car is low but I couldn't find a single statute stating that was a reason for fail.  Not sure was happening, but the DMV's gotta be hammering these garages. I'm pissed to the point of ripping out the current exhaust and adding cheapo exhaust and pressing the issue.  JHC the car is safer and better built than 99.5% of the cars on the road.  Arrgh.

Things are frantic here, and a couple key players are unable to attend the race.  Plus I've got a 60 plus yo autocrosser who's never raced with other cars, yet thinks we have a good shot at beating the other 149+ and coming home with gold.  Keep reachin for the stars.

Recent pics and Blah Blah is on our facebook page (Squidrope Racing).  We're also planning on updates during the race for those who need to know NOW.

Practice on Friday went well as I was able to cut 2 seconds off my previous cars best lap time, and I think with more time getting used to how this one drives I should be able to knock 2-3 more seconds off.  The car is very fast!  One of the other drivers hit a tire wall while trying to avoid another car.  Damage was mostly cosmetic.  The other driver drove clean all day.  We breezed through the safety inspection and the BS inspection judges loved our car and Batmobile theme.  Class A no penalty laps which is what we hoped for and expected.

Race day wasn't quite as good as practice had been.  I started the race in about 30-35 position out of 115 cars.  After 9 laps I had worked my way up to 18th when I heard a loud klink and the motor blew.  We think that either a valve or valve spring broke.  A huge hole was punched through the top of piston #1 that looks pretty spectacular.  We found a replacement engine that was an hour away and had to be removed from the car.  When the engine arrived at the track it was about 7pm.  Unfortunately it was a Frankenmotor with parts off of at least 3 different types of motors.  It wouldn't work with our cars electrical system.  I remembered someone else who might have an engine that'd work.  I called him and he not only let us have the motor, he drove it an hour and a half to get it to us.

The engine came loose while removing it from his truck and crashed to the ground.  Fortunately no damage was done.  We spent the night stripping parts off the donor and replacing them with parts from our motor.  By 5am the engine was in the car but we still needed to hook up coolant system, exhaust, electricals, and fuel lines.  Around 8 we tried to start her up.  She'd run and rev for 3 seconds and stall.  We had people from a bunch of other teams trying to help us figure out what was going on.  Finally at 1pm I pulled the plug and we packed everything up.

Lemons racing isn't just about winning the race.  It's about the experience.  They have awards for the winners, but they also have rewards (ex-Heroic Fix, IOE) that many think are better than winning the race.  I never set out for the latter awards as it usually meant that something had gone terribly wrong and a herculean effort was needed to fix the problem.  We were rewarded for all of our hard work with the "I Got Screwed" award.

I'm disappointed in the car breaking but extremely proud of how the team never gave up.  We have the winter to get things ready for our next race in May in NJ.  Wish us luck!

We finally have the 2 engines ready for assembly this weekend.  A lot more work than I'd have anticipated but hoping it'll be worth the effort.  Our first race will be in August at Thompson CT.  Stop by and say hi as I'll be missing the "family" at FBG.  Keep up with Squidrope Racing on FB.

We had much better luck at Thompson and finished 30th out of 120 cars.  Top 25%  Our next race was in October at NHMS.  We had some hiccups but finished 21st out of 115 cars (17th in our class).  Top 18%  We just finished our last race at Pittsburgh International Race Complex.  Once again we finished higher than the previous race. 11th out of 82 cars.  Top 13%.  We've been working hard to keep the car reliable, and have been having a great time racing and working on the car.  Next race is in August at Thompson.  Hopefully we continue to finish better than our previous race.  A top ten finish would be fantastic.

This is really cool. Can't believe I never noticed this thread before.  Do you do the 24 Hour of Lemons at Barber in Birmingham?  I saw an ad for that while touring their museum and thought it sounded like a blast.

I have a friend who races in the Lemons in California. He is always working on his car. Loves the races.

Good luck!

We've only raced NHMS (NH), Thompson (CT), NJMP (NJ), and PIRC (PA).  Our last race at Pitt was the farthest we've travelled.  11 hours (each way) towing the car  isn't much fun, plus you add 2 more days to the weekend.  So instead of it being a Friday, Saturday, Sunday weekend.  It's a 5 day deal.

We have a great time but it is a lot of work.

I didn't even know there was a road core at Thompson. I just checked it out on Google Maps. Looks like a fun track. Is there any elevation change like NHMS?

Thompson is pretty flat.  IMO the only interesting elevation change would be the last turn.  The turn ends at the crest of a small hill, and if you have lots of HP or take the turn wrong the rear end steps out.  The L/R turns coming off the oval are fun.  Other than that it's not a very interesting track, just a bunch of drag strips connected by hairpins. Not my favorite track but it's close and travelling gets expensive.

We spent about $6,000 to race at Pitt.  If we race at the tracks closer it's about $3,500.  Travelling to Pitt also required us to take 2 additional days off for travel (Thursday and Monday).

I'm still at the Lemons thing.  Covid slowed us down a bit and we only raced once in 2020.  But we finished 4th out of over 100 cars!  The next race at NJMP in the spring of 2021 we repeated with another 4th place.  We had 2 other races in  2021 and finished 12th in both due to mechanical and driver issues.  Our first race is in 2 weeks at NJMP.  Woo hoo

Finished 10th out of 136 at NJMP.  Had one mechanical issue that cost us 16 minutes and a couple black flags that set us back a bit more.  But hey  10th out of 136 aint to bad!  I think that we're starting to get the hang of this.

On a side note-I think that someone on here had a friend that was affiliated to team gluesticks.  We were camped next door to them this race.  Great bunch of guys!

This looks so much fun. I've seen ChrisFix and Rich Rebuilds building cars for this. I heard a $500 car ends up costing like $20,000 to get started up.

Rich rebuilds was a joke.  He showed up with one of the worst prepped cars that I've ever seen. He also juiced up his 20k cost things quite a bit IMO.

ChrisFix definitely had a cheaty car, but I kinda felt like it was ok as last year he got a huge punch in the ego/nuts by finishing only a handful of laps. He still finished somewhere around 42nd this year.

B is for Builds also had a car entered and placed in the 60thish place area.  Which is pretty good for their first race.

In all fairness we have a "cheaty" car.  Definitely not the Cheatiest car as we were the 22nd fastest car 8 seconds off the fastest cars best lap. It costs us about $5k for a race.  That includes food, race entry, garage rental, camping, fuel, wear items (tires/brakes),etc.   I've been told that a $500 Lemons car can be built for $7k.  We spent a bit more on ours, but ours mostly runs all weekend.

Just got back from a race at Thompson Speedway in CT. 99 cars entered. We finished 3rd, and had the lead for about 10 laps on Saturday. We would've finished P2 if we hadn't stepped on our wiener during the pitstops.
ETA-None of the youtubers were there racing. But ChrisFix had one or 2 people taking video.
