2nd Year Dynasty (1 Viewer)

Looking for the public opinion on an issue my 2nd year, 12 team, 20 roster spot (cut down in sept. from 23) dynasty is having. Start 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 PK and 1 DEF.

It's an extremely active league, with regular chat and lots of trading.

We have 2 divisions, top 3 teams from each make the playoffs, with division opponents playing twice a year. One division is a bit stronger than the other, having 2 of the top teams in the league. We had a poll on who wanted to change the schedule, 9 out of 12 voted to change.

A few ideas were thrown around on if we would leave divisions as is, and just mix it up...not having division opp. play each other twice, etc. But we voted to randomize the divisions each year. The commish randomized the divisions, THEN put up the poll to make sure that is what everyone wanted to do...make it official. The randomization was very one sided...when the poll went up, no one voted for the change.

Now we're stuck with the same schedule as last year, with the commish liking his schedule being in the weaker division.

We had waiver issues last year, and went with blind bidding without any fanfare...because the commish wanted it this way.

Do most dynasties switch up the schedule, or leave it the same year in, year out? Anyone else experience a problem like this, and if so, how did you fix it? I just can't see playing the same teams for the next 10 years.

Some do, some don't

A few of my leagues reshuffles the divisions based on what place they finish (putting the 1,2 and 3 place teams in different divisions and the rest accordingly). You'll have to convince the others to vote to change it

And Blind Bidding is a good thing IMO.

Just to add a few thing here since I am also in this league it's a MFL league and we are told you can't change the schedule each year without changing division so we would miss playing the same three teams in the other division every year. Can any other MFL league commissioners tell me if that's true.

not totally sure but I know there is a button that will shuffle the schedule and the weeks that you play each team. Not sure if unbalanced non-division games leave you still playing the same team. That would be weird to never play another team unless its the playoffs.

You might want to look at creating your own schedules instead of having MFL doing it for you. That's what I do.We have 4 divisions of 3 teams each, play each division opponent twice, and the rest of league once (13 total games). We don't reshuffle divisions. When I do the scheduling I schedule one division game during bye weeks and one division game after bye weeks are over. It might be a bit time consuming to do the full schedule on your own but in the end it gives you complete control over the league.

Whatever ends up being the decision, the league needs to vote and approve a schedule template, how often the division shuffle will take place and how the divisions will be determined and stick to that going forward.

Our dynasty...we change divisions every 3 years based on a random die rolling website. We use a schedule template from the FBG website to put the teams into the slot.

We used 3 years to shuffle to keep some division rivalries in there and used a schedule template which put the division games at the start and end of the schedule to avoid any bye weeks affecting the division match-ups.

ETA: Shuffling the divisions and schedule simply because it may appear that the top two teams from last year are in one division is not a very good reason to shuffle.

Persoanlly, I would keep it as is. I am not a big "divisional" fan, but it does foster rivalries. I am in a 12 team (heavy FBG local league) and we were very one-sided, for the first few years. As time went on, guys dropped out and now they are pretty even. Things change...you can certainly change things up, but that tends to happen naturally anways. Also, what I found was that the weaker division tended to win the whole thing (I think they are up 4-2), so you never knnow how it will play out in the end.

In the 3 Fantasy Legends Leagues, FLL1 still uses the top 3 from each division, which is two division winners, plus the top two from each division, for a total of 6 playoff teams in a 12 team, 2 division league. Fantasy Legends 2 and 3 uses the format of two div winners, plus the top 4 remaining teams regardless of division. Below I describe how we assign divisions each year and the schedule format.

Each year the odd drafting team (orginal order) goes in one division and the even drafting team (original order) goes in the other.

We play a 13 game regular season schedule. Each team plays teams within their division twice. Games played outside the division is based upon the standings of the previous year. Weaker teams get an easier 3 game schedule, better teams get a harder 3 game schedule.

1) First place teams play teams 1, 2, and 4 from the other division.

2) Second place teams play teams 1, 3, and 5

3) Third place teams play teams 2, 3, and 6

4) Fourth place teams play teams 1, 4, and 5

5) Fifth place teams play teams 2, 4, and 6

6) Sixth place teams play teams 3, 5, and 6

I wrote a computer program that spits out my schedule each year. Not hard to do manually by grid, but saves me a total of a couple hours work for all leagues.

First, I think that the way the (possible) change happened was handled poorly. You either vote for randomization, and let the chips fall where they may, or you don't.

I think you have a few options. Maybe do a divisional realignment every two or three years. Take the total wins of the previous couple years, and rank teams 1-12 (or total points, which might be a better barometer), and place the odd teams in one division (The teams ranked 1-3-5-7-9-11) and even on the other. Something like that should minimize the times one division is that much weaker than the other.

Right now, it's what, every team plays their divisional opponent twice, and then 3 other random teams? How are those opponents decided?

Another thing to consider is using MFL's double header feature. Pick a few weeks (no byes) where everyone plays two games. That way everyone plays everyone.

I think my advice would be dependent on your league. I play in a league with 3 divisions, and all four teams in my division are run by strong owners, and we would all have an easier time in other divisions. But we like the rivalry in our division, and realignment wouldn't be considered. It does make for a tougher road to hoe, but we would lose some of the year-to-year trash talk by changing divisions.

If you are going for most fair, then divisional realignment every couple of years is a good option. If it is more about having fun, I like staying in the same division.

Can I make another suggestion to alleviate the "one division is stronger" thus making it necessary to shuffle divisions every year?

Simply modify your playoff format. In a dynasty league I'm in (2 divs) - the division winners are granted a first round bye. The other 4 teams are wildcard teams based on overall record - and are thus seeded 3-6. (Note: you could easily have there be two wildcard teams and the two teams that came in second in their respective divisions). Wildrcard weekend happens week 14. Week 15, the winner of 3 vs. 6 plays the division winner with the best overall record, the winner of 4 vs. 5 the other.

The addition of wildcard teams makes things alot more interesting (typically many of the teams still have a shot going into week 12 - it is a very competetive lead) and makes it unnecesary to adjust for strong/weak divisions.

Having "set" divisions in a dynasty league is also nice from the whole "I don't want to trade this guy to someone I play twice a year" aspect as well.

In the Zealots leagues that I'm in we have 12 team leagues and we have 2 confernces and 4 divisions. 3 teams in each division, top team makes it in each division and then the team with the best record after the division winners gets the wild card. Every 3 years we shuffle the teams around to try and make the conferences and divisions more equal so that way one conference or division doesn't dominate. The teams are shuffled every 3 years going by teams overal record for those 3 years.

I am in this league as well and it does need to change. There was a poll up before hand to make the change and it was removed as a poll and it would have been pasted and then the div were randomized and then selfish/shady stuff happened. It has gotta change people are complaining non stop i am not a fan of rotating div but anything is better then this.

The thing is this commish wont allow three divisions either

Now I know this is Fantasy Football, but the NFL doesn't change divisions every year. If you have the two best teams in your division, suck it up and get better. I believe in Fantasy leagues, divisions should remain the same and have wild card spots into the playoffs to offset the tough divisions. For example, our last playoff spots are two to the div champs, three to the next best three records, and last spot to the team left with highest point totals. So, if you are a good team that gets beat in a great divisions, your points should get you in playoffs!

Only a few guys want to rotate the div. I am not one of them and i agree with you 100% if you wanna win get better and suck it up. It can be done in dynasty and especially with this league guys value draft picks really high. The schedule can be changed manually and i suggested that and it got shot down...

We miss playing one team every year but our commish makes sure it is a different team each year. I believe he has to do this manually but we don't realign the divisions.

Thanks for all your thoughts.

Few things I noticed:

I have no problem with blind bidding, it's just how it was changed...I'm not the only one in the league that was surprised when I found out our waiver process had been changed.

I totally agree with...bjlmonster Posted Jun 14 2010, 05:22 PM

The division has 2 top teams, but it also has one team that has all but given up on this year...and is not competing to win. So as long as all team continue to get better, everyone should compete. My problem is that we play divisional opponents twice a year, and 3 from the other division. If we keep the same schedule, after year 2, there will be 3 teams we haven't played. As I said in the original post, this league is very active and I don't see any reason why we shouldn't be able to play all teams at least once a year.

But this post might be the purpose for me posting this thread in the first place...massraider Posted Jun 14 2010, 03:57 PM

This is the biggest issue IMO. The "change" wasn't handled correctly...and now because so much crap has gone on, everyone wants to leave the schedule as is to avoid conflict...and to have to deal with the commish. It has to be obvious to all that we need some change in our schedule, but no one wants to deal with it.

We have a 12 team dynasty and the 3 worst teams from the season before redraft divisions, after our rookie draft. We also do double headers, so you play non-division 2 times and disions 3 times. This has worked well for the last 5-6 years. This year, however, the 2nd worse team had all the picks and made a bunch of trades and is now the top team in the league. We will see if there is some push back now.

If what you are saying is true, you are getting bullied by your commish. Or, allowing yourselves to be pushed around.
