31 for 31 halloween movies (1 Viewer)

Normally made-for-TV horror is garbage but these were actually very good and surprisingly scary. All were filmed in the 70s.Salem's Lot - David Soul is kind bland but the rest of the cast, especially James Mason, is top-notch.Dark Night of the Scarecrow - finally released on DVD. Very creepy.
There's something really creepy about those old 70s TV movies. I've seen Salem's Lot but will have to find the other ones.
I've already recommended Salem's Lot in this thread and was glad to be reminded of Dark Night of the Scarecrow. I remember watching that on CBS when I was like 12 years old and loving it.

The Changeling - late '70s early '80s show with George C. Scott (not the Angelina Jolie movie from a couple of years ago). Somewhat of a predictable / tired story line, but done very well. Creeped me out pretty good when I was younger.

Trick 'R Treat

Anaconda

Island of Dr. Moreau (1977)

The Mist

The Shining

Fallen

Maximum Overdrive

Saw

From Dusk Till Dawn

Lost Boys

Devil's Rejects

Tremors

Gremlins

The Ring

28 Weeks Later

Evil Dead 2

Pandorum

and another vote for Session 9.

How twisted is Audition?
Good write up i read which lead me to watch it... explains it well IMO."Okay, I'm going to make kind of an anti-recommendation here, okay? If you're just looking through this list because you're looking for something kind of scary for a date, or for a party, don't -- don't pick this one, all right? Physically brutal, psychologically off-kilter, this movie is fairly brilliant -- but don't see it unless you're sure you really want to."
In all seriousness, I haven't dated a japanese girl since I watched this movie. True story.Easily the best horror film I've ever seen.

When was that released?

I saw Trick r Treat listed here; great suggestion.

For another recently released I'd suggest House of the Devil (2009).

I can't believe the 70's version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers hasn't been mentioned yet. F'ing classic.

Also not mentioned but not for everyone: Don't Look Now

good call shuke. :X
X2Also a late 70's satan flick. The Sentinal. I really enjoyed all the creepy neighbors who were really dead, and ex murderers.

Bubba didn't do it! Love that flick.

Just released for the first time on DVD this week.

Trick 'R Treat
When was that released?
Filmed in 2007, released last Halloween on dvd. Campy and pretty corny, but twisted and a lot of fun.
Wasn't there another campy horror film with the same title starring Skippy from Family Ties?
There was a mid-80's release with the same name. Not sure on Skippy's involvement but it did have Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osborne, including Ozzy as a Reverend preaching about the evils of heavy metal.

Burnt Offerings.Awesome gothic horror.
I saw the preview for this at some kiddie movie I went to when I was around 8. I woke up screaming that night because of the scene showing the spectral hearse driver shoving a coffin at the camera with an insane grin. That was so creepy I remember it vividly 30+ years later.

A couple of things come to mind when seeing that again.1. What kind of a wuss was I? I think my 7-year-old daugther would laugh at that if I told her it was one of the scariest memories of my childhood.

2. Bette Davis is actually pretty creepy.

My favorite horror movie is Carrie starring Sissy Spacek--love those '70s flicks and this one is really creepy.

Others I liked: the Shining, The Exorcist, The Orphinage

Some people consider Jaws a horror movie; that may be pushing it but it's a great movie.

Funny that someone mentioned The Entity. I don't remember it being a great movie but if you find Barbara Hershey even remotely attractive you'll want to check it out.
