A small number of intelligence officials under former President Trump were aware of several suspected Chinese balloons that crossed into U.S. airspace during his time in office, according to The Wall Street Journal. Despite suspicions among some officials that the high-flying objects were from China, a Pentagon assessment never conclusively linked the balloons to Beijing, and information on the incidents was not shared broadly within the Trump administration, the Journal noted.

Several former Trump officials have said they were unaware of the balloons’ incursions on U.S. airspace and expressed frustration about the lack of notification.

The Biden administration briefed former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former National Intelligence Director John Ratcliffe and former national security adviser Robert O’Brien on Wednesday about China’s high-altitude surveillance program and the previous incidents, according to NBC News. Former national security adviser John Bolton was also briefed separately.

Maybe this was covered above, but for those of you who pay attention to Peter Zeihan he had an interesting explanation. He claims a Xi didn't know about until it was shot down and the U.S. intelligence community had the President not shoot it down until it had gone over the United States so they could spy on IT and China in reverse. Zeihan claims it was great for the U.S. as we got a ton of information on everything from equipment and technology level to codes from it.

I don't know who that guy is, but unless he's working directly with our agencies, it's all speculation and wish-casting IMO. The public is never going to know any of that for certain.

He does work with agencies.
at what level?
What level does he need to be consulting with? It makes total sense; you fly a spy plane above it and monitor all its transmissions, let it fly through your territory because you know where it is going to be and move or cover anything it might find of interest, and then shoot it down and collect all the electronics right before it leaves your territory. Judge for yourself.
