Yeah I know a defense thread. This was a very uncharacteristic outing letting the Seahawk's roll all over them. Saints coming up on Monday night too. Anyone have thoughts on what has been a stellar unit in the past and why they were so lack luster yesterday?

I'm sticking with them. Division games are always close, I'll give them a pass this past week and against NO next week too.

They haven't really been a stellar unit. Last year they were #15 in terms of yardage against. They did a good job causing turnovers (#5 in the league), which is why they were #4 in terms of points against. They recovered 15 fumbles, best in the league. In 2008, they were #28 in the league in creating turnovers, recovering only 6 fumbles. That's why the 2008 defense, which actually gave up less yardage than in 2009, finished #23 in points against.

SF's defense isn't really good. They have a couple of good players, but the success of the defense as a unit will be largely predicated on how many turnovers they can create.

Seattle only had about 250 yards total (passing + rushing). Considering how bad SF's offense was, I'm thinking of giving them a couple more weeks.

14 of Seattle's points came from Alex Smith's two interceptions. One was returned for a TD, the other returned to the 13 yard line and next play was a TD.San Fran was trouncing Seattle at the start of the game, and got within the 10 yard line on each of their first three drives, but only came away with a total of 6 points. If they convert those into more points, I think this would have been a very different game.
